Numbers 16:7 – You are taking to much

4 Tammuz 5783 – 23 June 2023

“…you are taking too much for yourselves, you sons of Levi!”

This was Moses’ accusation against Korach and his co-conspirators.

However, the Talmud (Sotah 13b) says that these words later came back to haunt Moses. When he was praying to be allowed to enter the Land of Israel, Hashem denied his request using the same expression, “you are asking for too much” (Deuteronomy 3:26).

Rav Chaim Shmuelevitz explained that even though Korach and his men were off-base in their demands, Moses should not have told them that they have reached the limit of their spiritual capacity. It would have been more appropriate to redirect their spiritual ambitions rather then putting them down.
