LEVITICUS 19:5 – THE WILL TO OFFER

“When you slaughter an offering to Hashem, you shall slaughter it to find favor for yourselves.” (Leviticus 19:5)

How can we bring an offering to Hashem now, when there is no Holy Temple? The Karliner Rebbe explained that the literal meaning of the Hebrew in the last phrase of this verse is ‘you shall slaughter your will (desires)’.

Rav Meilech Biderman teaches that any time we close our eyes from seeing something improper, close our mouth from saying something improper, or hold back from doing something improper – THAT is a sacrifice that we are offering to Hashem, because we are sacrificing our own will!
