The soul is inherently Divine and stands above the limitations of time and space. In contrast, the physical body is subject to the constraints of time and place. This is the unique perfection the Torah notes regarding our Matriarch Sarah—that the light of her soul shone with such great intensity that it was evident even in her physical body.
Generally, when a person is required to confront an environment that opposes their faith and values, there are three possibilities for dealing with this situation. The person lives within and is involved in the environment, and may even tend to be influenced by it, but having made a firm decision to withstand the trial, they overcome its influences. The second option, the person separates themselves from the environment, and consequently, it has no influence on them. The drawback of both these methods is that the environment fundamentally remains a threat to the person.
Influence is the third possibility. The person radiates such a powerful determination that they have a shaping influence on their surroundings. Consequently, there is no possibility or fear of being negatively influenced by the environment. This is the highest perfection, when the surroundings pose no threat to a person’s values and path because he is the one influencing and shaping the environment that surrounds him.
This was the perfection and righteousness of Sarah—her soul shone so brightly in her body that her physical body became a vessel for the revelation of the soul’s light. Abraham and Sarah, exemplify the ultimate perfection achievable through moral action in the physical world. Their mission was to introduce the knowledge of One G-d and His unity into a pagan world. The physical body sometimes tends to conceal the light of the soul due to the materialism of this physical world. However, this is precisely the task: to bring holiness down into the physical world and refine it. How is this accomplished? Through studying the Torah of the Seven Noahide Commandments, giving charity, prayer, and performing acts of kindness. These actions cause refinement within the material body and the world as a whole. Sarah achieved this completely, and her accomplishment continues to impart strength to the generations that follow her.
Shaping the environment directly aligns with the seven Noahide commandments. By actively implementing them, Noahides transforms their surroundings from a threat into a dwelling place for G-d. In essence, the universal moral path required of B’nei Noach is sufficient to allow the individual’s soul to achieve its highest potential and be constantly enlightened. The soul is divine in its essence and stands above the changes of time and place. The physical body is subject to the limitations of time and place. The Seven Noahide Commandments cause the body to rise above its nature and cling to the eternity and infinity of the soul. This will come to a peak in the complete and true redemption.
