A few explanations of the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><br>We\u2019re coming very close to the last days of Passover \u2014 Pesach \u2014 which is part of the broader holiday of liberation. Pesach itself is about liberation from slavery in Egypt, and the last days of Pesach commemorate the splitting of the Red Sea, when the Jewish people passed through and the Egyptians drowned. That too is a form of liberation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, the question is very simple: if the first days of Pesach already represent liberation, then what do the last days add? Why do we need another commemoration of liberation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019d like to explain this in a few different ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Way number one:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You could say that the Jewish people only truly understood they were free from Egypt when they went through the sea. Why? Because after the sea opened for them, and then closed on the Egyptians, drowning them \u2014 that was the moment it became clear: \u201cWe\u2019re really free now.\u201d Egypt no longer had power over them. That\u2019s explanation number one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Way number two:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Liberation is an ongoing process. It\u2019s not that you get freed once and that\u2019s it \u2014 you\u2019re done, you\u2019re free, you\u2019ve made it. No, not at all. When you leave your first \u201cEgypt\u201d \u2014 meaning the first level in which you were stuck, limited, or trapped \u2014 yes, it\u2019s liberating. But then you enter a new level. And at first, that level is expansive. You feel free. But after a while, that new level becomes your new Egypt \u2014 your new limitation. And you need to break free from that too. It\u2019s a continuous process of growth. A person can never say, \u201cI\u2019ve finished.\u201d When is it finished? When your life is over. That\u2019s when your work in this world is done \u2014 either because of age, or because you\u2019ve fulfilled your mission, or for reasons only G-d knows. But until that moment, you\u2019re still alive \u2014 and that means there is more to grow, more to liberate within yourself<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Then There&#8217;s a third, deeper explanation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Das hebr\u00e4ische Wort <em>Pessach<\/em> \u2014 Passover \u2014 can be seen as a combination of two words: <em>Peh Sach<\/em> \u2014 meaning \u201cthe mouth that speaks.\u201d <em>Peh<\/em> means mouth, and <em>Sach<\/em> means speaking. So the first level of liberation during Pesach has to do with what we say. It\u2019s about freeing the mouth \u2014 freeing ourselves from negative speech, from gossip, insults, and harmful words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then come the final days of Pesach, where we remember the splitting of the sea. In Psalms and other texts, it says that God opened something called the <em>Nahar<\/em> \u2014 a river. Nobody knows exactly where this river is physically, but that doesn\u2019t really matter. In the mysticism of Judaism, the <em>Nahar<\/em> represents something internal. It\u2019s about that which is hidden becoming revealed. Our speech \u2014 what we say \u2014 is external and can be heard. But our thoughts \u2014 what\u2019s inside \u2014 are hidden. And those inner thoughts also need work. We need to become aware of our thoughts, to discern which are appropriate and which are not. That\u2019s the deeper level of liberation: inner liberation, mental and spiritual clarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, the first days of Pesach are about liberating the mouth \u2014 what we say. The last days are about liberating the mind \u2014 what we think. It\u2019s not a repetition, but a deepening. A second stage.
