Here, we share some key ideas and practical lessons on how we can use our speech in daily life to build rather than break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><a id=\"_msocom_2\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Civilizations don\u2019t collapse overnight.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><br>They collapse slowly, then suddenly. One moment, people are prospering \u2014 building, creating, thriving \u2014 and the next, they\u2019re looking around in shock, wondering how it all fell apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, the real question is not <em>Warum<\/em> cultures collapse.<br>Die eigentliche Frage ist: <strong>What should individuals do when collapse is starting, and they still have a chance to stop it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, I want to explore that question through two timeless sources:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Die <strong>Torah portion of Pinchas<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And the <strong>liturgy of the 17th of Tamuz<\/strong> \u2014 a fast day that marks profound moral and cultural failures in Jewish history.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Both texts contain universal lessons for anyone who wishes to face cultural chaos <strong>not as a victim<\/strong>, but as a <strong>moral actor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Collapse at Ba\u2019al Peor<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the Torah portion <em>Balak<\/em>, Israel suffers a moral collapse.<br>The people are seduced by Moabite women and drawn into the worship of <strong>Ba\u2019al Peor<\/strong> \u2014 a religion that mixes idolatry with public degradation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cAnd Israel joined itself to Baal Peor, and the anger of the Lord was kindled\u2026\u201d<\/em> (Numbers 25:3)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A leader of the tribe of Shimon \u2014 Zimri \u2014 publicly flaunts this new norm. He brings a Midianite woman, Cozbi, into the camp <em>in full view<\/em> of Moses and the entire assembly.<br>No one knows what to do. Outrage is met with paralysis. A deadly plague breaks out. Twenty-four thousand people die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then \u2014 <strong>one man steps forward<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His name is <strong>Pinchas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He takes a spear and drives it through Zimri and Cozbi \u2014 a decisive, even shocking act. And the plague stops. God then says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cBehold, I give him My covenant of peace.\u201d<\/em> (Numbers 25:12)<br><em>\u201cIt shall be for him and his descendants a covenant of eternal priesthood.\u201d<\/em> (25:13)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why does such violent action result in a <strong>covenant of peace<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because this was not about vengeance.<br>It was about <strong>intervening at the brink of collapse<\/strong> \u2014 acting when everyone else was silent. It was an act of <strong>moral clarity<\/strong> in a moment of cultural disintegration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Shattering of the Tablets<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This wasn\u2019t the first time a leader had to make a painful choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the <strong>17th of Tamuz<\/strong>, Moses descended Mount Sinai with the tablets \u2014 the <em>Luchot<\/em> \u2014 carved and inscribed by God Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And he saw the Golden Calf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He saw the debauchery, the betrayal of sacred order. And what did he do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cAnd he threw the tablets from his hands, and broke them at the foot of the mountain.\u201d<\/em> (Exodus 32:19)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Would you have shattered those divine tablets?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet the <strong>final verse of the entire Torah<\/strong> praises this act:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201c\u2026for all the mighty hand, and for all the great terror that Moses performed in the eyes of all Israel.\u201d<\/em> (Deuteronomy 34:12)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the sages say: <em>That verse refers to the breaking of the tablets.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because sometimes, <strong>breaking something precious<\/strong> is what preserves what\u2019s <em>even more sacred<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If Moses had handed those holy tablets to a people immersed in idolatry, the covenant would have been spiritually destroyed \u2014 not just symbolically, but in essence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Moral Collapse: Then and Now<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Why do civilizations fall?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because <strong>immorality becomes normal<\/strong>.<br>When public sin becomes public policy, when sacred boundaries are erased, when truth becomes negotiable \u2014 <strong>collapse begins<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t ancient history.<br>It happens in every generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And in every generation, the question is the same:<br><strong>Will anyone act?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moses and Pinchas didn\u2019t act out of rage or ego. They weren\u2019t chasing power.<br>They acted because the spiritual structure of their world was cracking \u2014 and no one else was stepping up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What they did is what philosopher <strong>Philip Rieff<\/strong> calls <em>\u201cdefense of sacred order.\u201d<\/em><br>What <strong>Stephen Hicks<\/strong> calls <em>\u201cmoral clarity over cynicism.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yes \u2014 you should look those names up. It\u2019s good for your mind and your moral imagination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>But What About Us?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Man k\u00f6nnte fragen: <em>\u201cI&#8217;m not part of Israel&#8217;s priesthood. What does this have to do with me?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Die Antwort: <strong>Everything.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Die <strong>Die sieben Gesetze Noahs<\/strong> are not tribal. They are <strong>universal ethics<\/strong> \u2014 the moral infrastructure of civilization itself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No murder<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No theft<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No idolatry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No blasphemy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No cruelty to animals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No adultery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Justice through courts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When these break down, society cannot stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Die <strong>17th of Tamuz<\/strong> marks the breaching of Jerusalem\u2019s walls \u2014 a violation of justice and borders.<br>And here&#8217;s a key insight from the Talmud (<em>Sanhedrin 59a<\/em>):<br><strong>Nations are not meant to conquer.<\/strong> They&#8217;re meant to build, to steward, to lead \u2014 but not to dominate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only Israel had a divine mandate to conquer specific land \u2014 the Land of Israel.<br>Other nations are bound to <strong>justice within their borders<\/strong>, not conquest beyond them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a quiet rebuke to empires \u2014 Babylon, Rome, even modern colonial powers \u2014 that claimed moral legitimacy for expansion.<br><strong>True leadership is rooted in moral responsibility, not domination.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Universal Temple<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So why did Pinchas receive the covenant of eternal priesthood?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because his act preserved the <strong>spiritual integrity<\/strong> of a future that centered around the <strong>Temple in Jerusalem<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that Temple was never meant to be only for Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cMy house shall be a house of prayer for all nations.\u201d<\/em> (Jesaja 56:7)<br><em>\u201cAll nations will ascend to Jerusalem to serve Hashem\u2026\u201d<\/em> (Zechariah 14:16)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t fantasy.<br>It\u2019s a universal vision of <strong>moral unity<\/strong> through sacred order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this three-week period between the 17th of Tamuz and <strong>Tisha B\u2019Av<\/strong>, we reflect on the loss of that Temple \u2014 and what it symbolizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even today, synagogues serve as <em>mikdash me\u2019at<\/em> \u2014 miniature sanctuaries.<br>Not replacements, but reminders of what must one day return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re a Noahide, or someone seeking spiritual depth, visit a synagogue if you can.<br>Not just to witness tradition, but to <strong>anchor yourself<\/strong> in a space dedicated to prayer, learning, and moral refinement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When Collapse Starts \u2014 Act<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When cultures collapse, we all have two options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Watch and mourn.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oder <strong>act and repair<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Pinchas acted.<br>Moses acted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Will we?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me leave you with this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When sacred order is breaking, doing nothing is also a choice.<br>Standing for truth will cost you something.<br><strong>But not standing for truth will cost you everything.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t fanaticism.<br>This is <strong>moral responsibility<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When your <em>Pinchas moment<\/em> comes \u2014 when you see the world unraveling before your eyes \u2014 don\u2019t hesitate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Act.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>And may we all be blessed with the clarity and courage to know what to do \u2014 and when.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Von Rabbiner Tani Burton<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sukkatshalom-bneinoach.com\/de\/category\/rabbi-burton\/\">Weitere Schiurim von Rabbi Tani Burton <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u00a9 Copyright, alle Rechte vorbehalten.
