Some thoughts about Parshat Shofetim

“You shall be wholehearted with the L-rd your G-d.” (Deuteronomy 18:13)

Immediately before this verse, the Torah prohibits a series of practices intended to uncover or manipulate the future: divination, sorcery, omens, consulting the dead, and other forms of occultism. Then, in contrast to all of these, Moses gives a remarkably simple instruction: “You shall be wholehearted with the L-rd your G-d.”

Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch explains that tamim, “wholehearted,” means complete and undivided. A person who is tamim does not cut off any portion of life from G-d. Our plans, fears, ambitions, relationships, successes, and uncertainties all belong within our relationship with Him. This follows naturally from our belief in the Oneness of G-d: if there is only one G-d, then there can be no corner of existence governed by some competing power, force, fate, or luck.

This, Rabbi Hirsch explains, is what lies behind the Torah’s rejection of divination. Human beings desperately want to know what is going to happen. Will I succeed? Will I be healthy? Will my plans work? What dangers await me? Ancient peoples sought answers through sorcerers, omens, the dead, and other supposed means of glimpsing the future. Modern forms of this anxiety may look different, but the desire to control what cannot be controlled remains very much alive.

The Torah offers a radically different way to live. Rabbi Hirsch writes that the wholehearted person lives with the thought of doing his duty and leaving the result, together with his entire future, to G-d. G-d has already revealed what He expects of us. Our task is therefore not to discover the future, but to decide how faithfully we will live in the present.

This message has particular significance as the month of Elul approaches and we prepare for Rosh Hashanah. Rosh Hashanah is a specifically Jewish festival, with commandments given to Israel, but its significance extends to all humanity. The Mishnah teaches that on Rosh Hashanah, “all the inhabitants of the world pass before Him” in judgment (Rosh Hashanah 1:2). G-d is not merely the Judge of Israel. He is the King and Judge of the entire world.

For Noahides, Elul can therefore be a meaningful opportunity for spiritual preparation. We need not ask, “What will the coming year bring me?” We can ask a much more important question: “What does G-d require of me?” Am I living faithfully according to the commandments He has given humanity? Am I dealing honestly with others? Am I respecting human life and property? Am I contributing to a just society? Are there areas of my life that I have allowed to become disconnected from my relationship with G-d?

Being wholehearted with G-d does not mean that we stop planning, striving, or attempting great things. It means recognizing where our responsibility ends. We are responsible for our choices, our effort, our integrity, and our obedience. The outcome belongs to G-d.

As a new year approaches, that realization can bring both responsibility and peace. We do not know what the coming year will contain, nor do we need to know. Our task is to enter it wholeheartedly: to do what G-d asks of us, to use faithfully what He has given us, and to entrust the future to Him.

Denken Sie nun über die folgenden Fragen nach:

What is one concrete change you can make during Elul to become more wholehearted in your service of G-d?

Why do you think the Torah contrasts attempts to discover the future with the command to be “wholehearted with G-d”?

Are there uncertainties about the coming year that occupy more of your attention than they should?

What parts of your life are easiest to entrust to G-d, and which are the hardest?

As Rosh Hashanah approaches, what areas of your conduct deserve an honest spiritual accounting?

Schabbat Schalom

Von Rabbiner Tani Burton

Weitere Schiurim von Rabbi Tani Burton

© Copyright, alle Rechte vorbehalten.
