Abraham responded and said: Behold, now, I wanted to speak to my Lord, although I am but dust and ashes (Genesis 18:27).
Rabbi Simcha Bunim of P’shischa taught: Every person should have two pockets. In one pocket should be a piece of paper saying: I am but dust and ashes. In the other pocket should be a piece of paper saying: For my sake was the world created.
When a person is feeling puffed up with pride and arrogance, they should take out the paper that reads: I am but dust and ashes. And if a person begins to feel diminished and defeated in life, they need to take out the paper that says: For my sake the world was created.
