In Parashat Ki Teitzei, the Torah teaches us an important rule: “A perfect and just weight you shall have; a perfect and just measure you shall have.” This means that we must not cheat or deceive people when we buy or sell something.
This idea is also connected to one of the Siete leyes de Noé: the obligation to establish courts and a system of justice. A good and just society must protect people from theft, fraud, and deception.
Imagine that David has a lemonade stand. His sign says: “One full cup of lemonade for €1.”
Then David thinks, If I only fill the cups halfway but still charge €1, I will have more lemonade left and make more money!
His friend says, “Great idea! Nobody will notice!”
But David stops and thinks. “That would not be honest. I promised my customers a full cup. If I give them less but take their money, I am deceiving them.”
His father explains: “Exactly. That is why we need justice and fair rules—to protect people from fraud and deception. But we should also choose to be honest even when nobody is watching.”
David asks, “But what if I can make more money by cheating?”
His father answers, “The Creator is not only present when we pray. He is with us everywhere, even at your lemonade stand. In all your ways, you can know Him. And remember: it is the Creator who gives a person the power to earn a living. You do not need to lie or cheat in order to succeed.”
So David fills every cup honestly. Each customer receives exactly what they paid for. Soon, people come back because they know that David is honest and trustworthy.
The Lesson is: A just society protects people from deception, and each of us must choose to be honest. True blessing does not come from cheating, but from the Creator.
