{"id":19669,"date":"2024-10-21T09:50:33","date_gmt":"2024-10-21T08:50:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sukkatshalom-bneinoach.com\/?p=19669"},"modified":"2025-08-17T14:40:28","modified_gmt":"2025-08-17T13:40:28","slug":"parshat-bereishit-the-two-voices-in-the-garden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sukkatshalom-bneinoach.com\/es\/parshat-bereishit-the-two-voices-in-the-garden\/","title":{"rendered":"PARSHAT BEREISHIT &#8211; THE TWO VOICES IN THE GARDEN"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bereishit\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Genesis.1.1-6.8?lang=he-en&amp;utm_source=aish.com&amp;utm_medium=sefaria_linker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Genesis 1:1-6:8<\/a>\u00a0)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><strong>\u05d1\u05e1&#8221;\u05d3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Genesis.3.1?lang=he-en&amp;utm_source=aish.com&amp;utm_medium=sefaria_linker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bereishit, 3:1<\/a>:\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cAnd the snake was more cunning than all the animals of the field that Hashem, G-d made; And he said to the woman,\u00a0<strong>even if G-d said<\/strong>, \u2018do not eat from all the trees of the garden?\u201d<br><strong>Rav Shimshon Raphael Hirsch,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Genesis.3.1?lang=he-en&amp;utm_source=aish.com&amp;utm_medium=sefaria_linker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bereishis, 3:1<\/a>, Dh: Did G-d even say:\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cAnd even if G-d did say so\u2026Is the desire that is in you not the voice of Hashem?! Why did He give you the power of desire, and the power of the inclination&#8230;Didn\u2019t the voice [inside you] come first? And isn\u2019t it more explicit?!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The first sin begins with the enigmatic words of the snake to Eve \u2013 \u201cdid G-d even say, \u2018do not eat from all the trees of the garden?\u201d The meaning of these words is very unclear \u2013 what exactly was the snake\u2019s argument to Eve? The simplest explanation is that the snake was saying, that even if Hashem said not to eat from the trees, so what? Yet this does not seem to be the most sophisticated argument on the part of the snake that would succeed in persuading Eve to go against Hashem\u2019s explicit command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabbi Shimshon Raphael Hirsch<sup>1<\/sup>\u00a0offers a unique interpretation that emphasizes a different clause in the snake\u2019s argument \u2013 \u201ceven if G-d\u00a0<strong>said\u00a0<\/strong>don\u2019t eat, so what?\u201d Rabbi Hirsch eloquently explains that the snake was making a very persuasive argument: Yes, it is true that G-d conveyed a message through speaking of how He wants you to act \u2013 He told you not to eat from the tree. However, G-d also put inside of you a desire to eat from the tree \u2013 that is also a form of G-d communicating with you, which indeed came before the actual verbal command not to eat from the tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the words of Rabbi David Forhman:<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cG-d may have\u00a0<strong>said<\/strong>\u00a0to avoid the tree, but the question is: \u2018Do you want to eat from the tree? Do you desire it? And let\u2019s say you\u00a0<strong>do<\/strong>\u00a0desire the tree. Where do you think those desires came from? Who put them inside you? Wasn\u2019t G-d the one who put them inside you? Certainly, He did\u2026He is your Maker.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The snake is pointing to a major contradiction. On the one hand, G-d&#8217;s word instructs Adam and Eve not to eat from the tree, and on the other hand, another voice of Hashem \u2013 His voice inside you; your passions and desires \u2013 beckons you indeed to eat of the tree. The snake solves this dilemma by arguing that even though G-d\u00a0<strong>said\u00a0<\/strong>not to eat, His instilling of the desire to eat it came first, and so that should be the primary voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The snake himself had a valid argument because it is indeed true that Hashem communicates to animals solely through the voice inside them, which manifests itself in their natural instincts. Hence, when a bear eats a fish because of his natural instinct, he is doing G-d\u2019s will. This is beautifully expressed in\u00a0<em>\u2018Perek Shira\u2019<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 the series of prayers of how nature praises G-d, which shows how all of nature does G-d\u2019s will. The only problem with the snake\u2019s argument is that G-d had a totally different plan for mankind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Man has natural desires but he is supposed to subjugate those desires to the word of G-d. This is not a contradiction \u2013 desires can be positive and should be harnessed but they should not define man\u2019s actions. G-d wants man to control himself to do G-d\u2019s will and he does this by not blindly following his desires. In Rabbi Hirsch\u2019s words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cMan is not like this [animals]. It is upon him to choose good and turn away from evil, from his free will and his obligation&#8230;therefore, man has spiritual strength in addition to his physicality, and it is inevitable that his physical nature will clash with good and will pull him to evil\u2026The voice of G-d does not speak\u00a0<strong>inside\u00a0<\/strong>him, rather\u00a0<strong>to him<\/strong>, and it tells him what is good and evil\u2026in order to know exactly what are good deeds and what are evil [deeds], the only way to learn is from the voice of G-d that speaks to him from outside him.\u201d<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, Eve fell victim to the snake\u2019s arguments, and as the next verses tell us, focused on her natural desires \u2013 \u201cAnd the woman saw that the fruit was good to eat, and that it was desirable to the eyes\u2026\u201d<sup>4<\/sup>\u00a0Consequently, Adam and Eve failed the very first test \u2013 a test to discern whether they would recognize that they are on a qualitatively different level from the animal kingdom in that for mankind, G-d\u2019s word from without overrides the voice within.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Man\u2019s job since this seminal failure is to rectify this mistake and recognize the word of G-d is the decisive force in determining man\u2019s behavior, whereas his natural desires should be harnessed to do G-d\u2019s will but not to contradict it. This message is highly pertinent at all times, and especially in recent generations where there is a strong emphasis on how people naturally \u2018feel\u2019 or what they are naturally pulled towards. This phenomenon is used to justify abhorrent and forbidden lifestyle choices all with the justification that the person was \u2018born that way\u2019. Apart from the dubious nature of this argument<sup>5<\/sup>, even when a person does feel a pull towards forbidden activities that does not mean they are permitted.
