For example, it is not used as a conclusion to a prayer of its own uttered. Below, we\u2019ll explore how and when &#8220;amen&#8221; is used in Judaism and the depth it adds to both blessings, prayer and daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Meaning and Use of &#8220;Amen&#8221; in the Hebrew Bible<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the first times we see the word &#8220;amen&#8221; is in<a href=\"https:\/\/mechon-mamre.org\/p\/pt\/pt0405.htm\"> Numbers 5:22<\/a> . This passage discusses the laws concerning a \u201c<em>sota\u201d,<\/em> a woman who has deviated from the path of modesty. She is brought to the Temple and must take an oath, to which she responds with &#8220;amen,&#8221; indicating her acceptance of the oath&#8217;s terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>22<\/strong> and this water that causeth the curse shall go into thy bowels, and make thy belly to swell, and thy thigh to fall away&#8217;; and the woman shall say: &#8216;Amen, Amen.&#8217;<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-right\" data-align=\"right\"><strong>\u05db\u05d1<\/strong>&nbsp; \u05d5\u05bc\u05d1\u05b8\u05d0\u05d5\u05bc \u05d4\u05b7\u05de\u05b7\u05bc\u05d9\u05b4\u05dd \u05d4\u05b7\u05de\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05e8\u05b0\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc\u05b6\u05bc\u05d4, \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05de\u05b5\u05e2\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05da\u05b0, \u05dc\u05b7\u05e6\u05b0\u05d1\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05d1\u05b6\u05bc\u05d8\u05b6\u05df, \u05d5\u05b0\u05dc\u05b7\u05e0\u05b0\u05e4\u05b4\u05bc\u05dc \u05d9\u05b8\u05e8\u05b5\u05da\u05b0; \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b4\u05e9\u05b8\u05bc\u05c1\u05d4, \u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b5\u05df \u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b5\u05df.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Numbers.5.22?lang=bi&amp;with=Rashi&amp;lang2=en\">Rashi<\/a> explains this verse as: &#8220;The word <em>amen<\/em> spoken by the woman implies acceptance of an oath spoken by someone else about them. In this context, <em>amen<\/em> can mean both &#8216;It is so&#8217; and &#8216;May it be so,&#8217; expressing agreement with both the curse and the oath. When the woman says <em>amen<\/em>, she affirms, &#8216;May the curse happen to me if I am guilty,&#8217; and also &#8216;I accept the oath as true.&#8217; This means she agrees that she hasn\u2019t been unfaithful at any time, whether during her engagement or marriage (or, if applicable, during her marriage to her deceased husband\u2019s brother).&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In<a href=\"https:\/\/mechon-mamre.org\/p\/pt\/pt0527.htm\"> Deuteronomy 27:17<\/a> we see the word &#8220;amen&#8221;, used by the people to indicate acceptance of a statement or terms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>17<\/strong> Cursed be he that removeth his neighbour&#8217;s landmark. And all the people shall say: Amen.<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-right\" data-align=\"right\"><strong>\u05d9\u05d6<\/strong>&nbsp; \u05d0\u05b8\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05e8, \u05de\u05b7\u05e1\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9\u05d2 \u05d2\u05b0\u05bc\u05d1\u05d5\u05bc\u05dc \u05e8\u05b5\u05e2\u05b5\u05d4\u05d5\u05bc; \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b7\u05e8 \u05db\u05b8\u05bc\u05dc-\u05d4\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05dd, \u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b5\u05df<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, &#8220;amen&#8221; is a form of public confirmation and agreement with a moral or legal statement. One person makes a statement, and the others respond with &#8220;amen,&#8221; affirming its truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Further Biblical Examples of &#8220;Amen&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ezra\u2019s Blessing (<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mechon-mamre.org\/p\/pt\/pt35b08.htm\"><strong>Nehemiah 8:6<\/strong><\/a><strong>)<\/strong>:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>6<\/strong> And Ezra blessed the L-RD, the great G-d. Amen, and Amen.<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-right\" data-align=\"right\"><strong>\u05d9\u05d3<\/strong>&nbsp; \u05d1\u05b8\u05bc\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05da\u05b0 \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4, \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d9\u05b4\u05e9\u05b0\u05c2\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc&#8211;\u05de\u05b5\u05d4\u05b8\u05e2\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc\u05b8\u05dd, \u05d5\u05b0\u05e2\u05b7\u05d3 \u05d4\u05b8\u05e2\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc\u05b8\u05dd:&nbsp; &nbsp; \u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b5\u05df \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b5\u05df.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Commentators note that here, &#8220;amen&#8221; signifies a wish for the blessing to be eternal. This instance also marks the end of the first book of Psalms, underscoring eternal praise for G-d.<sup data-fn=\"ca6a6f84-f6c8-42c5-8ded-28c4b29e6766\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"ca6a6f84-f6c8-42c5-8ded-28c4b29e6766-link\" href=\"#ca6a6f84-f6c8-42c5-8ded-28c4b29e6766\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Summary of the Meanings of &#8220;Amen&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From these examples, we see that &#8220;amen&#8221; can convey multiple meanings in Judaism:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Agreement<\/strong> with what has been said.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hope<\/strong> that a blessing or wish will come to pass.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Affirmation of truth<\/strong>, declaring that the words spoken are indeed true.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In context:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When taking an oath, &#8220;amen&#8221; is a form of agreement with the terms of the oath.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When receiving a blessing or prayer, &#8220;amen&#8221; expresses the hope that the blessing or prayer will be fulfilled.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Guidelines for Saying &#8220;Amen&#8221; in Blessings or Prayer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a Jew is obligated to recite a blessing, for instance before eating, but is unable to do so for any reason, another Jewish person who shares the obligation may say the blessing on their behalf. In this case, the Jew must hear the complete and unaltered blessing in order to fulfill their obligation by responding with &#8220;amen.&#8221;<sup data-fn=\"5c5ca7e0-cbf2-45da-9247-dfde2c563d9b\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"5c5ca7e0-cbf2-45da-9247-dfde2c563d9b-link\" href=\"#5c5ca7e0-cbf2-45da-9247-dfde2c563d9b\">2<\/a><\/sup> However, if they are merely affirming someone else&#8217;s blessing without a obligation of their own (because they are not eating), it is sufficient to know when the blessing has concluded and then say &#8220;amen.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Jew may also say &#8220;amen&#8221; upon hearing the blessing or prayer of a non-Jew, provided they are certain that the non-Jew is not an idolater.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Non-Jews are not obligated to say blessings, so their &#8220;amen&#8221; may be said also if they have not heard every word of the blessing, as long as they are certain the speaker has finished reciting it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When reciting a Bible text or a Psalm, we do not say &#8220;amen&#8221; after it. However, one can explain in advance why, with a specific Bible text or Psalm recited, one may say &#8220;amen&#8221; in certain contexts. Additionally, it is important to note that one does not say &#8220;amen&#8221; after their own blessing, as stated in Shulchan Aruch OC 215:1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Talmud advises that &#8220;amen&#8221; should be said thoughtfully. Its length should match the time it takes to say &#8220;El Melech Ne\u2019eman&#8221; (G-d, the Faithful King), a phrase that embodies the meaning of &#8220;amen.&#8221; Rushing or extending &#8220;amen&#8221; too long is discouraged; instead, one should focus on saying it with intent and mindfulness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fascinating Insights About &#8220;Amen&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jewish sages explain that saying &#8220;amen&#8221; adds power to the blessing spoken by another person, thereby contributing to its fulfillment. The word &#8220;amen&#8221; (\u05d0\u05de\u05df) shares its Hebrew root with <em>emunah<\/em> (\u05d0\u05de\u05d5\u05e0\u05d4), meaning &#8220;faith.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Judaism, &#8220;amen&#8221; is not just an affirmation; it is a powerful word that expresses faith, agreement, and the hope for divine truth.
