Chief among them is <strong>Rosh Hashan\u00e1<\/strong> \u2013 the day of judgment for all creation. But Rosh Hashanah is not an isolated event in the fall. Its message echoes throughout the year, reminding us to reflect \u2014 during the spring, on our birthday, and even every single day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Rosh Hashanah \u2013 A Day of Judgment and of Creation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Torah says in <a href=\"https:\/\/mechon-mamre.org\/p\/pt\/pt0323.htm?v=fd3c46aff9\">Leviticus 23:24<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>24<\/strong>&nbsp;Speak unto the children of Israel, saying: In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall be a solemn rest unto you, a memorial proclaimed with the blast of horns, a holy convocation.<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-right\" data-align=\"right\"><strong>\u05db\u05d3<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;\u05d3\u05b7\u05bc\u05d1\u05b5\u05bc\u05e8 \u05d0\u05b6\u05dc-\u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d9\u05b4\u05e9\u05b0\u05c2\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc, \u05dc\u05b5\u05d0\u05de\u05b9\u05e8:&nbsp; \u05d1\u05b7\u05bc\u05d7\u05b9\u05d3\u05b6\u05e9\u05c1 \u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05b0\u05bc\u05c1\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05e2\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05d0\u05b6\u05d7\u05b8\u05d3 \u05dc\u05b7\u05d7\u05b9\u05d3\u05b6\u05e9\u05c1, \u05d9\u05b4\u05d4\u05b0\u05d9\u05b6\u05d4 \u05dc\u05b8\u05db\u05b6\u05dd \u05e9\u05b7\u05c1\u05d1\u05b8\u05bc\u05ea\u05d5\u05b9\u05df&#8211;\u05d6\u05b4\u05db\u05b0\u05e8\u05d5\u05b9\u05df \u05ea\u05b0\u05bc\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05e2\u05b8\u05d4, \u05de\u05b4\u05e7\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0-\u05e7\u05b9\u05d3\u05b6\u05e9\u05c1.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Though months are counted from <strong>Nisan<\/strong> (the spring month of the Exodus), the <strong>years<\/strong> are counted from <strong>Tishrei<\/strong>, marking <strong>the creation of Adam<\/strong> (Genesis Rabbah 12:9). Thus, <strong>Rosh Hashan\u00e1<\/strong> is known as the <strong>\u201cHead of the Year\u201d<\/strong> and a day of <strong>judgment for all mankind<\/strong> \u2014 not just for Israel, but for the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As stated in the <em>Mishn\u00e1<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt four times the world is judged: on Passover for grain, on Shavuot for fruits, on Rosh Hashanah all creatures pass before Him like sheep&#8230; and on Sukkot for water.\u201d<br>\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Mishnah_Rosh_Hashanah.1.2?lang=bi\"><em>Mishnah Rosh Hashanah 1:2<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On this day, we are not only judged, but also reminded of our <strong>purpose<\/strong>. God created man on Rosh Hashanah, expressing that the world is incomplete without us. But this day also recalls the first sin \u2014 the fall of Adam and Eve \u2014 and with it, the human need for reflection and repair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Spring Reminder \u2013 The Parsha Reading and the Omer Count<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Curiosamente, <em>Leviticus 23<\/em>, the passage that introduces Rosh Hashanah, is read in <strong>spring<\/strong> durante <em>Parashat Emor<\/em> \u2014 even though the holiday occurs in the <strong>fall<\/strong>. This coincides with the period of <strong>Sefirat HaOmer<\/strong> (Counting the Omer) between <strong>Passover and Shavuot<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En <em>Omer count<\/em> is a time of personal refinement. Each of the 49 days corresponds to a combination of <strong>seven emotional attributes<\/strong> (chesed, gevurah, tiferet, netzach, hod, yesod, malchut). The practice of <strong>Tikkun Hamiddot<\/strong> (refinement of character traits) is deeply embedded in this period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>15<\/strong>&nbsp;And ye shall count unto you from the morrow after the day of rest, from the day that ye brought the sheaf of the waving; seven weeks shall there be complete;<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-right\" data-align=\"right\"><strong>\u05d8\u05d5<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;\u05d5\u05bc\u05e1\u05b0\u05e4\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05ea\u05b6\u05bc\u05dd \u05dc\u05b8\u05db\u05b6\u05dd, \u05de\u05b4\u05de\u05b8\u05bc\u05d7\u05b3\u05e8\u05b7\u05ea \u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05b7\u05bc\u05c1\u05d1\u05b8\u05bc\u05ea, \u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05dd \u05d4\u05b2\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05d0\u05b2\u05db\u05b6\u05dd, \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05e2\u05b9\u05de\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d4\u05b7\u05ea\u05b0\u05bc\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc\u05e4\u05b8\u05d4:&nbsp; \u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05d1\u05b7\u05e2 \u05e9\u05b7\u05c1\u05d1\u05b8\u05bc\u05ea\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea, \u05ea\u05b0\u05bc\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05de\u05b9\u05ea \u05ea\u05b4\u05bc\u05d4\u05b0\u05d9\u05b6\u05d9\u05e0\u05b8\u05d4.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>(<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/mechon-mamre.org\/p\/pt\/pt0323.htm?v=fd3c46aff9\"><em>Leviticus 23:15<\/em><\/a><em>)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although this is a mitzvah for Jews, <strong>non-Jews (Noahides)<\/strong> can also embrace this period as an opportunity for <strong>universal ethical growth<\/strong>. Improving character, practicing compassion, and becoming emotionally balanced are not exclusive to any one faith \u2014 they are human goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Your Birthday \u2013 A Personal Rosh Hashanah<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rosh Hashanah is the \u201cbirthday\u201d of Adam. That idea invites us to consider our <strong>own birthday<\/strong> as a time for <strong>introspecci\u00f3n<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The day of your birth is the day G-d declared: <em>&#8220;The world cannot exist without you.&#8221;<\/em> It\u2019s not just a celebration \u2014 it\u2019s a calling. Take a moment to ask: <em>What have I accomplished? What can I improve? Am I fulfilling my unique task in the world?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A beautiful tradition is to read your <strong>birthday Psalm<\/strong>: the Psalm number that corresponds to <strong>your age + 1<\/strong>.<br>For example: if you&#8217;re turning 24, read <strong>Psalm 25<\/strong>.<br>(The Baal Shem Tov was taught this custom by his teacher, Achiyah Hashiloni (See <em>Sichot Kodesh<\/em> 5733, vol. 2, p. 9).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Can you receive gifts?<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cake with candles?<\/strong> Cake is festive and appropriate. But be cautious with <strong>candles<\/strong>. The practice of placing candles on birthday cakes originates in <strong>Greek pagan tradition<\/strong>, especially in rituals honoring <strong>Artemis<\/strong> (<em>see: Encyclopedia of Religion and Ethics<\/em>). In Judaism, candles symbolize the <strong>soul<\/strong> (<em>Proverbs 20:27<\/em>), and some avoid \u201cblowing out\u201d symbolic souls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Every Morning \u2013 A New Beginning<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Every morning is like a small rebirth. In Judaism, the day begins with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Siddur_Ashkenaz%2C_Weekday%2C_Shacharit%2C_Preparatory_Prayers%2C_Modeh_Ani?lang=bi\"><strong>Modeh Ani<\/strong><\/a>, a short but powerful prayer of gratitude:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI offer thanks to You, living and eternal King, for You have mercifully restored my soul within me; Your faithfulness is great.\u201d<br><br>This is suitable not only for Jews but also <strong>Noahides<\/strong> who seek to express daily gratitude. If morning is a moment of spiritual awakening, then the day deserves to be closed with reflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Every Evening \u2013 End the Day in Forgiveness<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>End your day with the <a href=\"https:\/\/opensiddur.org\/prayers\/solilunar\/everyday\/nighttime\/bedtime-shema\/prayer-of-forgiveness-from-the-bedtime-shema-translation-by-reb-zalman\/\"><em>Ribono Shel Olam<\/em><\/a> prayer. It is a nightly practice of <strong>forgiveness<\/strong> \u2014 for others and for yourself. It clears the heart and prepares the soul for restful sleep:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Master of the World, I forgive anyone who has angered me, harmed me, whether deliberately or unintentionally, in word or deed&#8230;&#8221;<br><br>The extended version continues with a plea not to repeat sins, and that any correction from G-d be done <em>not through suffering or illness<\/em>, but through <strong>compassion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWipe away the sins I have committed, with Your great compassion, but not through suffering or affliction.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion: Let Every Day Be a Mini Rosh Hashanah<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rosh Hashanah calls us to take stock of our lives. But its essence \u2014 self-reflection, character growth, and divine awareness \u2014 isn&#8217;t limited to one day. We hear its echo in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>el <strong>spring reading<\/strong> of the Parsha,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>el <strong>Omer count<\/strong> toward Shavuot,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>nuestro <strong>birthdays<\/strong>y<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>el <strong>daily rhythm<\/strong> of morning thanks and evening forgiveness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s not wait for the Day of Judgment to judge ourselves.
