But quickly, the tone shifts. The Israelites complain. Moses is overwhelmed. A craving for meat turns into a spiritual and emotional crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amid this chaos, we hear something surprising. Moses, the faithful shepherd, says to G-d: <a href=\"https:\/\/mechon-mamre.org\/p\/pt\/pt0411.htm?v=fa603a5d05\">Numbers 11: 21-22<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>21<\/strong>&nbsp;And Moses said: &#8216;The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand men on foot; and yet Thou hast said: I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month!<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-right\" data-align=\"right\"><strong>\u05db\u05d0<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b9\u05bc\u05d0\u05de\u05b6\u05e8, \u05de\u05b9\u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05d4, \u05e9\u05b5\u05c1\u05e9\u05c1-\u05de\u05b5\u05d0\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05d0\u05b6\u05dc\u05b6\u05e3 \u05e8\u05b7\u05d2\u05b0\u05dc\u05b4\u05d9, \u05d4\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05dd \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05e8 \u05d0\u05b8\u05e0\u05b9\u05db\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05e7\u05b4\u05e8\u05b0\u05d1\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9; \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b7\u05ea\u05b8\u05bc\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05ea\u05b8\u05bc, \u05d1\u05b8\u05bc\u05e9\u05b8\u05c2\u05e8 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea\u05b5\u05bc\u05df \u05dc\u05b8\u05d4\u05b6\u05dd, \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05db\u05b0\u05dc\u05d5\u05bc, \u05d7\u05b9\u05d3\u05b6\u05e9\u05c1 \u05d9\u05b8\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>22<\/strong>&nbsp;If flocks and herds be slain for them, will they suffice them? or if all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, will they suffice them?&#8217;&nbsp;<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-right\" data-align=\"right\"><strong>\u05db\u05d1<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;\u05d4\u05b2\u05e6\u05b9\u05d0\u05df \u05d5\u05bc\u05d1\u05b8\u05e7\u05b8\u05e8 \u05d9\u05b4\u05e9\u05b8\u05bc\u05c1\u05d7\u05b5\u05d8 \u05dc\u05b8\u05d4\u05b6\u05dd, \u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b8\u05e6\u05b8\u05d0 \u05dc\u05b8\u05d4\u05b6\u05dd; \u05d0\u05b4\u05dd \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05db\u05b8\u05bc\u05dc-\u05d3\u05b0\u05bc\u05d2\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d4\u05b7\u05d9\u05b8\u05bc\u05dd \u05d9\u05b5\u05d0\u05b8\u05e1\u05b5\u05e3 \u05dc\u05b8\u05d4\u05b6\u05dd, \u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b8\u05e6\u05b8\u05d0 \u05dc\u05b8\u05d4\u05b6\u05dd<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What follows is G-d\u2019s pointed response:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mechon-mamre.org\/p\/pt\/pt0411.htm?v=fa603a5d05\">Numbers 11: 23<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>23<\/strong>&nbsp;And the L-rd said unto Moses: &#8216;Is the L-rd\u2019s hand waxed short? now shalt thou see whether My word shall come to pass unto thee or not.&#8217;<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-right\" data-align=\"right\"><strong>\u05db\u05d2<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b9\u05bc\u05d0\u05de\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d3&#8217; \u05d0\u05b6\u05dc-\u05de\u05b9\u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05d4, \u05d4\u05b2\u05d9\u05b7\u05d3 \u05d3&#8217; \u05ea\u05b4\u05bc\u05e7\u05b0\u05e6\u05b8\u05e8; \u05e2\u05b7\u05ea\u05b8\u05bc\u05d4 \u05ea\u05b4\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05b6\u05d4 \u05d4\u05b2\u05d9\u05b4\u05e7\u05b0\u05e8\u05b0\u05da\u05b8 \u05d3\u05b0\u05d1\u05b8\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9, \u05d0\u05b4\u05dd-\u05dc\u05b9\u05d0.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At first glance, it seems like a moment of doubt. But as we\u2019ll see, the tradition invites us to look deeper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Looking Deeper: What Was Moses Really Asking?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many commentators were struck by this exchange. But instead of reading it as theological doubt, they offer a more textured picture of what was really going on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Da\u2019at Zekenim: Practical Concerns, Not Theological Doubt<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moses wasn\u2019t doubting G-d\u2019s ability\u2014he was grappling with the <em>purpose<\/em>. Why provide so much meat, knowing it would likely lead to excess and become loathsome to the people? He was asking a deeper moral question: <em>Will this really help them?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Ibn Ezra: Moses Didn\u2019t Expect a Miracle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En <em>Ibn Ezra<\/em> takes a more literal approach. He suggests that Moses genuinely didn\u2019t know a miracle was intended. He assumed G-d would use natural means to fulfill the promise \u2014 and was confused about how that would be possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn&#8217;t a lack of faith in G-d\u2019s power but rather an assumption about G-d\u2019s <em>mode of action<\/em>. Moses thought the goal was to justify his prophecy, not perform a supernatural feat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Or HaChaim: Multiple Layers of Concern<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En <em>Or HaChaim<\/em> offers two fascinating explanations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>First<\/strong>, Moses wasn\u2019t questioning G-d\u2019s power, but rather asking how a <strong>single type of meat<\/strong> could satisfy all the people\u2019s cravings. Maybe some wanted fowl, others wanted fish, others venison. He wondered if a single category of meat would suffice to quiet such diverse desires.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Second<\/strong>, Or HaChaim interprets the concern as being about the logistics of slaughtering and preserving the meat. Until this point, Israelites could only eat animals offered at the Mishkan (Tabernacle). Moses wondered if they even <em>podr\u00eda<\/em> eat their own animals freely \u2014 to which G-d responds: they now have that permission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Rashbam and Rashi: A Legal and Narrative View<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Rashbam<\/em> sees the issue as legal: Moses assumes that feeding so many people with the available flocks would either require a <strong>massive loss of life<\/strong> (to reduce the population) or a miracle \u2014 and he\u2019s not sure the people deserve that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Rashi<\/em>, in contrast, notes that only those who left Egypt \u2014 the 600,000 \u2014 were complaining, since they remembered the fish in Egypt. He underscores the <em>specific audience<\/em> Moses is referring to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. Toledot Yitzchak: Not Lack of Faith, But Strategic Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Toledot Yitzchak<\/em> argues that Moses wasn\u2019t doubting \u2014 he was probing, trying to understand <em>c\u00f3mo<\/em> G-d\u2019s word would be fulfilled. He even suggests that the people had plenty of livestock, but due to the requirement that all slaughter go through the Mishkan, they couldn\u2019t just eat it freely. Moses wanted clarity: Would G-d change the rules? Would He miraculously provide meat?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also suggests a psychological reading: Moses wanted to <em>delay<\/em> the fulfillment of their craving, hoping that doing so would prevent the deadly consequences of their gluttony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Woven Reflection: What Kind of Faith Do I Practice?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What emerges is not a portrait of a prophet in crisis, but a leader who dares to question in the service of compassion, justice, and truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do I leave room in my spiritual life for honest questions?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When I see something difficult in the world\u2014or even in the Torah\u2014can I wrestle with it without losing faith?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0Can I distinguish between doubting G-d and caring deeply about outcomes?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0When I am called to lead, do I simply obey\u2014or do I engage the challenge with heart and mind?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion: Faith That Thinks, Cares, and Questions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Moses didn\u2019t doubt G-d\u2019s power. He wrestled with its meaning. He took G-d seriously enough to <em>ask<\/em>\u2014to care about the how, the why, and the consequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s not weakness. That\u2019s greatness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a world that often confuses certainty with strength, Moses shows us another model: that real leaders\u2014and real seekers\u2014can stand in awe <em>y<\/em> still ask. They can believe deeply while also questioning responsibly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let this passage remind us: G-d\u2019s hand is never too short.
