They were invoking deep spiritual imagery \u2014 referencing beings the people had already heard of: the <strong>Nefilim<\/strong>, literally \u201cthe fallen ones.\u201d But who were these Nephilim, and why would their mention paralyze the nation with fear?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Fallen Angels or Fallen Ideals?<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>According to a powerful Midrash (Aggadat Bereishit), the Nephilim were not simply large men. They were once <strong>\u00e1ngeles<\/strong> \u2014 celestial beings who had criticized humanity for its weakness. When G-d announced the impending destruction of mankind in the generation of the Flood, two angels, <strong>Uzza and Azael<\/strong>, objected:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWhat is man, that You are mindful of him?\u201d (Psalms 8:5)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Their message was clear: Why invest in such a flawed creature as man?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>G-d responded by challenging them: \u201cIf you lived among them, you too would fall.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The angels took the challenge. They descended to earth, confident in their ability to resist sin \u2014 and failed almost immediately. Ensnared by earthly desires and drawn to the beauty of human women, they became corrupted. According to tradition, they were never allowed to return to Heaven.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>These were the <strong>Nefilim<\/strong> \u2014 not simply giants in stature, but <strong>giants who fell<\/strong>, both morally and spiritually.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>The Spies&#8217; Deeper Message<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Why did the spies bring up the Nephilim? It wasn\u2019t only to say, \u201cWe saw really big people.\u201d It was a coded theological message: Even angels couldn\u2019t survive down here. What chance do we have?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>In their eyes, living a life of holiness in a physical world was impossible. If celestial beings \u2014 pure and unburdened by human drives \u2014 couldn\u2019t withstand earthly temptations, how could human beings be expected to?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>But this was their tragic mistake.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Caleb and Joshua: Faith in Human Potential<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Caleb and Joshua disagreed:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIf G-d desires us, He will bring us to this land and give it to us.\u201d (Numbers 14:8)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>They understood something fundamental: <strong>G-d created the physical world specifically for us<\/strong>. Human souls are not inferior to angels. In fact, as the Tanya (ch. 2) teaches, our souls are \u201cliterally a part of G-d above.\u201d We were built for this world \u2014 with the strength to elevate it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>While angels recoil at earthly struggle, the human soul <strong>transforms struggle into holiness<\/strong>. That\u2019s our mission.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>What This Means for Bnei Noach<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>For Bnei Noach \u2014 non-Jews who seek to serve G-d through the 7 Universal Laws \u2014 this message is critical.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Your task is not to imitate Jewish ritual or spiritual practices meant for another mission. Like the spies who refused to enter the land, there\u2019s a temptation to think that spirituality only exists in &#8220;higher&#8221; religious expressions \u2014 to abandon the physical world in search of something seemingly more holy.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>But holiness is found <strong>precisely here<\/strong>: in your relationships, in your work, in caring for animals, justice, and nature. The Bnei Noach calling is to sanctify the everyday, to make the <strong>physical world a dwelling place for G-d<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Conclusion: Don\u2019t Fear the Giants<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The spies failed not because they lied \u2014 but because they lacked faith in <strong>human potential<\/strong>.
