His story is filled with drama, wisdom, leadership, and spiritual depth. In this teaching\u2014originally delivered by the Lubavitcher Rebbe\u2014we focus specifically on <strong>Yosef\u2019s dreams<\/strong> and what they reveal about the essence of <em>avodah<\/em>, inner spiritual work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the entire idea could be summarized in one word, it would be: <strong>Avod\u00e1<\/strong>\u2014the work a person must do on themselves to refine their character, elevate their life, and reveal G-dliness in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Based on Likutei Sichot, vol. 3, p. 805.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yosef\u2019s Dreams: A Quick Review<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yosef dreams <em>two<\/em> dreams, both pointing to his future leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dream 1: The Sheaves<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yosef and his brothers are binding sheaves in the field. Suddenly, Yosef\u2019s sheaf stands upright, and the brothers\u2019 sheaves gather around and bow to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dream 2: The Sun, Moon, and Stars<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the second dream, the sun, the moon, and eleven stars bow to Yosef\u2014expanding the vision even further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pharaoh\u2019s Dreams: A Comparison<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later in <strong>Genesis<\/strong>, Pharaoh dreams two dreams:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Seven fat cows swallowed by seven thin cows<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seven healthy ears of grain consumed by seven thin ears<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Yosef interprets both as one message: seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Torah explains why <em>Pharaoh<\/em> dreamt twice\u2014but does <strong>no<\/strong> explain why <strong>Jos\u00e9<\/strong> dreamt twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This opens the door to a deeper Chassidic insight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why Two Dreams? The Rebbe\u2019s Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Why does Yosef need two dreams if the message is similar?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why does Pharaoh dream about both animals <em>y<\/em> grain, while Yosef dreams first of the field and then of the heavens?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is the practical <em>avodah<\/em>-lesson for our lives?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The key lies in understanding the <strong>direction<\/strong> of the dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pharaoh: From Above Downward<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pharaoh\u2019s dreams <strong>descend<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>First animals (a higher form of life),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then plants (a lower form).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This reflects the nature of <strong>spiritual unholiness<\/strong>:<br>It always pulls downward\u2014toward ego, materialism, and coarseness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yosef: From Below Upward<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yosef\u2019s dreams <strong>ascend<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>First the field, representing physical work,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then the heavens\u2014sun, moon, and stars.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Holiness always strives <strong>upward<\/strong>.<br>Spiritual growth requires movement from effort to refinement, from physical struggle to inner elevation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Two Stories Illustrating the Principle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Rebbe brings two stories\u2014not to distinguish between types of people, but to highlight the <strong>core message<\/strong>:<br><strong>A life centered on the material naturally moves downward; a life centered on the Divine naturally moves upward.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the stories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. The Previous Rebbe and the Soviet Officer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the Previous Rebbe was arrested in 1927, a Soviet officer pointed a gun at him and said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis little toy has convinced many people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Rebbe calmly responded:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat toy frightens someone who has many G-ds and only one world.<br>But one who has one G-d and two worlds is not frightened by it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A person oriented toward spirituality lives\u2014and reacts\u2014differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. The Maharash and His Assistant, Ben Tzion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Maharash once asked his simple assistant, Benyamin, in front of his children:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhy do you eat?\u201d<br>\u2014\u201cTo live.\u201d<br>\u201cAnd why do you live?\u201d<br>\u2014\u201cTo be a Jew and to do what G-d wants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When he said this, he sighed\u2014an honest sigh of self-reflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Maharash turned to his children and said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is someone who understands the purpose of life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the Avodah in Yosef\u2019s Dream?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Binding Sheaves = Effort<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yosef\u2019s first dream takes place in a field\u2014symbolizing work.<br>Spiritual growth demands effort.<br>If something lifts you upward with no effort, it\u2019s likely not holiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Binding Sheaves = Creating Unity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The world looks fragmented.<br>Our task is to \u201cbind the sheaves\u201d\u2014to unify life, to gather scattered moments and experiences into meaningful purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Bowing to Yosef = Submitting to Higher Guidance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both dreams feature bowing.<br>In avodah, this represents humility\u2014recognizing guidance beyond oneself, aligning with higher truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Why Two Dreams for Yosef?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They represent two levels of spiritual work:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Work in the physical world (the field)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work in refined spiritual awareness (the stars)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Even at the highest levels, humility and guidance remain essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Final Story: \u201cWhere Are You?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Alter Rebbe\u2019s imprisonment, a high-ranking minister asked him why G-d asked Adam, \u201cWhere are you?\u201d<br>The Alter Rebbe answered:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cG-d\u2019s question \u2018Where are you?\u2019 is asked to every person, every day.<br>At a certain age, G-d asks a person:<br><em>Where are you in your life?
