Islam is not a way of life for Noahides<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou shall not make idols for yourselves, or set up for yourselves carved images or pillars, or place figured stones in your land to worship upon, for I the ETERNAL am your G-d.\u201d<\/em>
\u2014 Leviticus 26:1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This verse, a repetition of earlier prohibitions against idolatry, establishes a fundamental principle: a Jew must never lower themselves to the level of idolaters, even under pressure or in an environment where others do so. Rashi and Chizkuni emphasize that this command specifically applies to a Jew who is a slave of a non-Jew; even under the influence of a pagan master, it remains forbidden to follow their religious practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Noahides in today\u2019s society, the principle is the same: rituals or customs from other religions, such as Islam, should not be adopted, even if they appear monotheistic and intended for G-d. This is based on the prohibition of \u201cnot following the ways of the nations\u201d (Leviticus 18:3), among other sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Torah forbids following new religions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Torah explicitly warns against religious innovations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deuteronomy 12:30-31<\/strong> : Warns against adopting the religious practices of other nations in the service of G-d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deuteronomy 13:1<\/strong>: \u201cAll the matters that I command you, you shall diligently observe. You shall not add to them or subtract from them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deuteronomy 29:28<\/strong>: The commandments are for us and our children, forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Any religion instituted after Sinai, including altering or removing mitzvot, is forbidden. A prophet who adds a new law or changes the Torah is false and must be punished (Mishneh Torah, Foundations of the Torah 9).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Differences between the Torah and the Quran<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Quran differs in crucial ways from the Torah:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Muhammad added, altered, or omitted laws of the Torah; according to Maimonides, this makes him a false prophet, as explained in Mishneh Torah, Hilchot Yesodei HaTorah 9:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is also said: “It is an everlasting statute for all your generations,” and [Deuteronomy 30:12] states: “It is not in the heavens.” This teaches that a prophet can no longer add a new precept [to the Torah].<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, if a person will arise, whether Jew or gentile, and perform a sign or wonder and say that G-d sent him to:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

a) add a mitzvah,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

b) withdraw a mitzvah<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

c) explain a mitzvah in a manner which differs from the tradition received from Moses, or<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

d) if he says that the mitzvot commanded to the Jews are not forever, but rather were given for a limited time,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is a false prophet, as he comes to deny the prophecy of Moses and speaks in the name of G-d words that G-d did not command.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

G-d, blessed be His name, commanded Moses that this commandment is for us and our children forever, and \u201cG-d is not a man, that He should lie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Torah, following such newly introduced laws is forbidden. Below we examine the prohibition of erecting a pillar in more detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Forbidden rituals: the Ka\u2019aba as an example<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This verse makes it clear that erecting a pillar or figurative stone is forbidden, even if one serves G-d. Yet this is one of the foundations of Islam: the Ka\u2019aba in Mecca and the hajj pilgrimage are central rituals. Every adult Muslim who is physically and financially able is required to make this journey at least once in their lifetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rambam explains that Muslims who bow around the Ka\u2019aba and kiss stones are not engaging in idolatry<\/strong>, because their intention is solely directed at G-d. Still, it remains forbidden for a Noahide to emulate such actions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
