Below we examine the prohibition of erecting a pillar in more detail.

Forbidden rituals: the Ka’aba as an example

“You shall not make idols for yourselves, or set up for yourselves carved images or pillars, or place figured stones in your land to worship upon, for I the ETERNAL am your G-d.”
— Leviticus 26:1

This verse makes it clear that erecting a pillar or figurative stone is forbidden, even if one serves G-d. Yet this is one of the foundations of Islam: the Ka’aba in Mecca and the hajj pilgrimage are central rituals. Every adult Muslim who is physically and financially able is required to make this journey at least once in their lifetime.

Rambam explains that Muslims who bow around the Ka’aba and kiss stones are not engaging in idolatry, because their intention is solely directed at G-d. Still, it remains forbidden for a Noahide to emulate such actions:

The Ka’aba originally stood on the site of an idol, Merculis, and people threw stones there as part of idol worship.

When idolatry died out and Islam took over the site to serve G-d, following these actions remains forbidden for others, because the original ritual was intended for idol worship.

For Jews and Noahides, even if the act now serves G-d, it is forbidden to use a pillar or stone as a focus of worship, as explicitly stated in Leviticus 26:1 and explained by Rambam (Responsa ch. 160; The Divine Code 4th edition, chapters 3 and 5).

In short: bowing or directing rituals toward a pillar or figurative stone, even with the intent to serve G-d, is not permitted. The prohibition concerns structurally linking worship to an object originally intended for idolatry.

Remaining strong in your identity

For Noahides, it is important to remain faithful to the role and obligations defined for them within the Torah, even in a society where Islam or other religious systems may be present and influential. Just as a Noahide generally refrains from adopting Christian holidays that are not in line with Torah principles, they should also avoid adopting practices such as Ramadan or other rituals that belong to external religious systems.

Islam may appear appealing to some individuals for various reasons, including its clear monotheistic structure or its cultural and communal expression of faith. However, according to the Torah, the framework of obligations for non-Jews is already defined through the Seven Noahide Laws, and other religious systems are not true to the system given by G-d Himself in the revelation at Mount Sinai.

It is therefore important to remain grounded in one’s assigned role within Torah tradition, to seek guidance from a knowledgeable rabbi when needed, and to deepen understanding of both the Torah and the Seven Noahide Laws.

From this perspective, monotheism in Islam and any other religion do not constitute an alternative religious obligation for non-Jews. The Torah defines a distinct framework for Jews and a universal ethical framework for non-Jews. The Noahide path is not a separate religion, but the fulfillment of the divine expectations for all humanity as outlined in Torah tradition.

Conclusion

Leviticus 26:1 teaches us: do not lower yourself to the level of idolaters, even if those around you do. For Noahides, this means staying true to their own identity and the laws revealed by G-d, regardless of societal pressures or the appeal of other religions.haos follows.

Where it functions properly, violence is limited. That is not revenge.
