It is as though the Creator has left a trail of concealed lights throughout the Tanach, waiting for the patient seeker to discover that each light belongs to the same heavenly constellation.

Parashat Re’eh contains one of these hidden constellations.

At first glance, it speaks about the place that Hashem will choose for His Name to dwell, about the holiness of Israel, and about the covenant that binds a people to their Creator. Yet when these verses are read through the quiet language of gematria, they begin to open far beyond the borders of the parashah itself. Their hidden thread reaches backward to the fourth day of Creation, when the heavenly lights were first suspended in the firmament, and then stretches forward through the words of the prophets until it touches the mystery of the final redemption itself.

The hidden thread is the number 938.

What begins as a single numerical correspondence soon becomes something far greater. It becomes a journey from Creation to Redemption, from the heavens to the earth, from the chosen place to the chosen people, and finally from the darkness of night to the dawning of the Day of Hashem. And perhaps the most beautiful part of this journey is that it begins, not with the brilliance of daylight, but with the quiet mystery of the night itself.

The First Light Hidden in the Night

To understand why this hidden number is so remarkable, we must travel back to the very beginning of the Torah, to the fourth day of Creation. Until this moment, the world had already been formed, yet time itself had not been given its visible governors. Then Hashem spoke, and the heavens were adorned with the great luminaries—the sun, the moon, and the stars—not merely to illuminate the earth, but to become the great celestial witnesses to His order within Creation.

The Torah describes their purpose with familiar words:

וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים יְהִי מְאֹרֹת בִּרְקִיעַ הַשָּׁמַיִם לְהַבְדִּיל בֵּין הַיּוֹם וּבֵין הַלָּיְלָה וְהָיוּ לְאֹתֹת וּלְמוֹעֲדִים וּלְיָמִים וְשָׁנִים.

“And God said, ‘Let there be luminaries in the expanse of the heavens to separate between the day and the night; and let them be for signs, for appointed times, for days, and for years.'”

(Bereishit 1:14)

Hidden within this majestic verse are the words:

הַלַּיְלָה וְהָיוּ לְאֹתֹת

“The night… and they shall be for signs.”

These words possess the remarkable numerical value of 938.

At first this may appear to be little more than an interesting numerical observation. Yet the Torah rarely introduces a hidden pattern without inviting us to search for its deeper purpose. Why should the very first appearance of this number be found, not in the creation of mankind, nor in the covenant with Avraham, nor even in the revelation at Sinai, but specifically within the creation of the heavenly lights and the mystery of the night?

Perhaps the Torah is quietly teaching us that darkness is never the final reality. From the very beginning of Creation, Hashem established that even the night would carry signs. The darkness itself was not created to conceal Him forever, but to reveal what cannot be seen in the brightness of day. During the fullness of daylight the stars remain hidden from our eyes, though they continue to shine with undiminished brilliance. Only when night descends does the heavens unveil what had been present all along.

Is history itself not fashioned according to the same pattern?

There are generations when the Divine plan appears concealed, when the world seems enveloped in uncertainty and mankind wonders where the Creator is guiding history. Yet perhaps those very moments are not the absence of His Presence at all. Perhaps they are the appointed hour when Heaven begins to reveal its signs to those who have learned to look beyond the darkness.

If this is true, then the first appearance of 938 is no coincidence. Before there was a chosen nation, before there was a chosen place, before there was even a single prophet to proclaim the future redemption, Hashem had already inscribed into Creation itself the principle that would govern all of history: The night itself would become the place where His signs are revealed.

When Heaven Chose a Place upon the Earth

If the heavens were entrusted with signs, then it should not surprise us that the earth itself would also receive a sign. The Creator who appointed the sun, the moon, and the stars to proclaim His order in the heavens would also appoint one place upon the earth through which His Presence would become known to mankind. Just as the heavenly lights were not created merely to illuminate the world, but to reveal the wisdom of the One who fashioned them, so too the place chosen by Hashem was destined to become far more than a geographical location. It would become the meeting place between Heaven and earth, the point where the finite world reaches upward toward the Infinite, and where the Infinite, in His kindness, chooses to make His Presence known within the finite.

It is precisely here that Parashat Re’eh begins to unveil the next layer of this hidden mystery. As Moshe prepares Israel to enter the Promised Land, he repeatedly directs their eyes away from every place that human beings might choose for themselves and turns their hearts toward the one place that would be chosen by Hashem alone. The Torah declares:

כִּי אִם אֶל הַמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר יִבְחַר יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם… לָשׂוּם אֶת שְׁמוֹ שָׁם…

“But only to the place that Hashem your God shall choose… to place His Name there…”

(Devarim 12:5)

Hidden within this verse are the words:

הַמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר יִבְחַר יְהֹוָה

“The place that Hashem shall choose.”

Their numerical value is 938—the very same hidden number that first appeared on the fourth day of Creation in the words:

הַלַּיְלָה וְהָיוּ לְאֹתֹת

“The night… and they shall be for signs.”

This remarkable correspondence invites us to pause. The One who placed signs in the heavens also prepared a place upon the earth. The same Divine wisdom that established the celestial lights to guide mankind through time also established one earthly place through which His Presence would be revealed within history. The heavens received their appointed signs; the earth received its appointed sanctuary. One silently proclaims His glory from above, while the other bears His Name below. Together they testify that both heaven and earth exist for one purpose—to reveal the Presence of their Creator.

The Torah then adds another expression that appears almost incidental, yet upon closer examination reveals another hidden jewel:

לָשׂוּם אֶת שְׁמוֹ שָׁם

“To place His Name there.”

The Hebrew word לָשׂוּם, “to place,” possesses the numerical value of 376, precisely the same value as שָׁלוֹם—peace.

This is far more than a beautiful numerical coincidence. It reveals the inner purpose of the place Hashem chooses. His Name is not placed there merely to sanctify a location, but to establish the source from which true peace flows into the world. The placement of His Name and the revelation of peace are inseparable realities. Wherever the Divine Presence is truly acknowledged, harmony begins to replace division, purpose overcomes confusion, and blessing begins to overcome chaos.

Perhaps this also allows us to glimpse a deeper dimension of ירושלם, the city that the Creator chose to bear His Name. Throughout most of Tanach, Jerusalem is written ירושלם, a spelling that itself invites deeper contemplation. Before Jerusalem becomes the city from which peace will one day radiate to all nations, it must first become the place where Hashem chooses to place His Name. Only then can it truly become the fountain from which shalom flows outward to the entire world.

Seen in this light, the hidden thread of 938 becomes even more luminous. It begins with signs placed among the stars, descends to the place chosen upon the earth, and quietly prepares the stage for the revelation of the Divine Presence among mankind. Long before history unfolded, the Creator had already written this pattern into Creation itself, teaching us that the heavens, the earth, and the place of His dwelling are not separate stories, but chapters of one magnificent design, patiently awaiting those who are willing not merely to look—but, as the opening word of our parashah gently commands us, to truly see.

The People Prepared for the Place

Yet, the Creator did not establish a holy place without also preparing a holy people. The sanctuary was never intended to stand as an isolated monument, admired from a distance like one of the wonders of the ancient world. From the very beginning, the place chosen by Hashem existed for the sake of a relationship. It was the earthly meeting place where a people, shaped by His covenant, would draw near to the One who had called them to Himself. It is therefore no surprise that, only a short distance later within the very same parashah, the hidden thread of 938 quietly appears once again.

The Torah declares:

קָדוֹשׁ אַתָּה לַיהֹוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ

“For you are a holy people to Hashem your God.”

(Devarim 14:2)

These words also possess the exact numerical value of 938.

Now the hidden pattern begins to reveal its true symmetry.

The number that first appeared among the heavenly lights… that reappeared in the place Hashem would choose…, now rests upon the people whom Hashem has chosen – chosen to be a light – the educators unto the Nations.

This progression is too deliberate to ignore!

The heavens…

the earth…

and now humanity itself… are all being quietly woven together by the same hidden thread.

Perhaps this is precisely what holiness has always meant. Holiness is not separation for its own sake. Holiness is preparation. The heavenly lights were set apart from the darkness to become signs. The chosen place was set apart from every other place so that Hashem’s Name would dwell there..Now Israel is set apart among the nations—not because they are called to withdraw from the world, but because they are entrusted with revealing the Creator to the world.

The same Creator who sanctified time by establishing the heavenly lights now sanctifies space by choosing one place, and finally sanctifies humanity by choosing one people through whom His light would ultimately reach all mankind. Seen from this perspective, the repetition of 938 is no longer merely a numerical curiosity. It becomes a blueprint. Creation itself unfolds in three harmonious movements.

First, Hashem prepares the heavens.

Then He prepares the earth.

Finally, He prepares a people capable of becoming living witnesses to His Presence.

The chosen place and the holy people therefore cannot be separated from one another. A sanctuary without a people would remain silent, while a holy people without the place where Hashem caused His Name to dwell would remain incomplete. Each gives meaning to the other because both exist for the same purpose—to create a dwelling place for the Divine Presence within this world. Yet even this is not the end of the mystery.

For if the heavens have been prepared… if the place has been prepared… and if the people have been prepared… then one final question remains.

When? When will the purpose for which all these preparations were made finally be revealed?

It is here that the Prophet Yeshayahu quietly takes up the same hidden thread and carries it toward the mystery of the final redemption.

When History Becomes Part of the Sanctuary

If the heavens were prepared to bear signs, if the earth was prepared to receive the place where Hashem would cause His Name to dwell, and if a holy people were prepared to carry His covenant through history, then one profound question still remains.

When will all of these preparations reach their fulfillment?

The Torah intentionally leaves that question unanswered. It allows generations to pass, kingdoms to rise and fall, prophets to speak, exiles to come and go, while the chosen place, the chosen people, and the Divine promises continue to move steadily toward an unseen destination. It is as though history itself has become a journey toward a moment already known to the Creator from the beginning of Creation. Then, centuries later, the Prophet Yeshayahu gently lifts another corner of the veil.

He proclaims:

אֲנִי יְהֹוָה בְּעִתָּהּ אֲחִישֶׁנָּה

“I am Hashem; in its time I will hasten it.”

(Yeshayahu 60:22)

Hidden within these words appears the very same numerical thread that has quietly accompanied us from the opening chapters of Bereishit. Once again…938. By now, the pattern has become impossible to ignore. The number that first appeared among the heavenly lights…that reappeared in the place Hashem would choose…

that was then woven into the holiness of His people… now reveals itself within the mystery of redemption itself!

The journey is no longer simply from one verse to another. It is the unveiling of a single Divine architecture. The Creator first sanctifies the heavens by appointing the lights to become signs and appointed seasons. He then sanctifies the earth by choosing the one place where His Name will dwell. He sanctifies a people who will bear His covenant and reveal His light within the world.

Now, through the words of Yeshayahu, He reveals that history itself has also been sanctified.

The unfolding of generations is not random. The rise and fall of nations is not without purpose.

Even the long years of waiting belong to His design. History itself has become part of His sanctuary. This perhaps allows us to hear the prophet’s words with fresh ears. At first they seem almost impossible to reconcile: בְּעִתָּהּ — “In its appointed time” – אֲחִישֶׁנָּה — “I will hasten it.”

How can redemption possess both a fixed time and yet also be hastened? Perhaps because both belong to the One who established time itself.

The Creator who appointed the sun, moon, and stars to govern days, seasons, and years is not governed by time—He governs it. The One who established the appointed festivals also appoints the unfolding of redemption. What appears to human eyes as delay, acceleration, interruption, or coincidence is, from the perspective of Heaven, part of one perfectly measured design whose rhythm has been set since the foundation of the world. Seen in this light, the hidden thread of 938 becomes more luminous with every step. It is no longer merely linking verses together; it is revealing how the Creator prepares every dimension of existence for the revelation of His Presence.

First He prepares the heavens.

Then He prepares the earth.

Then He prepares a people.

Finally, He prepares history itself.

Each is sanctified for the same purpose. Each becomes part of one great sanctuary through which His glory will ultimately be revealed. Yet the mystery is still not complete. One final appearance of this hidden number remains, and at first it seems to overturn everything we have discovered. The prophet Amos does not describe the Day of Hashem as light. He describes it as darkness. Can the same hidden thread that speaks of signs, holiness, the chosen place, and the hastened redemption also speak of darkness? The answer, I believe, is the final key to understanding the mystery of 938. Only when we understand why Hashem placed signs within the night can we understand why the greatest dawn is preceded by darkness.

When the Darkness Begins to Speak

There remains one final appearance of this hidden thread, and at first it seems to overturn everything we have discovered.

The Prophet Amos declares:

הֲלוֹא חֹשֶׁךְ יוֹם יְהֹוָה וְלֹא אוֹר וְאָפֵל וְלֹא נֹגַהּ לוֹ

“Is not the Day of Hashem darkness and not light, even very dark, with no brightness in it?”

(Amos 5:20)

Remarkably, this is the only entire verse in all of Tanach, that possesses the numerical value of 938!

At first glance, this appears almost impossible to reconcile. How can the same hidden number connect the heavenly signs of Creation, the place chosen by Hashem, the holiness of His people, the promise that redemption will come in its appointed time, and now a prophecy describing the Day of Hashem as darkness?

Perhaps the answer has been quietly accompanying us from the beginning. The Torah never said that the signs would appear during the brightness of day. It said:

הַלַּיְלָה וְהָיוּ לְאֹתֹת

“The night… and they shall be for signs.”

This is one of the Creator’s deepest patterns. During the brilliance of midday, the stars remain hidden from human sight, though they continue shining with undiminished light. Only when darkness descends do the heavens reveal what has been present all along.

Perhaps the history of redemption unfolds according to the very same design.

There are generations when the Divine Presence appears concealed, when nations rage, when truth is obscured, when justice seems delayed, and mankind begins to wonder whether the Creator is still guiding His world. Yet perhaps those very moments are not the absence of His Presence at all. Perhaps they are the night in which His signs become visible.

Seen through this lens, the words of Amos are transformed. The prophet is not announcing that darkness will triumph. He is warning that the Day of Hashem cannot be understood through human expectations alone. Before the full radiance of redemption fills the world, humanity must first pass through a night in which every false light is extinguished. Only then can the true light of the Creator be recognized for what it has always been. Suddenly the hidden journey of 938 reaches its completion.

The signs prepared in the heavens lead to the place prepared upon the earth, which leads to the people prepared for His covenant, which leads to the history prepared for redemption, and finally to the darkness that prepares the world to recognize the Light that has been quietly shining since the beginning of Creation. Perhaps this is why our parashah bears the name Re’eh. It does not simply say, “Look.” It says, “See.” To see beyond appearances. To see purpose within waiting. To see holiness within the place Hashem has chosen. To see the calling placed upon His people. To see history moving according to His perfect wisdom. And perhaps most importantly, to learn to see His signs, even in the darkest night.

For the Noahide, this is not merely a mystical idea. It is a way of living! A Noahide serves the Creator not by waiting passively for the world to become bright, but by learning to recognize Divine signs even while the world still feels dark. This means choosing truth when confusion spreads, choosing moral courage when society weakens its boundaries, choosing reverence for Hashem when the world forgets Him, and strengthening loyalty to the Seven Laws as the universal foundation through which mankind prepares itself for redemption.

Every act of honesty, every rejection of idolatry, every moment of restraint, kindness, justice, prayer, gratitude, and faith becomes a small light in the night. These actions may seem quiet, but in the eyes of Heaven they are signs that a person has learned to see.

For those who seek the Creator with faithful hearts, the night is never empty. It is filled with signs. And every sign gently points toward the same eternal promise:

אֲנִי יְהֹוָה בְּעִתָּהּ אֲחִישֶׁנָּה

“I am Hashem; in its time I will hasten it.”

The One who hung the stars above the earth, who chose the place where His Name would dwell, who sanctified a people to bear His light, is the very One who guides history toward its appointed dawn. And if He has placed signs within the night, then every generation is called not merely to endure the darkness, but to lift its eyes toward Heaven, to discern His quiet handiwork, and to walk forward in faith until the first rays of morning break across the horizon.

In the Torah, numbers do not merely count words—they uncover worlds.

WHEN THE NUMBERS SPEAK

Insights into the Hidden Numerical Wisdom of the Torah

By Rabbi Baruch Simcha

There are moments when the Torah allows us to glimpse something hidden beneath its surface, moments when a single number quietly weaves together verses separated by centuries, revealing that what appears to be many independent teachings is, in truth, one continuous revelation.
