Israel will stray from G-d. The consequences described in the covenant will come upon them, and they will find themselves scattered among the nations. Yet this is not where the story ends. Moses tells them that from there they can return to G-d. G-d will receive their return and restore them.

Then Moses says something remarkable:

“For this commandment which I command you today is not beyond you, nor is it far away. It is not in heaven.”

No one needs to ascend to heaven to obtain it. No one needs to cross the sea to retrieve it.

“Rather, the matter is very near to you, in your mouth and in your heart, to do it.”

The Torah therefore makes an important distinction between the possibility of obedience and the impossibility of ever failing. They are not the same thing. Moses clearly knows that human beings can fail; he has just described Israel doing so on a catastrophic scale. But failure does not prove that G-d’s expectations were impossible from the beginning, nor does committing a sin place a person beyond the possibility of return.

Some of the classical commentators understand these verses as referring specifically to repentance. Sforno explains the words “in your mouth and in your heart, to do it” as the process of return itself. A person must recognize in his heart the wrong he has done and recognize the G-d against whom he has sinned. He must regret what he has done and confess it with his mouth.

This does not mean that repentance is always easy. Facing what we have done can be painful. Changing established behavior may require tremendous effort. Some consequences cannot simply be erased. But repentance is not inaccessible. It does not require a superhuman achievement or a journey into heaven.

Malbim develops this point in the circumstances Moses has just described. Israel might one day find itself in exile and wonder how return is even possible. There is no prophet available to ascend to G-d for them. They are far from the Land, without all the institutions necessary for the complete national observance of Torah. Malbim understands Moses as removing that excuse. What G-d presently asks is already within their reach: a genuine return of heart and soul and the sincere desire to do His will.

Other commentators understand Moses’ words more broadly. Rashi explains that the Torah is near because it has already been given to Israel in writing and through the Oral Torah. There is no need to ascend to heaven in search of G-d’s instruction. G-d has already revealed it.

Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch develops this beautifully. The Torah is near to us because its subject is ourselves, and its content is our earthly human life. Its concerns are not located in some remote spiritual realm. They are found in the way people live, choose, speak, work, possess, give, restrain themselves, and relate to one another. Israel is to learn G-d’s teaching, understand it with mind and heart, and then fulfill the final words of the verse: “to do it.”

This presents a very different picture of religious life from one in which G-d demands a state of absolute moral perfection that ordinary human beings cannot possibly attain. The Torah does not treat the first sin as proof that the entire enterprise has failed. Indeed, its laws repeatedly take human failure into account, providing ways to acknowledge wrongdoing, repair harm, accept consequences, and return to G-d.

The immediate covenantal context here concerns Israel. But Noahides worship the same G-d and live within the same moral reality. The Seven Noahide Laws are not an impossible standard intended to demonstrate that human beings are incapable of obeying G-d. They are commandments for actual human life.

All human beings fail. The answer is neither complacency—“Everyone sins, so it does not matter”—nor despair—“I have sinned, so there is no way back.” The relationship we have with G-d is the closest and most important one we have. Wrongdoing matters precisely because G-d’s commandments matter. Where harm can be repaired, repair it. Where behavior must change, change it. Recognize the wrong, regret it, acknowledge it before G-d, and return to what He asks of you. And as we know from experience, relationships become much deeper when we’ve tested each others’ limits, and made amends. Return to Him; He is waiting for you.

G-d does not demand that human beings first become heavenly beings. He addresses human beings living human lives on earth. We can obey. We can also fail. And when we fail, we can return.

The way back is not in heaven. That’s one of G-d’s greatest gifts to us.

Ahora, reflexiona sobre las siguientes preguntas:

Why is it important to distinguish between being capable of obeying G-d and never committing a sin?

What might cause a person to believe that returning to G-d is beyond his or her reach?

Sforno describes repentance in terms of recognition, regret, confession, and action. Which of these is most difficult for you?

Rabbi Hirsch emphasizes that Torah concerns our actual earthly life. Where in ordinary life do you most need to translate what you know into what you do?

Is there something you have treated as permanently broken when the real task is to acknowledge it, repair what can be repaired, and change direction?

What would it mean in your own life to believe that “the way back is not in heaven”?

Shabat Shalom

Por el rabino Tani Burton

Más shiurim del rabino Tani Burton

Copyright, todos los derechos reservados.
