It doesn&#8217;t command them to refrain from work on Rosh Hashanah, or give them the specific mitzvah of the day. When the Torah introduces the holiday, it says this, in Leviticus 23:24:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Speak to the children of Israel, saying: In the seventh month, on the first of the month, there shall be for you a rest day, a remembrance of the shofar blast, a holy convocation.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the language. <em>Speak to the children of Israel.<\/em> We should be careful here \u2014 we don&#8217;t want to manufacture some kind of imitation Noahide observance of Rosh Hashanah, as though the goal were to produce Jewish practice for people who aren&#8217;t commanded in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yet when we open the Mishnah in tractate Rosh Hashanah, something remarkable happens. The Torah addressed Israel. The Mishnah suddenly addresses the whole world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mishnah describes four occasions during the year when judgment takes place \u2014 four days that are literally called &#8220;Rosh Hashanah,&#8221; the head of the year. One of them is the one we&#8217;re about to celebrate. And regarding that day, the Mishnah says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;On Rosh Hashanah, all who enter the world pass before Him like <em>bnei maron<\/em> \u2014 as it says, He who forms all their hearts, who understands all their deeds.&#8221; (Mishnah Rosh Hashanah 1:2)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s not talking about all Jews, or Israel collectively. That&#8217;s <em>everyone who comes into the world<\/em> \u2014 every human being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So here is our first important distinction: <strong>the mitzvot of Rosh Hashanah were given to Israel. The judgment of Rosh Hashanah concerns humanity as a whole.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The verse the Mishnah brings as its proof makes this even clearer. It comes from Psalms 33:13\u201315:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Hashem looks from heaven. He sees all mankind, from the place of His dwelling He observes all the inhabitants of the earth. He who forms their hearts together, and understands all of their deeds.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The language couldn&#8217;t be more universal \u2014 <em>all mankind, all inhabitants of the earth.<\/em> He forms their hearts. He understands their deeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That changes the question. It&#8217;s no longer &#8220;how can a Noahide celebrate a Jewish holiday?&#8221; \u2014 that&#8217;s the wrong question. (And to be clear: I&#8217;d still recommend that anyone able to do so find an Orthodox shul, and ask if they may join for the prayers on that day \u2014 that&#8217;s absolutely appropriate. But it&#8217;s not the essence of what the <em>leyes<\/em> of the day require of everyone.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The real question becomes: what does it mean to know that there is a point in the year when our Creator looks at His human world \u2014 at every human life \u2014 and evaluates what we&#8217;ve done with it? And more importantly, what does it mean to be given another year afterward?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Three Images of Standing Before G-d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s go back to that phrase from the Mishnah: everyone passes before Him <em>k&#8217;vnei maron<\/em>. What does that mean? The Gemara itself asks the question, and offers three answers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Like sheep<\/strong> (Reish Lakish)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Like people climbing the narrow ascent of Beit Maron<\/strong> (an alternate reading)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Like the soldiers of the house of King David<\/strong> (Rava, in the name of Shmuel)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A flock, a line of climbers, an army under review. Three images. Maybe each one lets us see something different about what it means to stand before G-d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. The Sheep \u2014 Who am I becoming?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Picture a shepherd counting his flock. The animals can&#8217;t all rush through together \u2014 there&#8217;s a narrow opening back into the pen, and they pass through one at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humanity is enormous \u2014 something like eight billion people. Nations, cities, wars, economics, governments, generations. It&#8217;s easy for a single person to feel insignificant inside all of that. <em>Who am I? What difference do my choices make?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the image of <em>bnei maron<\/em> says something different: before Hashem, you don&#8217;t disappear into the crowd. You pass before Him individually. One life. One history. One set of decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s frightening if we think in terms of accountability \u2014 but it&#8217;s also an extraordinary statement about human dignity. You matter enough to be judged. Your choices matter enough that the Creator does not treat you as a statistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s a related idea in Pirkei Avot \u2014 maybe the most beautiful mishnah in the whole tractate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Beloved is the human being, who was created in the divine image.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The verse the Mishnah brings to support this wasn&#8217;t said at Sinai. It was said to Noah: <em>&#8220;For in the image of G-d has He made man&#8221;<\/em> (Genesis 9:6).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Human dignity and human responsibility belong together. If my life means nothing, my decisions mean nothing. But if a human being carries the image of G-d, then what that person does with their life matters enormously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>So the first question of Rosh Hashanah is: who am I becoming?<\/strong> Not how impressive I am, not how much I earned, not how many people know my name \u2014 who am I becoming? If I stood here again one year from now, what would I hope had changed in the person standing here?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. The Mountain Path \u2014 Where am I going?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second image: people climbing the narrow ascent of Beit Maron. On a narrow mountain path, you go single file \u2014 otherwise people bump into each other and fall off. You&#8217;re always either ascending or descending; approaching something or moving away from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This gives us a second question: not only <em>who am I<\/em>, pero <em>where am I going?<\/em> Judgment isn&#8217;t a photograph \u2014 it&#8217;s a trajectory. Two people can stand at exactly the same point and be in completely different situations. One has struggled with anger for years and finally managed, three times this year, to stop himself before saying something cruel. Another was once remarkably patient and has gradually become harsh and contemptuous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If all we measure is the snapshot, the first person looks worse. But look at direction, and the picture reverses entirely. <em>Where are you going? What is the direction of your life?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This distinction matters especially for a Noahide&#8217;s relationship to the day. Maimonides (Rambam) writes that a Noahide who unintentionally transgresses one of the seven Noahide commandments is exempt from punishment \u2014 genuine inadvertence is not the same as simply failing to learn what one was responsible to learn. Someone who says, &#8220;I thought this was permitted&#8221; when he should have known better is treated more seriously, closer to intentional wrongdoing, because he should have learned and didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That distinction suggests where the emphasis belongs. A Noahide doesn&#8217;t need to construct an imitation of the entire Jewish system of teshuvah for Rosh Hashanah. There&#8217;s a more immediate question: <em>now that I know \u2014 now that this has become clear to me \u2014 what am I going to do?<\/em> What am I responsible to learn? What am I responsible to change? The question isn&#8217;t whether we can climb back into the past and undo every mistake we made out of ignorance. The question is what we do with what we know now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;re here. The path continues. Which direction are you walking?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. The King&#8217;s Soldiers \u2014 What has been entrusted to me?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The third image is very different. A sheep is primarily an individual; a traveler on a mountain path is concerned mainly with their own route. But a soldier belongs to something larger than himself. He stands in formation. He has an assignment. His actions affect other people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suddenly Rosh Hashanah isn&#8217;t only about personal development \u2014 it&#8217;s about mission. What was I given here, and why was I given it? What part of the world was entrusted to me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of us lives alone. Each person lives inside circles of influence \u2014 self, family, friendships, workplace, neighborhood, community, humanity. We don&#8217;t have equal responsibility for all of these. I can&#8217;t personally end a war or eliminate poverty or repair every broken institution. But there is a corner of the world that changes because I&#8217;m in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where the seven Noahide categories of law become much bigger than a checklist of prohibitions. Taken together, they describe the foundations of a human civilization under G-d: a world where G-d is acknowledged rather than replaced by idols, where the divine name isn&#8217;t treated with contempt, where human life is sacred, where sexuality and family have boundaries, where property is respected, where cruelty to living creatures is restrained, where justice is established. That&#8217;s not a set of isolated tests for individuals \u2014 it&#8217;s the architecture of civilization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So maybe the third question of Rosh Hashanah is: <strong>what kind of world is being built around me, and what part am I playing in building it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Noah&#8217;s First Morning<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s a striking place to see this in the Torah itself. After the flood, Noah steps out into a destroyed world. No cities to return to, no familiar neighborhoods, no functioning civilization \u2014 the world he knew is gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What are G-d&#8217;s first words to him?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;G-d blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them: be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.&#8221; (Genesis 9:1)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the order. G-d blesses them \u2014 and the blessing immediately becomes a task. There&#8217;s a world to rebuild, a future to create. The chapter goes on to establish the sanctity of human life (&#8220;whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed&#8230; for in the image of G-d He made man&#8221;) and then the covenant with Noah, his descendants, and the living world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the first great Noahide moment after the flood holds three things together: <strong>blessing, responsibility, and future.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That matters, because when we wish someone a blessed year, we usually mean: I hope good things happen to you \u2014 health, livelihood, family, smooth going. There&#8217;s nothing wrong with asking Hashem for that; who else would you ask? But Genesis 9 suggests a bigger definition of blessing. G-d blesses Noah, and then gives him a world to build. Maybe a blessed year isn&#8217;t only a year where good things happen <em>a<\/em> me \u2014 maybe it&#8217;s a year where Hashem gives me the strength, the opportunity, the wisdom, the relationships, and the time for good things to happen <em>a trav\u00e9s de<\/em> me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Exercise: Three Columns for the Coming Year<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Have you ever thought about what a better world would actually look like? It&#8217;s easy to say &#8220;I want to make the world better&#8221; \u2014 that sentence costs nothing. So let&#8217;s make it concrete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take a piece of paper and draw two lines down the page, so you have three columns. Head them <strong>Self<\/strong>, <strong>Relationships<\/strong>y <strong>World<\/strong> \u2014 matching our three images of <em>bnei maron<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Self (the sheep \u2014 who am I becoming?)<\/strong> You stand before G-d as an individual. Ask: one year from now, what is <em>uno<\/em> change I would genuinely like to see in myself? Not ten \u2014 keep it to one real thing. More patience. Greater discipline. Courage. Honesty. Consistency. Better control of anger. More Torah learning. Less time wasted. Whatever it is \u2014 write down one thing, not what you think you&#8217;re supposed to write, but what would actually matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Relationships (the mountain path \u2014 where am I going?)<\/strong> Choose one relationship in your life that matters \u2014 spouse, child, parent, sibling, friend, colleague, someone in your community. Ask: if this relationship were genuinely better next Rosh Hashanah, what about it would be different? Make it concrete, not wishy-washy. Would you call once a week? Listen more? Apologize for something specific? Express appreciation? Set a boundary that&#8217;s missing? Write down one thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. World (the king&#8217;s soldiers \u2014 what has been entrusted to me?)<\/strong> Look outside yourself and ask which corner of G-d&#8217;s world is actually within your reach \u2014 not the entire planet, but your family, your congregation, your workplace, your neighborhood, your profession, an online community, a charitable project, a lonely person you&#8217;ve noticed, an injustice you&#8217;re actually positioned to address. Ask what &#8220;better&#8221; would concretely look like a year from now \u2014 something that could exist next year that doesn&#8217;t exist today. Write it down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now you have something more useful than a list of New Year&#8217;s resolutions. You have a direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Seen All at Once<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s one more extraordinary line in the Gemara. After offering all three explanations of <em>bnei maron<\/em>, it adds: <strong>and all of them are seen in a single glance.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s the paradox. We pass before G-d one at a time, and yet He sees us all together, at once \u2014 the individual and the world, one human life and all human life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s the perspective worth carrying into the new year. You are one person, and therefore you are not responsible for everything. But you are one person, and therefore you <em>son<\/em> responsible for something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world that passes before G-d on Rosh Hashanah is made of billions of individual lives passing before Him one by one \u2014 each with a heart, with choices, with relationships, each affecting other people. Each person capable of adding something to the human world, or taking something away from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rosh Hashanah doesn&#8217;t need to become a Noahide holiday in imitation of the Jewish one. You don&#8217;t need to borrow the commandments to hear what the day is saying. <em>All who enter the world pass before Him.<\/em> You&#8217;re already part of that sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, as the year begins: yes, ask Hashem for blessing \u2014 life, health, livelihood, peace, wisdom, protection. Of course. But maybe add one more question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If G-d gives me this year, what will I do with it? What kind of person will stand here next year? What relationships will be stronger? What small corner of the world will be better?
