Their souls are prepared to the point that they receive a certain form of intelligence, by which they attach their human intellect to that of the Causer. Then, a great emanation comes forth from the Divine Intellect to theirs. These are the prophets, and what they receive from the Divine Intellect is prophecy. It would require an extensive explanation, and it is not our intention to bring proofs here for all of the foundations of it, or an explanation of how it is attained, for it is the totality of wisdom; I only mention it in passing. The prophecy of one prophet can be greater than that of another. In all cases, they only glimpse prophetic visions at night in dream states, or during the day when sleep has overtaken them, as the verse states (Numbers 12:6), \u201cI appear to him in a vision; I speak to him in a dream\u201d. When they prophesize, their limbs tremble, and the strength of their bodies wanes and they lose their senses, leaving their minds free to understand what they see. And this is as it is written concerning Abraham (Genesis 15:12), \u201cand behold, a great dread and darkness fell upon him\u201d.
