La portion de la Torah consacr\u00e9e \u00e0 Toldot relate la naissance et la vie de Jacob et d'\u00c9sa\u00fc. La Torah dit que, d\u00e8s le ventre de leur m\u00e8re, Jacob manifesta et d\u00e9veloppa des tendances oppos\u00e9es\u00a0: Jacob \u00e9tait attir\u00e9 par le Beit Midrash, tandis qu'\u00c9sa\u00fc \u00e9tait attir\u00e9 par l'idol\u00e2trie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lorsqu'on approfondit cette question, on est profond\u00e9ment surpris de constater que le fils d'Isaac, notre p\u00e8re, si profond\u00e9ment attach\u00e9 \u00e0 Dieu, ait manifest\u00e9 des aspirations idol\u00e2tres d\u00e8s le ventre de sa m\u00e8re. Il ne s'agit pas de savoir s'il est devenu mauvais \u00e0 l'\u00e2ge adulte, car chacun est libre de ses choix\u00a0; mais comment est-il possible qu'\u00c9sa\u00fc ait manifest\u00e9 une telle inclination naturelle pour l'idol\u00e2trie alors m\u00eame qu'il \u00e9tait encore dans le ventre de sa m\u00e8re\u00a0? Il faut pr\u00e9ciser que cette inclination n'\u00e9tait pas mauvaise en soi, mais plut\u00f4t l'expression d'une volont\u00e9 particuli\u00e8re d'adorer Dieu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ma\u00efmonide explique en d\u00e9tail qu'il existe deux grandes cat\u00e9gories de serviteurs de Dieu\u00a0: les \u2018\u00a0d\u00e9vots les plus fervents\u00a0\u2019 et celui qui \u2018\u00a0ma\u00eetrise ses d\u00e9sirs\u00a0\u2019. Les premiers ne d\u00e9sirent que le bien, et leur service consiste en une ascension constante vers la saintet\u00e9. \u00c0 l'inverse, le second d\u00e9sire aussi le mal, et sa grandeur r\u00e9side dans la ma\u00eetrise de ses d\u00e9sirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jacob et \u00c9sa\u00fc, cr\u00e9\u00e9s par la nature, symbolisent ces deux voies. Jacob est par nature le d\u00e9vot le plus fervent, tandis qu'\u00c9sa\u00fc est celui qui ma\u00eetrise ses d\u00e9sirs. L'attirance naturelle d'\u00c9sa\u00fc pour l'idol\u00e2trie avait pour but qu'il la surmonte et dompte son d\u00e9sir. Ce r\u00e9cit explore la complexit\u00e9 des d\u00e9sirs humains. Ceci est pertinent pour le peuple noachide qui, tout en observant les sept lois universelles, peut rencontrer des difficult\u00e9s sur son chemin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chacun est libre de choisir sa voie, quelles que soient ses inclinations initiales. Chacun est responsable de ses actes et de ses choix. Le conflit entre Jacob et \u00c9sa\u00fc illustre les luttes int\u00e9rieures que l'on rencontre souvent entre aspirations spirituelles et d\u00e9sirs terrestres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ce conflit existe aussi sur le plan spirituel entre Jacob et \u00c9sa\u00fc. La Torah promet qu'\u00e0 la fin des temps, Jacob triomphera de ce qu'\u00c9sa\u00fc repr\u00e9sente lors de la r\u00e9demption compl\u00e8te. Comme il est \u00e9crit dans Abdias 1:21\u00a0: \u201c\u00a0Des r\u00e9dempteurs monteront sur la montagne de Sion pour juger la montagne d'\u00c9sa\u00fc, et le royaume appartiendra \u00e0 l'\u00c9ternel.\u00a0\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
