Esau married Canaanite women and settled in Seir, <em>the land of his possessions.<\/em> This stands in stark contrast to Jacob, who chose to dwell in the land of his forefathers, as a stranger, because he could not yet settle there. This fulfills the promise made to Abraham in <a href=\"https:\/\/mechon-mamre.org\/p\/pt\/pt0115.htm\">Gen\u00e8se 15:13<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>13<\/strong>&nbsp;Et Il dit \u00e0 Abram : \u2018 Sache avec certitude que ta descendance sera \u00e9trang\u00e8re dans un pays qui n&#039;est pas le sien, et qu&#039;elle y sera asservie ; et ils les opprimeront pendant quatre cents ans ;<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-right\" data-align=\"right\"><strong>\u05d9\u05d2<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b9\u05bc\u05d0\u05de\u05b6\u05e8 \u05dc\u05b0\u05d0\u05b7\u05d1\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05dd, \u05d9\u05b8\u05d3\u05b9\u05e2\u05b7 \u05ea\u05b5\u05bc\u05d3\u05b7\u05e2 \u05db\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9-\u05d2\u05b5\u05e8 \u05d9\u05b4\u05d4\u05b0\u05d9\u05b6\u05d4 \u05d6\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05e2\u05b2\u05da\u05b8 \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05d0\u05b6\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5 \u05dc\u05b9\u05d0 \u05dc\u05b8\u05d4\u05b6\u05dd, \u05d5\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05d1\u05b8\u05d3\u05d5\u05bc\u05dd, \u05d5\u05b0\u05e2\u05b4\u05e0\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc \u05d0\u05b9\u05ea\u05b8\u05dd\u2013\u05d0\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05d1\u05b7\u05bc\u05e2 \u05de\u05b5\u05d0\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea, \u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05e0\u05b8\u05d4.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This promise clearly applies to Jacob and his descendants, not Esau. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Genesis.37.1?lang=bi&amp;with=Ramban&amp;lang2=en\"><strong>Ramban<\/strong><\/a> explains on <a href=\"https:\/\/mechon-mamre.org\/p\/pt\/pt0137.htm\"><strong>Genesis 37:1<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>the promises made to Abraham\u2014including the mission to bring the nations closer to G-d\u2014were passed on to Jacob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The words <em>MeGuRei Aviv<\/em> (&#8220;the sojournings of his father&#8221;) can also be read as <em>MeGiyuRei Aviv<\/em> (&#8220;the places where his father made converts&#8221;<sup data-fn=\"e6c7d9a7-b580-4b0d-936f-b942a1fa3d01\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"e6c7d9a7-b580-4b0d-936f-b942a1fa3d01-link\" href=\"#e6c7d9a7-b580-4b0d-936f-b942a1fa3d01\">1<\/a><\/sup>). This emphasizes Jacob&#8217;s mission to bring the nations closer to G-d, just as Abraham did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Challenge of Esau&#8217;s Strength<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Esau grew into a powerful nation. As described in <a href=\"https:\/\/mechon-mamre.org\/p\/pt\/pt0115.htm\">Genesis 36:15<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>15<\/strong>&nbsp;These are the chiefs of the sons of Esau: the sons of Eliphaz the first-born of Esau: the chief of Teman, the chief of Omar, the chief of Zepho, the chief of Kenaz,\u2026<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-right\" data-align=\"right\"><strong>\u05d8\u05d5<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc\u05b6\u05bc\u05d4, <strong>\u05d0\u05b7\u05dc\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc\u05e4\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d1\u05b0\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9-\u05e2\u05b5\u05e9\u05b8\u05c2\u05d5<\/strong>:&nbsp; \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e4\u05b7\u05d6, \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05db\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8 \u05e2\u05b5\u05e9\u05b8\u05c2\u05d5&#8211;\u05d0\u05b7\u05dc\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc\u05e3 \u05ea\u05b5\u05bc\u05d9\u05de\u05b8\u05df \u05d0\u05b7\u05dc\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc\u05e3 \u05d0\u05d5\u05b9\u05de\u05b8\u05e8, \u05d0\u05b7\u05dc\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc\u05e3 \u05e6\u05b0\u05e4\u05d5\u05b9 \u05d0\u05b7\u05dc\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc\u05e3 \u05e7\u05b0\u05e0\u05b7\u05d6.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The phrase <em>Alufei bnei Esav<\/em> (&#8220;chieftains of the sons of Esau&#8221;) can also be read as <em>Alafim<\/em> (&#8220;thousands&#8221;). This suggests the vastness of Esau\u2019s descendants. Additionally, the word <em>Aluf<\/em> also means &#8220;learned one,&#8221; indicating that Esau&#8217;s leaders were not just numerous but also influential. According to <strong>Likutei Halachot<\/strong> (VIII, p. 212a-212b), these leaders sought to divert the Jewish people from their faith and mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Answer: Joseph<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer is immediately given in<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mechon-mamre.org\/p\/pt\/pt0137.htm\">Genesis 37:2<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>2<\/strong>&nbsp;These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren, being still a lad even with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father&#8217;s wives; and Joseph brought evil report of them unto their father.<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-right\" data-align=\"right\"><strong>\u05d1<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc\u05b6\u05bc\u05d4 \u05ea\u05b9\u05bc\u05dc\u05b0\u05d3\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05d9\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05e7\u05b9\u05d1, \u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05e1\u05b5\u05e3 \u05d1\u05b6\u05bc\u05df-\u05e9\u05b0\u05c1\u05d1\u05b7\u05e2-\u05e2\u05b6\u05e9\u05b0\u05c2\u05e8\u05b5\u05d4 \u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05e0\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d4\u05b8\u05d9\u05b8\u05d4 \u05e8\u05b9\u05e2\u05b6\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05d0\u05b6\u05d7\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5 \u05d1\u05b7\u05bc\u05e6\u05b9\u05bc\u05d0\u05df, \u05d5\u05b0\u05d4\u05d5\u05bc\u05d0 \u05e0\u05b7\u05e2\u05b7\u05e8 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d1\u05b4\u05dc\u05b0\u05d4\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d6\u05b4\u05dc\u05b0\u05e4\u05b8\u05bc\u05d4, \u05e0\u05b0\u05e9\u05b5\u05c1\u05d9 \u05d0\u05b8\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05d5; \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b8\u05bc\u05d1\u05b5\u05d0 \u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05e1\u05b5\u05e3 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05d3\u05b4\u05bc\u05d1\u05b8\u05bc\u05ea\u05b8\u05dd \u05e8\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05d4, \u05d0\u05b6\u05dc-\u05d0\u05b2\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05d4\u05b6\u05dd<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Joseph is named first among Jacob&#8217;s descendants, even before Reuben, the firstborn. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Genesis.37.1?lang=bi&amp;with=Rashi&amp;lang2=en\">Rashi on Genesis 37:1<\/a> Joseph represents the answer to Jacob\u2019s concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Rashi&#8217;s Parable<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rashi illustrates this with a parable:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;A flax dealer&#8217;s camels once entered a city, loaded with flax. A blacksmith wondered, &#8216;Where will all this flax be stored?&#8217; A clever man answered, &#8216;One spark from your bellows can burn it all up.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Esau represents the flax: vast and imposing, yet vulnerable. Joseph is the spark capable of destroying it all. This is further elaborated in <a href=\"https:\/\/mechon-mamre.org\/p\/pt\/pt1601.htm\">Obadiah 1:18<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>18<\/strong>&nbsp;And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau; for the L-RD hath spoken.<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-right\" data-align=\"right\"><strong>\u05d9\u05d7<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;\u05d5\u05b0\u05d4\u05b8\u05d9\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d1\u05b5\u05d9\u05ea-\u05d9\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05e7\u05b9\u05d1 \u05d0\u05b5\u05e9\u05c1 \u05d5\u05bc\u05d1\u05b5\u05d9\u05ea \u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05e1\u05b5\u05e3 \u05dc\u05b6\u05d4\u05b8\u05d1\u05b8\u05d4, \u05d5\u05bc\u05d1\u05b5\u05d9\u05ea \u05e2\u05b5\u05e9\u05b8\u05c2\u05d5 \u05dc\u05b0\u05e7\u05b7\u05e9\u05c1, \u05d5\u05b0\u05d3\u05b8\u05dc\u05b0\u05e7\u05d5\u05bc \u05d1\u05b8\u05d4\u05b6\u05dd, \u05d5\u05b7\u05d0\u05b2\u05db\u05b8\u05dc\u05d5\u05bc\u05dd; \u05d5\u05b0\u05dc\u05b9\u05d0-\u05d9\u05b4\u05d4\u05b0\u05d9\u05b6\u05d4 \u05e9\u05b8\u05c2\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05d3 \u05dc\u05b0\u05d1\u05b5\u05d9\u05ea \u05e2\u05b5\u05e9\u05b8\u05c2\u05d5, \u05db\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9 \u05d3&#8217; \u05d3\u05b4\u05bc\u05d1\u05b5\u05bc\u05e8.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Jacob is likened to a fire, symbolizing the truth of the Torah, while Joseph is the flame that spreads and strengthens this truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Role of Messiah ben Joseph and Messiah ben David<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cfire\u201d of Jacob can symbolically be seen as the truth of the Torah. However, it is only with the \u201cflame\u201d of Joseph\u2014a strong foundation and trust (<em>emunah<\/em>)\u2014that the fire can spread. Through education and faith, this flame touches the fuel (Edom) and burns it, resulting in the ultimate redemption from Esau\u2019s influence <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Genesis.37.1?lang=bi&amp;with=Rashi&amp;lang2=en\">Rashi on Genesis 37:1<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le <a href=\"about:blank\">Gemara Bava Batra, 123b<\/a> further illustrates that throughout the history of the Jewish people, on every occasion when they overcame Esau\u2019s descendants (including Amalek) in battle, it was achieved only with the help of Joseph\u2019s descendants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is therefore significant that <strong>Messiah ben Yosef<\/strong> (a messianic figure descending patrilineally from the Tribe of Joseph) will play a crucial role in bringing others closer to G-d (<strong>Rebbe Nachman\u2019s Torah<\/strong>, Berkowitz Edition, p. 274). This Messiah will destroy the enemies of the Jewish people and pave the way for <strong>Messiah ben David<\/strong> (descended from the Tribe of David) to end the Jewish exile and build the Third Temple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Lesson for our lives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Like Jacob and Joseph, we are tasked with living a Torah-based life and sharing its values with those around us. In doing so, we face challenges: external opposition and inner struggles with the <em>yetzer hara<\/em> (evil inclination). To overcome these challenges, we must build a strong foundation in the Torah and place our complete trust (<em>emunah<\/em>) in G-d, as Joseph did.
