This raises a natural question: <strong>why don&#8217;t Jews kneel before G-d\u2014and may Noahides do so?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s explore the reason behind Jewish customs, and what is permitted or advisable for Noahides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Don\u2019t Jews Kneel in Daily Prayer?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With the exception of <strong>Rosh Hashanah<\/strong> and <strong>Yom Kippur<\/strong>, when prostration is done in synagogue (typically on a cloth or towel to avoid contact with stone), Jews<strong> don&#8217;t prostrate themselves<\/strong> during everyday prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This practice is rooted in <a href=\"https:\/\/mechon-mamre.org\/p\/pt\/pt0326.htm?v=e2a67ab4\">Leviticus 26:1<\/a> which states:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td>1 Ye shall make you no idols, neither shall ye rear you up a graven image, or a pillar, neither shall ye place any figured stone in your land, to bow down unto it; for I am the L-RD your G-d.<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-right\" data-align=\"right\">\u05d0&nbsp; \u05dc\u05b9\u05d0-\u05ea\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05e9\u05c2\u05d5\u05bc \u05dc\u05b8\u05db\u05b6\u05dd \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b4\u05d9\u05dc\u05b4\u05dd, \u05d5\u05bc\u05e4\u05b6\u05e1\u05b6\u05dc \u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b7\u05e6\u05b5\u05bc\u05d1\u05b8\u05d4 \u05dc\u05b9\u05d0-\u05ea\u05b8\u05e7\u05b4\u05d9\u05de\u05d5\u05bc \u05dc\u05b8\u05db\u05b6\u05dd, \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b6\u05d1\u05b6\u05df \u05de\u05b7\u05e9\u05b0\u05c2\u05db\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9\u05ea \u05dc\u05b9\u05d0 \u05ea\u05b4\u05ea\u05b0\u05bc\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05d0\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05e6\u05b0\u05db\u05b6\u05dd, \u05dc\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05e9\u05b0\u05c1\u05ea\u05b7\u05bc\u05d7\u05b2\u05d5\u05ba\u05ea \u05e2\u05b8\u05dc\u05b6\u05d9\u05d4\u05b8:&nbsp; \u05db\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d3&#8217;, \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05e7\u05d9\u05db\u05b6\u05dd.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This verse prohibits the setting up of idols or pillars and bowing down upon a special stone surface\u2014even to G-d. While the patriarch Jacob once set up a pillar in worship (Genesis 28:18), G-d later forbade this for the Jewish people because such practices became closely associated with idolatry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mechon-mamre.org\/p\/pt\/pt0128.htm?v=e2a67ab4\">Genesis 28:18<\/a> states:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td>18 And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-right\" data-align=\"right\">\u05d9\u05d7&nbsp; \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b7\u05bc\u05e9\u05b0\u05c1\u05db\u05b5\u05bc\u05dd \u05d9\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05e7\u05b9\u05d1 \u05d1\u05b7\u05bc\u05d1\u05b9\u05bc\u05e7\u05b6\u05e8, \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05bc\u05e7\u05b7\u05bc\u05d7 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b6\u05d1\u05b6\u05df \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05e8-\u05e9\u05b8\u05c2\u05dd \u05de\u05b0\u05e8\u05b7\u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05b9\u05c1\u05ea\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5, \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b8\u05bc\u05e9\u05b6\u05c2\u05dd \u05d0\u05b9\u05ea\u05b8\u05d4\u05bc, \u05de\u05b7\u05e6\u05b5\u05bc\u05d1\u05b8\u05d4; \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05bc\u05e6\u05b9\u05e7 \u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05de\u05b6\u05df, \u05e2\u05b7\u05dc-\u05e8\u05b9\u05d0\u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05d4\u05bc.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/mechon-mamre.org\/p\/pt\/pt0516.htm?v=e2a67ab4\">Deuteronomy 16:22<\/a>, G-d reinforces this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td>22 Neither shalt thou set thee up a pillar, which the L-RD thy G-d hateth.<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-right\" data-align=\"right\">\u05db\u05d1&nbsp; \u05d5\u05b0\u05dc\u05b9\u05d0-\u05ea\u05b8\u05e7\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05dc\u05b0\u05da\u05b8, \u05de\u05b7\u05e6\u05b5\u05bc\u05d1\u05b8\u05d4, \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05e8 \u05e9\u05b8\u05c2\u05e0\u05b5\u05d0, \u05d3&#8217; \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05e7\u05d9\u05da\u05b8.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Leviticus.26?lang=en&amp;aliyot=0\"><strong>Rashi commentary on Leviticus 26:1:3<\/strong><\/a>, even kneeling or fully prostrating on a stone surface is forbidden for Jews\u2014<em>even in the worship of the One G-d<\/em>\u2014because it mimics pagan ritual and could mislead others.<sup data-fn=\"25751d0b-f80d-471a-a82a-8995298938aa\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"25751d0b-f80d-471a-a82a-8995298938aa-link\" href=\"#25751d0b-f80d-471a-a82a-8995298938aa\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Are Noahides Permitted to Kneel or Prostrate Before G-d?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The short answer is: <strong>yes, but with caution.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As explained in <em>The Divine Code<\/em> (by Rabbi Moshe Weiner), it is <strong>permissible for a non-Jew to kneel or prostrate themselves to G-d<\/strong>, whether in prayer or as a private act of awe and reverence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there are important guidelines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The action must be directed solely to the One True G-d<\/strong>, with no inclusion of foreign elements, symbolic objects, or ritual practices borrowed from idolatry.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A Noahide <strong>may kneel or prostrate on a stone floor<\/strong>, unlike a Jew, because the specific prohibition against doing so was only given to Israel.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>But<\/strong>, it is <strong>not permitted<\/strong> to designate a particular stone, floor tile, or object as a \u201choly spot\u201d for bowing or prayer. That turns a permitted act into something dangerously close to idolatry<sup data-fn=\"03692a6e-33a4-4a3a-b7b2-ad94d0e3fdf9\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"03692a6e-33a4-4a3a-b7b2-ad94d0e3fdf9-link\" href=\"#03692a6e-33a4-4a3a-b7b2-ad94d0e3fdf9\">2<\/a><\/sup>.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This concern arises because idolaters would often place a decorative stone or pillar in front of their god-image and bow to it. Even if the intention is pure, the act <em>appears<\/em> similar to pagan worship, and that\u2019s exactly what G-d wants to prevent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Lesson from the Jewish Commandments<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <em>Sefer HaMitzvot<\/em>, two specific negative commandments explain why these actions are forbidden for Jews:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Negative Commandment 11<\/strong>: Prohibits erecting a pillar\u2014even for the purpose of honoring G-d\u2014because it resembles idolatrous practice.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Negative Commandment 12<\/strong>: Prohibits creating a special stone for bowing, again even if meant for G-d, because it imitates idol-worship traditions.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These commandments are meant to <strong>guard the purity of worship<\/strong> and remove any practices that might be misinterpreted or misused. G-d, in His wisdom, distanced His people from anything that looked like idolatry\u2014even if the heart was in the right place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion: Permitted, but Is It Wise?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Noahides are permitted to kneel or prostrate before G-d, <strong>one might still ask: is it wise?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given how closely these gestures resemble the acts of idol worship, and considering that G-d has explicitly expressed hatred for such forms\u2014even when directed toward Him\u2014it may be <strong>more respectful and spiritually safer<\/strong> to follow the Jewish model and avoid them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is <strong>no lack of reverence<\/strong> in praying while sitting, standing, or bowing modestly.
