We\u2019ll also trace how later discourses, particularly from the Fifth Rebbe of Chabad, <strong>Rabbi Shalom DovBer (the Rebbe Rashab)<\/strong>, and the <strong>Rebbe (Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson)<\/strong> himself, uncover subtle insights in the Ba\u2019al Shem Tov\u2019s thought\u2014and how these insights can be lived, every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While these teachings were originally addressed to Jewish audiences in 18th-century Eastern Europe\u2014Poland, Ukraine, Russia\u2014where Jews lived mostly separate lives from non-Jews, these ideas touch the soul of every human being. I humbly believe they have broader relevance, and I\u2019ll explain why below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Setting the Scene<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We turn to a single verse from the Book of Lamentations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u05d6\u05b0\u05db\u05b9\u05a4\u05e8 \u05d9\u05d9 \u05de\u05b6\u05bd\u05d4\u05be\u05d4\u05b8\u05a3\u05d9\u05b8\u05d4 \u05dc\u05b8\u0594\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc \u05d4\u05b7\u05d1\u05b4\u05bc\u0596\u05d9\u05d8\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d5\u05bc\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05b5\u05a5\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea\u05be\u05d7\u05b6\u05e8\u05b0\u05e4\u05b8\u05bc\u05ea\u05b5\u05bd\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc\u05c3<\/strong><br><em>\u201cRemember, O L-RD, what has befallen us; Behold, and see our disgrace!\u201d<\/em><br>\u2014Lamentations 5:1<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Written by the prophet Jeremiah (<em>Yirmiahu HaNavi<\/em>), this book captures the sorrow and tragedy of the destruction of the First Temple, nearly 2,500 years ago. On <strong>Tisha B'Av<\/strong>, we mourn that destruction, and this verse becomes a powerful collective outcry: <em>Remember us\u2014our Temple destroyed, our glory lost\u2014take heed of our disgrace.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Desire Links a Prophetic Challenge<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Zohar draws a surprising parallel between Lamentations and a verse from <strong>Micah<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;My people, remember what Balak king of Moab plotted against you, and how Balaam son of Beor responded to him\u2026&#8221;<\/strong> \u2014Micah 6:5<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Micah presents a challenge from G-d:<br><strong>\u201cYou ask Me to remember you\u2014so remember Me!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This interaction reveals something striking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>G-d does not forget.<\/strong> He is infinite.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Humans forget.<\/strong> When we forget G-d, He mirrors that forgetting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>So when we say, \u201c<em>Remember us,<\/em>\u201d G-d replies: \u201c<em>I remember\u2014but do you?<\/em>\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, the verse becomes a mirror\u2014calling us to remember G-d in our lives, constantly and intentionally. Divine remembrance flows from human remembering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. The Spiritual Meaning of \u201cMa\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Le mot <strong>ma<\/strong> (\u05de\u05d4) literally means <em>\u201cwhat?\u201d<\/em> But in Kabbalah and Chassidic thought, it carries profound symbolism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u05de\u05d4 (ma)<\/strong> has a <strong>gematria<\/strong> (numerical value) of <strong>45<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>So does the word <strong>\u05d0\u05d3\u05dd (Adam)<\/strong>\u2014the Hebrew word for human.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This indicates a deep connection:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ma<\/strong> reflects the <strong>essence of humanity<\/strong>\u2014the spark of divinity in each person.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ma<\/strong> also implies <strong>nullification<\/strong>: a humble openness, a surrender of ego.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To ask \u201c<em>what?<\/em>\u201d is to acknowledge mystery, limit, and submission. In this way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ma<\/strong> stands for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The image of G-d in every person.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Humility and surrender in our relationship with the Divine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Two Teachings from the Ba\u2019al Shem Tov<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ba\u2019al Shem Tov taught two distinct lessons from this same verse, depending on his audience:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A. To the Great Sages<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These were Torah scholars who often looked down on the unlearned. His message:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cG-d, please remember our <strong>ma<\/strong>\u2014our essence, our nullification\u2014and reconnect us to it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They had acquired knowledge but lost humility. They had forgotten that every Jew, regardless of learning, shares the same divine soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Their plea:<\/strong> Let us remember our true humanity, which exists beyond intellect and rank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>B. To the Simple People<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These were Jews with little formal education but deep devotion. The Ba\u2019al Shem Tov\u2019s message:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cG-d, please remember our <strong>ma<\/strong>\u2014our humble, surrendered selves that are wholly devoted to You.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They lived with faith, often sacrificing with no grasp of the spiritual heights they were achieving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Their plea:<\/strong> Let our heartfelt surrender be remembered, even as we remain in exile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. The Dual Paths of <\/strong><strong><em>Ma<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So the same word\u2014<strong>ma<\/strong>\u2014has dual meaning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>For the learned:<\/strong> A call to restore humility and reconnect with the divine spark that lies beneath their knowledge.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>For the simple:<\/strong> A recognition that their sincere surrender already expresses the deepest form of ma.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In both cases, the verse speaks directly to the heart, meeting each person where they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>7. Working on Our Emotions and Intentions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Chassidic thought teaches that the human soul is distinct from animals in one core way: the power to direct emotions based on higher intellect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We ask ourselves:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do we love <strong>material things<\/strong>, or do we love <strong>Bon<\/strong>?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do we fear <strong>poverty<\/strong>, or do we fear <strong>spiritual emptiness<\/strong>?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This verse, then, becomes an emotional cry:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cHelp us invest our emotions in You. Align our love, fear, and decisions with our divine core.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>8. In Summary<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We began with the simple meaning of <strong>Lamentations 5:1<\/strong>\u2014a prayer that G-d remember our suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We explored the deeper meaning of <strong>ma<\/strong>: human essence, humility, divine image, and spiritual surrender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We saw how the Ba\u2019al Shem Tov applied the same verse to two very different audiences: the proud (to recall humility) and the humble (to affirm their devotion).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And we\u2019re left with questions for reflection:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Where is my ma?<\/strong><br><strong>Where is my essence\u2014as a human, as a soul, as a creation of G-d?<\/strong><br><strong>What do I remember\u2014and what have I forgotten?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In any spiritual station\u2014learned or simple, Jewish or not\u2014we all carry <strong>ma<\/strong>. We are all called to remember:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who am I? Why am I here?
