The focus of the sicha is a deep and layered exploration of what will happen to the <strong>non-Jewish nations<\/strong> in the <strong>Messianic era<\/strong>, analyzing <strong>biblical prophecies<\/strong>, <strong>halachic implications<\/strong>, and <strong>Chassidic teachings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Rebbe guides us through this complex topic by examining:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The prophecies of <strong>Bilaam<\/strong> and <strong>Zechariah<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Interpretations by <strong>classical commentators<\/strong>: Onkelos, Ibn Ezra<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Views of the <strong>Rambam<\/strong> and the <strong>Talmud<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And ultimately, how <strong>Chassidut<\/strong> understands the <strong>purpose of creation<\/strong> and the <strong>universal nature of Redemption<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Prophecy That Sparks Debate: Bilaam\u2019s Words<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Torah tells us in <strong>Bamidbar 24:17<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA star shall go forth from Jacob, and a scepter shall arise from Israel\u2026<br>it shall crush the forehead of Moav, and <strong>\u2018karkar\u2019 all the children of Shet (Seth).\u201d<\/strong><br><em>\u05d5\u05b0\u05e7\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05e7\u05b7\u05e8 \u05db\u05b8\u05bc\u05dc\u05be\u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9\u05be\u05e9\u05b5\u05c1\u05ea<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This strange word \u2014 <strong>\u201ckarkar\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 leads to two (amongst others) interpretations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Onkelos<\/strong> (Aramaic translation): <em>\u201cHe will rule over all human beings.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ibn Ezra<\/strong>: <em>\u201cHe will destroy all human beings.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Which is it? Will the nations be <strong>included<\/strong> in the Messianic future or <strong>eliminated<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Prophecies of Inclusion: Isaiah and Zephaniah<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A number of powerful prophecies speak of <strong>a universal redemption<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cAll the nations shall flow to [Jerusalem]&#8230; and He shall judge among the nations\u2026\u201d<br><em>(Isaiah 2:2\u20134)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cThen I will transform the nations to speak a pure language so that they all call upon the name of G-d.\u201d<br><em>(Zephaniah 3:9)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cThey shall come and see My glory&#8230; and declare My glory among the nations.\u201d<br><em>(Isaiah 66:18\u201319)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These verses clearly suggest that <strong>the nations will not be destroyed<\/strong>, but will instead undergo a <strong>spiritual transformation<\/strong> and become part of a global movement to serve G-d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>But What About Zechariah\u2019s Harsh Prophecy?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The prophet <strong>Zechariah (13:8\u20139)<\/strong> states:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTwo-thirds shall be cut off and perish, and one-third shall remain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Talmud (<strong>Sukkah 52b<\/strong>) records a debate on what this means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rabbi Yochanan<\/strong>: It refers to <em>two-thirds of humankind.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reish Lakish<\/strong>: It refers to <em>two-thirds of the Jewish people.<\/em> The nations? They will <strong>disappear entirely.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This seems to contradict the inclusive visions of Isaiah and Zephaniah. Which is it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Legal Clarity: The Rambam\u2019s View<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Rambam (Maimonides)<\/strong> provides a decisive <strong>halachic<\/strong> answer in his code of Jewish law:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIn that time, the entire world will be corrected to serve G-d together&#8230; all will return to the true religion and no longer steal or destroy.\u201d<\/em><br>\u2014 <em>Mishneh Torah, Laws of Kings 11:4; 12:1<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>legal implication<\/strong> is that the nations <strong>will remain<\/strong> and be part of the divine plan. Moreover, Jewish outreach to teach the <strong>Seven Noahide Laws<\/strong> today only makes sense if the nations have a meaningful future role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Two Models of Redemption<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabbi Serber, based on the Rebbe\u2019s sicha, presents <strong>two contrasting approaches<\/strong> to understanding the place of non-Jews in the Redemption:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Model 1: Subservient and Passive<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The nations lose their distinct identity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Their existence is <em>tolerated<\/em> only to serve Israel\u2019s mission.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They play a <strong>secondary role<\/strong>, on the sidelines of Redemption.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This view is reflected by <strong>Reish Lakish<\/strong> and <strong>Ibn Ezra<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Model 2: Integrated and Primary<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The nations retain their unique identity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Their moral and spiritual refinement is an <strong>essential part<\/strong> of the Redemption.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They play an <strong>active role<\/strong> in the Messianic world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This view aligns with <strong>Rabbi Yochanan<\/strong>, <strong>Onkelos<\/strong>, and especially the <strong>Rambam<\/strong> and <strong>Chassidut<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Chassidic Perspective: Transformation, Not Annihilation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Rebbe explains that what seems like \u201cdestruction\u201d in the verse \u201ctwo-thirds will perish\u201d is not physical annihilation, but rather a <strong>spiritual collapse<\/strong> of the false <strong>sense of independence<\/strong> from G-d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201ckarkar\u201d of all the children of Seth (humanity) refers to a <strong>dismantling of ego<\/strong>, not of existence.<br>Their <strong>separation from G-dliness<\/strong> will be eliminated \u2014 not their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By contrast, the Jewish people are described in the <strong>Zohar<\/strong> and <strong>Tanya (ch. 36)<\/strong> as being <em>\u201cone with G-d\u201d<\/em> \u2014 their essence is already rooted in divine unity, and in the Redemption, this will simply be <strong>revealed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Alter Rebbe on Universal Light<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Alter Rebbe<\/strong> (founder of Chabad) explains that in the times of Moshiach:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe physical world and body will be refined to receive the revelation of G-d\u2019s light\u2026 and from the additional radiance revealed to Israel, the <strong>darkness of the nations will also be illuminated<\/strong> \u2014 as it is written: *\u2018Nations will walk by your light.\u2019\u201d<br>\u2014 <em>Tanya, end of Chapter 36<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion: A Redemption for All Creation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The final message of the sicha is profoundly universal:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All of <strong>creation<\/strong>, including the nations of the world, was created <strong>by G-d\u2019s speech<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Israel<\/strong> was created through <strong>G-d\u2019s thought<\/strong> and is inherently united with Him.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the Redemption, <strong>all existence will recognize its true source<\/strong> \u2014 and the nations will experience this as the collapse of their illusion of independence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Redemption<\/strong>, therefore, is not about exclusion or conquest.
