in the image of G-d He created him; male and female He created them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, in <em>Parashat Noach<\/em> (Genesis 9:6):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of G-d He made man.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before covenant, there was <strong>conscience<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before <em>Sinai<\/em>, there was <em>derech eretz<\/em> \u2014 the path of moral awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Mirror of Conscience<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you were to stand before a mirror that reflected not your face but your conscience \u2014 what would you see?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Would you recognize there the image of G-d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabbi Akiva\u2019s words \u2014 <em>\u201cBeloved is man, for he was created in the image\u201d<\/em> \u2014 remind us that the <em>tzelem Elohim<\/em>, the divine image, is not a Jewish privilege but a <strong>human destiny<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every person bears that imprint and therefore carries a sacred obligation to do the Creator\u2019s will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Being Yourself \u2014 But Which Self?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Modern culture praises authenticity: <em>\u201cBe yourself.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But rarely does it ask, <em>Which self deserves to be expressed?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Torah\u2019s opening chapters give us a different message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Humanity is not a random accident of evolution \u2014 we were <strong>created<\/strong> <em>b\u2019tzelem Elohim<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet G-d has no form, no body, no shape.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what does it mean to be made \u201cin His image\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It means that within every human being lies a spark of divine reason, conscience, and creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To live without awareness of this truth is to confuse freedom with emptiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cBeing created in G-d\u2019s image is not a compliment; it\u2019s a calling.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dignity and Obligation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rashi explains that since man is beloved, it is therefore incumbent upon him to fulfill G-d\u2019s will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dignity and obligation are inseparable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be created <em>b\u2019tzelem Elohim<\/em> means to be charged with representing divine morality in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le <em>Tiferet Yisrael<\/em> (Rabbi Yisrael Lifschitz) \u2014 in his commentary on <em>Pirkei Avot<\/em> \u2014 beautifully expands this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By quoting Genesis 9:6, which applies to all humanity, he teaches that <em>tzelem Elohim<\/em> est <strong>universal<\/strong>, not covenantal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of humankind bears the divine image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Law and Moral Awakening<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maimonides (<em>Rambam<\/em>, <em>Hilkhot Melachim<\/em> 8:10) writes that Moses was commanded to ensure that all nations accept the Seven Noahide Laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le <em>Tiferet Yisrael<\/em> sees Rabbi Akiva\u2019s words as the <strong>moral counterpart<\/strong> to this legal duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He asks: If the Torah permits compulsion to uphold divine law,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cHow much more must persuasion through words of love be employed to awaken the hearts of all humanity to their divine origin?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabbi Lifschitz thus turns coercion into compassion \u2014 inviting humanity not to obey out of fear, but to awaken out of love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Image and Likeness<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le <em>Tiferet Yisrael<\/em> distinguishes between two expressions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tzelem (image)<\/strong> \u2014 the human capacity for reason, understanding, and free choice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tzelem Elohim (image of G-d)<\/strong> \u2014 that same capacity when fulfilled, when it leads to knowledge and service of G-d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Every person is created <em>b\u2019tzelem<\/em> \u2014 with divine potential.<br>But only one who acts with conscience, <em>because G-d commanded it<\/em>, truly embodies <em>tzelem Elohim<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, Genesis 9:6 \u2014 \u201cfor in the image of G-d He made man\u201d \u2014 speaks not of what we already are, but of what we are called to become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Potato, an Explorer, and Divine Curiosity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a remarkable historical note, written in the early 1600s, the <em>Tiferet Yisrael<\/em> mentions the English explorer <strong>Sir Francis Drake<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He records that the king of England sent Drake to sail around the world, and he returned with a plant previously unknown in Europe \u2014 the <em>bata<\/em>, ou <strong>potato<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To Rabbi Lifschitz, this was not a symbol of indulgence, but of <strong>intellect<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Human ingenuity \u2014 even discovering a new food source \u2014 testified to the divine wisdom embedded in humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such curiosity, he writes, reflects the Creator\u2019s own intention that the earth \u201cbe inhabited\u201d (Isaiah 45:18).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Exploration, when guided by curiosity and reverence, is sanctified discovery \u2014 the intellect serving divine purpose.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Healer: Compassion in the Image of G-d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Centuries later, another Englishman, <strong>Edward Jenner<\/strong>, discovered vaccination and saved millions of lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though he lived long after the <em>Tiferet Yisrael<\/em>, later editors noted his work as a modern fulfillment of the same idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drake and Jenner represent two facets of <em>tzelem Elohim<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The intellect that explores<\/strong>, expanding creation\u2019s boundaries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The compassion that heals<\/strong>, preserving life\u2019s sanctity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Both embody humanity\u2019s partnership with G-d \u2014 extending divine wisdom into the physical world, for the benefit of all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A World United by Values<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When humanity acts justly, guards life, and acknowledges G-d\u2019s sovereignty, it transforms potential into actuality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It fulfills creation\u2019s deepest purpose: that human reason should lead to the knowledge of G-d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, nations are divided by flags and frontiers. Institutions seek to unite us, but often fail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet imagine a world bound not by power but by <strong>valeurs<\/strong> \u2014 by the awareness that every human being carries the image of the Divine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Love, Accountability, and the Two Loves<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeloved is man,\u201d says Rabbi Akiva \u2014 yet this love also rebukes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be created in G-d\u2019s image means to be <strong>accountable<\/strong> to that image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To harm, degrade, or deny moral truth is to deface the likeness of G-d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yet, divine love endures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mishnah continues: \u201cBeloved are Israel,\u201d who are called <em>children of the Omnipresent<\/em> and were given the <em>precious vessel<\/em> \u2014 the Torah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that second love was preceded by the first, universal one: <em>Beloved is man.<\/em><br>This is the bridge that joins all of creation to its Creator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Torah of Humanity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the Torah of Israel came the Torah of Humanity \u2014 the moral law written in the human heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To live <em>b\u2019tzelem Elohim<\/em> is to think with clarity, choose with reverence, and act with compassion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every time a person does good because it is G-d\u2019s will, he fulfills the purpose for which Adam was formed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the voyager who mapped the unknown to the healer who cured the incurable,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>from the potato that fed nations to the moral act that preserves life \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>each reflects the Creator who brings order out of chaos, and light out of darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Living the Likeness<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe image of G-d is not a mystery to be solved,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>but a likeness to be lived.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>May we be blessed to remember that truth \u2014 and to live each day in a way that reveals the divine image within us all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Par le rabbin Tani Burton<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sukkatshalom-bneinoach.com\/fr\/category\/rabbi-burton\/\">Plus de shiurim du rabbin Tani Burton <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u00a9 Copyright, tous droits r\u00e9serv\u00e9s.
