Le verset indique que Joseph ne put plus se contr\u00f4ler devant ses fr\u00e8res. Deux questions se posent \u00e0 propos de ce verset. Premi\u00e8rement, pourquoi Joseph essayait-il de se retenir\u00a0? Deuxi\u00e8mement, que signifie la derni\u00e8re proposition\u00a0: \u2018\u00a0en pr\u00e9sence de tous ceux qui se tenaient devant lui\u00a0\u2019\u00a0?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L&#039;explication de cet \u00e9pisode par le Kli Yakar permet de r\u00e9pondre \u00e0 la premi\u00e8re question. Il d\u00e9crit en d\u00e9tail comment tout ce que Yosef leur a fait avant de se r\u00e9v\u00e9ler \u00e9tait soigneusement planifi\u00e9 pour leur faire prendre conscience de la gravit\u00e9 de leur p\u00e9ch\u00e9 (le vendre) et les inciter \u00e0 le r\u00e9parer.<sup>2<\/sup>&nbsp;Il leur infligea, mesure pour mesure, les souffrances qu&#039;ils lui avaient caus\u00e9es vingt-deux ans auparavant. Par exemple, il les jeta en prison, comme ils l&#039;avaient fait en le jetant dans une fosse ; et il garda Shimon prisonnier en \u00c9gypte, car il \u00e9tait le principal instigateur du complot visant \u00e0 lui nuire. Plus important encore, il les pla\u00e7a dans une situation aussi semblable que possible \u00e0 celle qu&#039;ils avaient v\u00e9cue tant d&#039;ann\u00e9es auparavant, o\u00f9 l&#039;autre fils de Rachel \u00e9tait en danger de mort. Allaient-ils enfin rectifier leur haine pass\u00e9e envers Joseph en \u00e9tant pr\u00eats \u00e0 tout sacrifier pour sauver Benjamin ? De fait, le r\u00e9cit de la Torah montre clairement que son but \u00e9tait atteint, car ils prirent de plus en plus conscience que les \u00e9preuves qu&#039;ils traversaient leur enseignaient la gravit\u00e9 de leur p\u00e9ch\u00e9 d&#039;avoir vendu Joseph, jusqu&#039;au moment o\u00f9 Juda d\u00e9montra leur d\u00e9vouement absolu au sauvetage de Benjamin.<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le Shem MiShmuel explique qu&#039;apr\u00e8s la supplique passionn\u00e9e de Yehuda, la Torah nous apprend que Yosef ne put plus maintenir sa feinte car, comme le d\u00e9crit le Midrash, Yehuda \u00e9tait sur le point de le tuer. On peut donc supposer qu&#039;id\u00e9alement, il avait pr\u00e9vu d&#039;aller encore plus loin.<sup>4<\/sup>&nbsp;La raison en est qu&#039;il s&#039;\u00e9tait rendu compte qu&#039;il n&#039;avait pas encore totalement gu\u00e9ri la haine et la m\u00e9fiance sem\u00e9es tant d&#039;ann\u00e9es auparavant. On voit que ses \u00e9motions \u00e9taient si fortes qu&#039;il ne pouvait plus se contenir, m\u00eame s&#039;il \u00e9tait conscient de l&#039;importance de prolonger l&#039;\u00e9preuve avec les fr\u00e8res.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Compte tenu de tout cela, le rabbin Yerucham Levovits fait une observation fascinante qui permet de r\u00e9pondre \u00e0 la seconde question concernant la signification de la phrase \u2018\u00a0en pr\u00e9sence de tous ceux qui se tenaient devant lui\u00a0\u2019. Le rabbin Levovits comprend que, ne voulant pas embarrasser ses fr\u00e8res en se r\u00e9v\u00e9lant devant tous les \u00c9gyptiens pr\u00e9sents, il les fit sortir avant d&#039;agir. Il note que Joseph \u00e9tait manifestement si \u00e9mu qu&#039;il ne pouvait plus poursuivre son plan initial, et pourtant, il eut la pr\u00e9sence d&#039;esprit de faire sortir tout le monde d&#039;abord, par grande compassion pour ses fr\u00e8res.<sup>5<\/sup>&nbsp;Cela d\u00e9montre l&#039;incroyable ma\u00eetrise de soi de Yosef, qui lui a permis d&#039;\u00e9viter de se d\u00e9voiler imprudemment devant tout le monde alors qu&#039;il savait que ce n&#039;\u00e9tait pas la bonne solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Un autre exemple de la ma\u00eetrise de soi de Joseph en p\u00e9riode de grande \u00e9motion se trouve au d\u00e9but du livre de Mikeitz, lorsqu&#039;il est soudainement sorti de prison pour rencontrer Pharaon. La Torah dit : \u201c Pharaon envoya chercher Joseph, et\u2026 \u00bb&nbsp;<strong>ils<\/strong>&nbsp;ils le firent sortir pr\u00e9cipitamment du cachot, et&nbsp;<strong>il<\/strong>&nbsp;Il se rasa, changea de v\u00eatements et vint trouver Pharaon.\u201d<sup>6<\/sup>&nbsp;Concernant sa sortie pr\u00e9cipit\u00e9e du cachot, le verset emploie le pluriel \u2018 ils \u2019, indiquant que ce sont les \u00c9gyptiens qui l&#039;ont fait sortir. Cependant, la Torah passe ensuite au singulier \u2018 il \u2019 lorsqu&#039;elle relate son rasage et son changement de v\u00eatements. Un commentateur sugg\u00e8re que cela indique que les \u00c9gyptiens ne l&#039;ont pas forc\u00e9 \u00e0 se raser et \u00e0 se changer, mais que Joseph l&#039;a fait de son plein gr\u00e9. Rachi explique qu&#039;il a agi ainsi par respect pour la royaut\u00e9, ce qui semble impliquer qu&#039;il s&#039;agit du concept torahique d&#039;honneur royal, par opposition \u00e0 une coutume \u00e9gyptienne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cela ne para\u00eet pas particuli\u00e8rement surprenant, mais il faut consid\u00e9rer le contexte. Joseph languit dans un cachot depuis douze longues ann\u00e9es, sans espoir apparent de salut, et soudain, il est arrach\u00e9 \u00e0 sa prison pour rencontrer Pharaon. Il serait tout \u00e0 fait compr\u00e9hensible qu&#039;une personne dans une telle situation soit tr\u00e8s perturb\u00e9e et confuse. De plus, elle serait sans doute extr\u00eamement impatiente d&#039;obtenir le salut et ne voudrait pas le retarder plus d&#039;un instant. Pourtant, Joseph resta parfaitement calme et garda son sang-froid pour demander \u00e0 Pharaon de se raser et de changer de v\u00eatements avant de le rencontrer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nous avons constat\u00e9 le sang-froid et le calme remarquables de Joseph dans des moments o\u00f9 la plupart des gens se seraient sentis agit\u00e9s et d\u00e9concert\u00e9s. \u00c0 l&#039;inverse, Jacob Avinou, l&#039;un des fr\u00e8res de Joseph, est critiqu\u00e9 par Joseph pour avoir failli pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment dans ce domaine. Bien des ann\u00e9es auparavant, Joseph avait commis une faute en d\u00e9pla\u00e7ant le lit de Jacob.<sup>7<\/sup>&nbsp;Lorsque Jacob b\u00e9nit ses fils, il reprocha \u00e0 Ruben son imprudence. \u00c0 cause de ce trait de caract\u00e8re, Ruben perdit son droit \u00e0 l&#039;a\u00eenesse. Les graves cons\u00e9quences de cette imprudence passag\u00e8re d\u00e9montrent \u00e0 quel point ce trait de caract\u00e8re est n\u00e9faste. L&#039;impulsivit\u00e9 pousse \u00e0 prendre des d\u00e9cisions irr\u00e9fl\u00e9chies sans en mesurer les cons\u00e9quences. C&#039;est apparemment ce que Jacob reprochait \u00e0 Ruben d&#039;avoir d\u00e9plac\u00e9 le lit de son p\u00e8re. Contrairement \u00e0 Joseph, Ruben avait agi impulsivement, sans r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir aux cons\u00e9quences de ses actes.<sup>8<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Il est remarquable que Joseph ait succ\u00e9d\u00e9 \u00e0 Ruben comme premier-n\u00e9 selon la halakha, recevant ainsi la double portion. Deux de ses fils, \u00c9phra\u00efm et Manass\u00e9, devinrent chefs de leurs propres tribus. L&#039;un des facteurs ayant contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 l&#039;h\u00e9ritage par Joseph des droits d&#039;a\u00eenesse r\u00e9side peut-\u00eatre dans le fait qu&#039;il excellait pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment l\u00e0 o\u00f9 Ruben avait \u00e9chou\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les qualit\u00e9s de calme et de ma\u00eetrise de soi trouvent de nombreuses applications dans nos vies. L&#039;une d&#039;elles est la capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 ma\u00eetriser nos \u00e9motions naturelles pour agir de mani\u00e8re appropri\u00e9e face aux \u00e9v\u00e9nements. Les grands Sages excellaient dans ce domaine. Un jour d&#039;hiver enneig\u00e9, le rabbin Simcha Zissel Broide, Rosh Yeshiva de Chevron, ouvrit la porte de la yeshiva pour sortir lorsqu&#039;il fut soudainement touch\u00e9 par une boule de neige lanc\u00e9e par un \u00e9l\u00e8ve trop enthousiaste, qui, bien s\u00fbr, n&#039;avait aucune intention de blesser son Rosh Yeshiva ! La plupart des gens se seraient imm\u00e9diatement retourn\u00e9s pour voir qui \u00e9tait le coupable, mais le rabbin Broide fit preuve d&#039;une telle ma\u00eetrise de soi qu&#039;il ne tourna pas la t\u00eate et poursuivit son chemin sans m\u00eame le remarquer. Son r\u00e9flexe fut de comprendre que le gar\u00e7on n&#039;avait rien fait de mal intentionnellement et qu&#039;il \u00e9tait donc inutile de l&#039;embarrasser en le regardant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bien s\u00fbr, ce type de r\u00e9action ne peut venir qu&#039;apr\u00e8s de nombreuses ann\u00e9es de perfectionnement personnel, mais chacun peut s&#039;efforcer de l&#039;imiter \u00e0 son niveau. Un exemple courant est celui du t\u00e9l\u00e9phone qui sonne \u00e0 la synagogue\u00a0: il est \u00e9vident qu&#039;il faut veiller \u00e0 \u00e9teindre son t\u00e9l\u00e9phone avant d&#039;entrer, mais il arrive que l&#039;on l&#039;oublie. Quoi qu&#039;il en soit, que le propri\u00e9taire du t\u00e9l\u00e9phone soit coupable ou non, il ne semble pas y avoir grand int\u00e9r\u00eat \u00e0 se retourner pour voir qui c&#039;est\u00a0: il l&#039;\u00e9teindra imm\u00e9diatement, que l&#039;on regarde ou non, et le regarder ne fait que le g\u00eaner. S&#039;abstenir de regarder exige \u00e9galement, \u00e0 son niveau, la capacit\u00e9 de r\u00e9agir en une fraction de seconde avec ma\u00eetrise.
