{"id":24547,"date":"2026-06-06T19:56:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-06T18:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sukkatshalom-bneinoach.com\/?p=24547"},"modified":"2026-06-06T19:56:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-06T18:56:10","slug":"the-land-the-good-and-the-hidden-light","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sukkatshalom-bneinoach.com\/fr\/the-land-the-good-and-the-hidden-light\/","title":{"rendered":"THE LAND, THE GOOD, AND THE HIDDEN LIGHT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-text-align-right wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u05d1\u05e1 \"\u05d3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UNE R\u00c9FLEXION SUR\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sukkatshalom-bneinoach.com\/fr\/parasja\/\">PARSHAT<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>SHLACH 5786<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Numbers 13:18-20, we read that Moses sent the spies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cSee what kind of land it is, and the people who live in it: are they strong or weak, few or many? Is the land in which they live good or bad? Are the cities open or fortified? Is the soil rich or poor? Are there trees? Bring back some of the fruit of the land.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first glance, this seems like a simple task: a survey of the Promised Land. But those who read the classical commentaries quickly realize that Moses was not acting out of doubt. The land had already been promised by G-d \u2014 a land \u201cflowing with milk and honey.\u201d Why, then, these questions?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Question Without Doubt<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Rashi on Numbers 13:19 , the term \u201cgood\u201d is not a general evaluation but refers to concrete features: the quality of the water and the livability of the land. Ibn Ezra and Nachmanides (ibid) interpret it practically: climate, fertility, and agricultural potential. Sforno emphasizes water quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It becomes clear: Moses was not asking <em>si<\/em> the land was good, but <em>in what way<\/em> it was good \u2014 or challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Unpacking the Word \u201cGood\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nachmanides (ibid) emphasizes that \u201cgood\u201d is not a simple, one-dimensional term. It is a broad concept encompassing fertility, wealth, stability, and quality of life. That is why Moses does not stop at the single question. He breaks it down:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is the land fertile or poor?\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are there trees?\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How are the cities constructed?\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What at first seems like a simple question turns into an invitation for careful observation. Goodness is never superficial \u2014 it requires attention, understanding, and preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A concrete example of something that appears good but can be negative: a land with abundant crops, flourishing cities, and plentiful rivers. At first, everything seems perfect. But this abundance may lead the inhabitants \u2014 or even the Israelites \u2014 to pride, forgetting that their blessings come from God. The good, in this case, becomes a challenge, an \u201cenemy in disguise\u201d that can draw us away from G-d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversely, what seems bad can hide goodness. A land with rugged mountains or barren plains may appear harsh and difficult. Yet, it forces people to cooperate, persevere, and rely on G-d. What initially seems like a threat can actually foster spiritual growth and character development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Hidden Good in Everything<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This idea is also found in the Baal Shem Tov in the <em>Kesser Shem Tov<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cIn every physical thing there is good and evil \u2014 the physicality of it is evil, and the Divine energy which is its source is good. When a person connects to the Divine source within any physical thing, even something that seems \u2018evil\u2019 or material, it can be transformed and elevated.\u201d<\/em><br>(<a href=\"https:\/\/kabbalahwisdom.org\/the-practical-wisdom-of-the-baal-shem-tov\">https:\/\/kabbalahwisdom.org\/the-practical-wisdom-of-the-baal-shem-tov<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything in the world, even what appears heavy, limiting, or negative, contains a hidden divine core. What we perceive as \u201cevil\u201d is often only a veil over an inner good, waiting to be revealed through awareness and action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Life as a Battlefield of Tests<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This idea is further developed in <em>Mesillat Yesharim<\/em> (Chapter 1:8), which reframes the entire human condition as a continuous test:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It follows that man is truly placed within a great and powerful battle, for all matters of this world, whether for good or for bad, are tests for a person. Poverty on one side and wealth on the other, as Solomon said (Proverbs 30): \u201cLest I be full and deny You, and say: \u2018Who is the Lord?\u2019 or lest I be poor and steal\u2026\u201d Peace and tranquility on one side, and suffering on the other, until the battle is waged against him from every direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thus, man is placed in the midst of a raging battlefield. Everything in life \u2014 whether experienced as good or bad \u2014 is a test. Poverty on one side and wealth on the other. Comfort on one side and suffering on the other. The struggle surrounds a person from every direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this framing, nothing is neutral. Both abundance and lack, ease and difficulty, are conditions through which a person is tested and refined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Power of Perception<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moses also asked about the people: <em>\u201cAre they strong or weak?\u201d<\/em> According to the Lubavicher Rebbe (1. Likutei Sichot, vol. 4, p. 1314. Daily Wisdom Volume 3. Inspiring insights on the Torah portion from the Lubavitcher Rebbe \u00a0 p 298) this teaches a fundamental truth: in confronting the material world \u2014 our \u201cenemy\u201d that tries to pull us away from G-d \u2014 the following applies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cNo matter how strong and overwhelming this materiality appears, if we dedicate ourselves fully to the battle, the enemy will be weakened by our resolve. This is why Moses mentions \u2018strong\u2019 before \u2018weak\u2019: we must be prepared for the challenge, and through our efforts it will ultimately be overcome.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The good can thus be challenging, and the bad can conceal hidden good. Both invite us to observe, reflect, and actively connect with G-d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Lesson for Today<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moses\u2019 words to the spies invite us to look deeper:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The good in the world often comes with challenges; it can distract us from G-d if we are not vigilant.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What initially seems bad can bring us closer to G-d, building resilience, insight, and spiritual strength.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood\u201d is never simple or superficial. It calls for observation, understanding, and connection with the source of all that exists.
