{"id":10819,"date":"2023-08-18T13:50:41","date_gmt":"2023-08-18T12:50:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sukkatshalom-bneinoach.com\/?p=10819"},"modified":"2025-08-17T14:34:21","modified_gmt":"2025-08-17T13:34:21","slug":"parshat-shoftim-look-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sukkatshalom-bneinoach.com\/he\/parshat-shoftim-look-down\/","title":{"rendered":"PARSHAT SHOFTIM &#8211; LOOK &#8211; LOOK DOWN!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWhen Hashem your G-d will expand your territory as He swore to your forefathers, and gives you the entire land which He promised to give your forefathers; when you keep this entire commandment that I am commanding you today to fulfill it \u2013 to love Hashem your G-d and to follow in His ways always \u2013 then you shall add for yourself another three cities to these three\u201d (Deuteronomy 19:8-9).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This passage is describing how at some future time, we will add an additional three cities <a><\/a>of refuge to the three already established in the land of Israel proper (19:1-3), where those who kill unintentionally can flee from relatives of the victim intent on seeking revenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maimonides (Rambam) maintains that these three new cities will be added in the Messianic age (Laws of Kings 11:1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u05d4\u05d0\u05dd \u05d6\u05d4 \u05d4\u05d2\u05d9\u05d5\u05e0\u05d9? \u05d1\u05d0\u05d5\u05d8\u05d5\u05e4\u05d9\u05d4 \u05d4\u05de\u05e9\u05d9\u05d7\u05d9\u05ea \u05d4\u05e2\u05ea\u05d9\u05d3\u05d9\u05ea, \u05dc\u05d0 \u05d9\u05d4\u05d9\u05d5 \u05d4\u05e8\u05d1\u05d4 \u05d4\u05e8\u05d2. \u05d0\u05e0\u05d5 \u05e2\u05e9\u05d5\u05d9\u05d9\u05dd \u05dc\u05e6\u05e4\u05d5\u05ea \u05dc\u05d1\u05d8\u05dc \u05dc\u05d7\u05dc\u05d5\u05d8\u05d9\u05df \u05d0\u05ea \u05e2\u05e8\u05d9 \u05d4\u05de\u05e7\u05dc\u05d8, \u05d0\u05d5 \u05d0\u05d5\u05dc\u05d9 \u05dc\u05d1\u05d8\u05dc \u05db\u05de\u05d4 \u05de\u05d4\u05df. \u05d0\u05d1\u05dc \u05dc\u05de\u05d4 \u05e0\u05e6\u05d8\u05e8\u05da \u05e2\u05e8\u05d9 \u05de\u05e7\u05dc\u05d8 \u05e0\u05d5\u05e1\u05e4\u05d5\u05ea?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We encounter a similar problem with the Torah reading for the afternoon of Yom Kippur, which deals with the prohibited sexual relationships found in Leviticus chapter 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yom Kippur comes at the end of the Ten Days of Repentance that begins with Rosh HaShanah (the Jewish New Year). And this period is preceded by the month of Elul \u2013 30 days spent preparing for the High Holidays. The afternoon of Yom Kippur is the high point of these 40 days of intense spiritual work.
