This event didn’t just mark the change of leader, but was a change in the type of leadership and a preparation to fill the world with the wisdom of Torah.
Based on Hitvaaduyot 5747, vol. 3, p. 191.

Parashat Pinchas: Why Joshua Succeeded Moses

One of the central themes in this week’s Torah portion, Parashat Pinchas, is the transition of leadership from Moses to his greatest disciple, Joshua.

The Torah tells us that Moses understood he would not enter the Land of Canaan to transform it into the Land of Israel. Knowing that the Jewish people would soon require a new leader, he prayed to G-d to appoint someone who could guide them after his passing.

Moses may have expected that one of his own sons would inherit this responsibility. Yet G-d had different plans.

G-d instructed Moses to take Joshua, his faithful student, place his hands upon him, and transfer to him part of his authority, wisdom, and leadership. Moses obeyed, publicly appointing Joshua before the people of Israel.

Our Sages describe this unique transition with a beautiful metaphor: Moses was like the sun, and Joshua was like the moon.

Just as the moon has no light of its own but reflects the light of the sun, Joshua’s leadership would reflect everything he had learned from his teacher. Yet, as we shall see, that reflected light would illuminate the world in a new and different way.

Joshua: The Disciple Who Never Left His Teacher

The first reason Joshua was chosen lies in his extraordinary dedication as a student.

The Sages explain the verse that says, “Joshua, son of Nun, did not depart from the Tent.” Whenever Moses entered the Tent of Meeting, Joshua was there. Whenever Moses left, Joshua remained. He constantly stayed at his teacher’s side, learning not only Torah but also leadership, judgment, wisdom, and practical experience.

Joshua absorbed everything Moses had to offer.

This resembles the relationship between the moon and the sun. The moon does not generate its own light. Instead, it receives the sun’s light and reflects it faithfully.

A similar idea appears in the life of Rabbi Eliezer. He famously declared:

“I never said anything that I did not learn from my teachers.”

Of course, Rabbi Eliezer contributed enormously to the Oral Torah. Nevertheless, he viewed himself not as an inventor of new wisdom, but as someone who faithfully transmitted and expressed what he had received.

Joshua possessed this same humility. Before becoming a leader, he first became the perfect student.

Why Moses Could Not Complete the Mission

Yet this raises an important question.

If Moses was the greatest prophet who ever lived, why was he not the one to lead the people into the Land of Canaan and transform it into the Holy Land?

The Torah describes the land’s previous inhabitants as people whose idolatry, immorality, and corruption were deeply offensive to G-d. Their behavior had reached such a level that G-d determined they could no longer remain in the land.

Surely Moses, with all his greatness, would have been the ideal person to sanctify such a place.

Yet God ch-se Joshua instead.

מַדוּעַ?

Two Different Forms of Leadership

The answer lies in the different nature of their leadership.

Moses’ leadership was characterized primarily by open miracles.

Under his leadership, water flowed from a rock. Bread descended from heaven as manna. The Jewish people lived surrounded by extraordinary divine intervention. Moses revealed G-d’s greatness in a direct and overwhelming manner.

Joshua’s leadership, however, was different.

Although miracles certainly accompanied him—for example, the miraculous conquest of Jericho and other supernatural events throughout his lifetime—his leadership was fundamentally more natural.

Joshua’s task was not to keep the people in the wilderness. His mission was to lead them into ordinary life.

He had to conquer the land, settle it, organize the nation, and transform an impure land into the Holy Land.

This required a different kind of leader.

A Leader Who Understood Every Individual

The Torah describes Joshua as “a man in whom there is spirit.”

The Sages explain that this does not merely mean he possessed spirit, for every human being does.

Rather, Joshua understood the spirit of every individual.

He knew how to relate to each person according to that person’s own character, strengths, and needs. He was able to guide every individual in the way that suited him best.

This ability made Joshua uniquely qualified to lead a nation entering ordinary life.

Instead of relying primarily on miraculous intervention, he worked with people as they were, bringing G-d’s presence into everyday reality.

The Moon Reflects the Sun

G-d’s response to Moses teaches a profound lesson about leadership.

Moses may have thought leadership should continue through his own family. But G-d showed him that true continuity does not necessarily come through biological inheritance.

Instead, Moses’ leadership would continue through the one who had completely absorbed his teachings and could express them in the form required for the next generation.

Joshua reflected Moses’ greatness just as the moon reflects the light of the sun.

Yet the moon shines differently.

Its light is softer, adapted to the darkness of the night. It is the same light, but expressed in a form suited to a different reality.

Joshua did not replace Moses by becoming another Moses.

He continued Moses’ mission by expressing it differently.

Transforming the World

This distinction explains why Joshua succeeded where Moses could not.

Moses revealed holiness from above.

Joshua brought that holiness into the world below.

To transform an impure land into the Land of Israel required more than spectacular miracles. It required leadership that could engage with ordinary life, understand ordinary people, and reveal G-d’s presence within the natural world itself.

That was Joshua’s unique mission.

His leadership carried the glory of Moses, yet translated it into practical reality.

Ultimately, this is the purpose of Jewish leadership: not merely to inspire the Jewish people, but to elevate the entire world.

The prophets envision a future in which all nations will recognize G-d and willingly come to Jerusalem to serve Him. Joshua’s leadership already pointed toward that future by demonstrating how divine light can enter everyday life and gradually transform the world.

מַסְקָנָה

The appointment of Joshua was far more than a simple change of leadership.

It represented a new stage in G-d’s plan.

Moses embodied the leadership of the sun—brilliant, powerful, and filled with open miracles.

Joshua embodied the leadership of the moon—receiving the same divine light but reflecting it in a way that could illuminate ordinary human life.

Only this kind of leadership could transform the Land of Canaan into the Land of Israel.

And only this kind of leadership can ultimately transform an imperfect world into a dwelling place for G-d.

Good Shabbos.

Parashat PinchasThis week’s Torah reading relates the story of the passing of the leadership from Moshe to Iehoshua.
