The Torah rises above the distinct identities of Reuven, Yehudah, Levi, Yosef, Binyamin, and the remaining tribes, and Moshe turns toward ישראל as a collective whole. The separate branches are gathered once again into a single tree, and the final words of blessing no longer speak to one portion of the nation but to the unified people standing beneath the protection of their Creator. It is here, at the very conclusion of the Torah’s final blessings, that Moshe declares:

אֵין כָּאֵל יְשֻׁרוּן רֹכֵב שָׁמַיִם בְּעֶזְרֶךָ וּבְגַאֲוָתוֹ שְׁחָקִים׃

“There is none like G-d, O Jeshurun; He rides the heavens to your assistance, and the skies in His majesty.”
(Devarim 33:26)

The words with which this final collective blessing begins are:

אֵין כָּאֵל יְשֻׁרוּן

“There is none like G-d, O Jeshurun.”

Their numerical value is 678.

And hidden within that same number is another word:

תברכנו = 678

“You shall bless us.”

The correspondence is on the mark! At the precise moment when Moshe moves from blessing the individual tribes to speaking about Israel as one collective people, the introductory words themselves conceal the language of blessing. Yet the deeper significance of this connection emerges only when we remember that Israel was never intended merely to receive blessing. From the very beginning of the covenant with Avraham, blessing was given a direction: it would descend from Hashem to Avraham and his descendants, but from there it would continue outward toward humanity.

Hashem told Avraham:

“I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and through you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
(Bereishit 12:3)

Suddenly, 678 begins to speak in two directions. Israel stands beneath the blessing of Hashem—תברכנו, “You shall bless us”—yet that blessing was never designed to stop where it descended. Before the Torah tells Israel how fortunate Israel is, it first tells us how incomparable Hashem is:

אֵין כָּאֵל יְשֻׁרוּן — “There is none like G-d, O Jeshurun.”

Only three verses later, the blessing concludes:

‘אַשְׁרֶיךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל מִי כָמוֹךָ עַם נוֹשַׁע בַּד

“Fortunate are you, Israel; who is like you, a people saved by Hashem?”
(Devarim 33:29)

At the beginning: Who is like Hashem? There is none.

At the end: Who is like Israel?

Yet the Torah itself explains why: עַם נוֹשַׁע בַּיהֹוָה—Israel is a people whose salvation comes from Hashem. Its uniqueness is not independent greatness; it is greatness born from attachment to the One who alone is truly incomparable. The blessing begins above, with the greatness of Hashem, and only then descends below to reveal the greatness of a people sustained by Him.

But the hidden architecture deepens when we extend the opening phrase by just two words:

אֵין כָּאֵל יְשֻׁרוּן רֹכֵב שָׁמַיִם

“There is none like G-d, O Jeshurun; He rides the heavens.”

These words equal 1290.

Far away in Tehillim, another phrase carries precisely the same numerical value:

שִׁבְתִּי בְּבֵית ד’ כָּל יְמֵי חַיַּי

“That I may dwell in the House of Hashem all the days of my life.”
(Tehillim 27:4)

Again: 1290.

At first, these two phrases seem to describe opposite worlds. In Devarim, Hashem is above: רֹכֵב שָׁמַיִם, “riding the heavens.” In Tehillim, David longs to dwell below: בְּבֵית יְהֹוָה, “in the House of Hashem.” One verse lifts our eyes toward the limitless heavens; the other draws the soul inward toward the intimacy of the Divine House.

Yet numerically they are one. Perhaps this is precisely the secret.

The G-d who rides the heavens is not distant from those who seek Him. His transcendence does not remove Him from Creation; it allows Him to encompass it. Indeed, the Torah does not merely say that He rides the heavens. It says:

“He rides the heavens to your assistance.”

The Infinite bends toward the finite. The One exalted above the heavens directs His majesty toward עֶזְרֶךָ—your help. The greatness of Hashem is therefore not presented as a reason for Israel to feel abandoned beneath an unreachable G-d, but precisely the opposite: the One whose power extends beyond the heavens is the One able to come to the aid of those who depend upon Him.

And immediately the Torah moves from heaven to something even more intimate:

מְעֹנָה אֱלֹקי קֶדֶם וּמִתַּחַת זְרֹעֹת עוֹלָם

“The eternal G-d is a dwelling place, and beneath are the everlasting arms.”
(Devarim 33:27)

The language changes from heaven to dwelling.

A מְעֹנָה— refuge, a habitation, a place in which one may dwell securely.

And suddenly the numerical connection to Tehillim 27 becomes even more beautiful. David says: שִׁבְתִּי בְּבֵית יְהֹוָה — “That I may dwell in the House of Hashem.”

Moshe says: מְעֹנָה אֱלֹהֵי קֶדֶם — “The eternal G-d is a dwelling place.”

David longs to dwell with Hashem, while Moshe reveals that Hashem Himself becomes the dwelling and refuge of Israel. Man seeks a home in the Presence of G-d, and G-d surrounds man with His Presence as a home.

There is a beautiful reciprocity concealed here. We desire to dwell with Him, yet He is already the One in whom we dwell. We seek shelter beneath His roof, while the Torah reveals that beneath us are already זְרֹעֹת עוֹלָם, the everlasting arms.

The numerical equality of 1290 therefore seems to join two movements that meet one another: Hashem comes from above בְּעֶזְרֶךָ, to your assistance, while the human soul rises from below with the longing שִׁבְתִּי בְּבֵית יְהֹוָה, to dwell in His House all the days of its life.

And hidden inside the word שבתי is yet another beautiful remez.

According to the straightforward meaning of the verse, שִׁבְתִּי means “my dwelling” or “that I may dwell,” from the root ישב. Yet when its consonants are viewed without the vowel points, the same letters שבתי can also be heard as שַׁבְתִּי—“I returned,” from the root שוב.

The peshat remains David’s longing to dwell in the House of Hashem, but the remez allows us to hear another whisper beneath the words:

שבתי בבית יהוה כל ימי חיי

“I have returned… so that I may dwell in the House of Hashem all the days of my life.”

Before שבתי can become dwelling, it can first become return.

That is the secret of teshuvah. To return to Hashem is not merely to turn away from wrongdoing; it is to return home. The soul was never created to wander endlessly outside its Source. Teshuvah restores direction, bringing a person back toward the One in whom true security was always found.

And now the two numerical mysteries begin to merge.

678 reveals blessing.

1290 reveals dwelling.

The blessing descends from the One who rides the heavens, but its ultimate purpose is not merely that life should become easier, wealthier, or more comfortable. The deepest blessing is closeness itself—the restoration of a world in which man recognizes his Creator, returns to Him, and discovers that beneath all the instability of human history have always been the everlasting arms.

This is why the final blessing of Israel is filled not only with victory but with security:

וַיִּשְׁכֹּן יִשְׂרָאֵל בֶּטַח

“And Israel shall dwell securely.”
(Devarim 33:28)

Once again, the language is dwelling.

The One who rides the heavens becomes a מְעֹנָה, a refuge; Israel dwells securely; and David longs for שִׁבְתִּי בְּבֵית יְהֹוָה, to dwell within the House of Hashem. The entire passage is therefore moving toward the same destination. Divine assistance is not an end unto itself. Protection, blessing, salvation, and victory prepare the conditions in which the relationship between the Creator and His people can once again become a settled dwelling.

And precisely here the universal promise to Avraham returns with renewed force.

If the blessing of Israel exists so that וְנִבְרְכוּ בְךָ כֹּל מִשְׁפְּחֹת הָאֲדָמָה, then the ultimate purpose cannot be Israel dwelling securely while the remainder of humanity remains forever outside the knowledge of Hashem. The prophetic destiny of that blessing is a world increasingly conscious of its Creator—a world in which the nations abandon false gods, justice becomes rooted in Divine morality, and the families of the earth recognize the One from whom all blessing flows.

For the Noahide, this makes Moshe’s final blessing intensely personal without erasing the unique covenantal role of Israel. A Noahide does not need to become Israel in order to participate in the blessing promised through Avraham. The Torah itself speaks of the families of the earth receiving blessing through him. To bless rather than curse, to recognize the G-d of Avraham, to uphold the moral order He gave humanity, to support justice, to seek peace, and to return continually toward the Creator are themselves ways of aligning one’s life with that ancient current of blessing.

And perhaps the two hidden numbers provide a simple spiritual map for that journey.

We first learn to recognize where blessing comes from: אֵין כָּאֵל יְשֻׁרוּן—there is none like Hashem.

Then we learn what blessing is ultimately for: שִׁבְתִּי בְּבֵית יְהֹוָה כָּל יְמֵי חַיַּי—to return toward Him and make our lives places in which His Presence can be acknowledged.

The greatest blessing is therefore not merely what Hashem places into our hands.

It is the realization that our lives themselves can become places in which He is welcomed.

The Torah’s final blessing begins with the G-d who rides the heavens and ends with a people saved by Hashem. Between those two points stand blessing, assistance, refuge, security, return, and dwelling, while behind them all remains the ancient promise given to Avraham that the blessing would one day touch all the families of the earth.

Perhaps this is the secret hidden within these final words of Moshe.

Blessing begins in Heaven.

It descends as help.

It surrounds us as everlasting arms.

It calls us to return.

And when the journey is complete, blessing becomes more than something we receive.

Blessing becomes a dwelling.

In the Torah, numbers do not merely count words—they uncover worlds.numbers do not merely count words—they uncover worlds.

WHEN THE NUMBERS SPEAK

Insights into the Hidden Numerical Wisdom of the Torah

By Rabbi Baruch Simcha

The Hidden Numbers Within Moshe’s Final Blessing to Israel At the conclusion of the Torah, blessing descends from the heavens, gathers the many tribes into one people, becomes a place of refuge beneath the everlasting arms of Hashem, and then quietly reminds us that the blessing entrusted to Avraham was always destined to reach every […]

[35

post-25073","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-gematria-for-noahides

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
