Deuteronomio, 17:15-17<\/a>: <\/strong>\u201cTi costituirai un re\u2026 Soltanto, non avr\u00e0 troppi cavalli e non rimander\u00e0 il popolo in Egitto per procurarsi altri cavalli, e Hashem ti ha detto: non aggiungerai pi\u00f9 cavalli al ritorno in questo modo. La Torah ci comanda di nominare un Re. La Torah poi delinea una serie di mitzvot specifiche per il Re: gli \u00e8 proibito acquistare troppi cavalli; gli \u00e8 proibito avere troppe mogli; e gli \u00e8 proibito possedere troppo argento e oro. La Torah fornisce una ragione per le prime due Mitzvot: il divieto di avere troppi cavalli \u00e8 dovuto al fatto che l'Egitto era il principale fornitore di cavalli e se il Re ne avesse acquistati troppi, la gente avrebbe dovuto tornare in Egitto, ed \u00e8 proibito tornare in Egitto. La ragione del divieto di avere troppe mogli \u00e8 che ci\u00f2 allontanerebbe il marito da Dio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuttavia, la Torah non fornisce una ragione per il divieto di possedere troppo argento e oro. Ci sono due opinioni principali tra i commentari sulla ragione di questa mitzvah: il Targum Yonatan, Daat Zekeinim1<\/sup> e Sefer HaChinuch2<\/sup> Tutti spiegano che il motivo \u00e8 che avere denaro in eccesso, oltre ad avere cos\u00ec tanto potere, porter\u00e0 il Re a diventare arrogante e, di conseguenza, ad allontanarsi da Dio. Questo fu effettivamente il caso di Re Salomone, e port\u00f2 alla divisione del Regno. Ci\u00f2 avvenne quando il popolo chiese al suo successore, Recavam, di alleggerire il peso. Egli rifiut\u00f2 e, di conseguenza, il popolo si ribell\u00f2 e nomin\u00f2 un nuovo Re. Rimane la domanda: perch\u00e9 la Torah stessa ha fornito le ragioni per i divieti di avere troppe mogli e troppi soldi, ma non ha fornito una ragione per il divieto di avere troppi soldi? Rabbino Shimshon Raphael Hirsch5<\/sup> spiega che l'amore per il denaro \u00e8 peggiore di qualsiasi altro desiderio.6<\/sup> Inoltre, non ci si pu\u00f2 mai accontentare del denaro e se ne vorr\u00e0 sempre di pi\u00f9, come dice lo stesso re Salomone in Ecclesiaste,<\/a>7<\/a><\/sup> \u201c"Chi ama il denaro non ne sar\u00e0 mai soddisfatto". Di conseguenza, la Torah afferma che avere troppi soldi \u00e8 di per s\u00e9 altamente problematico, anche senza altre conseguenze. Al contrario, avere troppi cavalli o mogli non \u00e8 necessariamente negativo intrinsecamente, ma solo a causa dei danni che possono derivare da un eccesso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sorge la domanda se il divieto di possedere troppo argento e oro sia limitato al Re. Considerando che ci\u00f2 indurrebbe il Re a tassare eccessivamente il popolo, chiaramente non si applica agli altri. Tuttavia, considerando che ci\u00f2 porterebbe una persona a diventare eccessivamente arrogante, allora forse si applica a tutti. Si potrebbe sostenere che si applichi solo a un Re perch\u00e9 \u00e8 gi\u00e0 in una posizione di grande potere e onore, e quindi \u00e8 pi\u00f9 incline all'arroganza, mentre una persona comune \u00e8 meno a rischio. Tuttavia, Rabbi Meyuchas8<\/sup> scrive che la ragione vale anche per una persona comune e cita a sostegno il versetto dell'Ecclesiaste: "La ricchezza custodita \u00e8 cattiva per il suo proprietario".9<\/sup> Di conseguenza, egli sostiene che si dovrebbe accumulare solo la quantit\u00e0 di denaro necessaria per vivere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
