In The Divine Code<\/em> by Rabbi Moshe Weiner, the fifth and sixth fundamentals of the faith are:

5. Not to prophesy falsely in the name of G-d.
6. Not to prophesy in the name of an idol, or to convince others to worship an idol or to transgress any of the seven Commandments.1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Types of False Prophets<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The phenomenon of false prophecy is timeless and applies to both Jews and non-Jews. False prophets can be categorized into different types based on their sources of inspiration and the messages they convey. Some claim to speak in the name of G-d, attempting to mislead the faithful by distorting divine intentions or providing false prophecies. Others may invoke the names of idols and promote teachings that are in conflict with the Torah. Understanding the distinctions among these false prophets is essential for discerning authentic spiritual guidance from deception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognizing a False Prophet<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Tanakh provides us with clear guidance on how to identify a false prophet speaking in the name of G-d. This is particularly evident in Deuteronomy 18:21-22 <\/a>\u00a0which states:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

21<\/strong>\u00a0And if thou say in thy heart: ‘How shall we know the word which the L-RD hath not spoken?’<\/td>\u05db\u05d0<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u05d5\u05b0\u05db\u05b4\u05d9 \u05ea\u05b9\u05d0\u05de\u05b7\u05e8, \u05d1\u05b4\u05bc\u05dc\u05b0\u05d1\u05b8\u05d1\u05b6\u05da\u05b8:\u00a0 \u05d0\u05b5\u05d9\u05db\u05b8\u05d4 \u05e0\u05b5\u05d3\u05b7\u05e2 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05d4\u05b7\u05d3\u05b8\u05bc\u05d1\u05b8\u05e8, \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05e8 \u05dc\u05b9\u05d0-\u05d3\u05b4\u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05e8\u05d5\u05b9 \u05d3’<\/td><\/tr>

From this passage, one might conclude that if a prophet speaks in the name of G-d and their prediction does not come true, then they are a false prophet. However, it is essential to note that this guideline applies only to positive prophecies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Validity of Prophecies<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n


Rabbi Moshe Weiner writes in The Divine Code<\/em>:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAny good that G-d proclaims publicly (through a true prophet) will not be nullified, even if it is conditional, and this is a valid test for a false prophet.\u201d2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This principle, however, does not apply to judgments or punishments that a true prophet delivers on behalf of G-d. A prominent example is the prophet Jonah, who was sent to deliver a message to the people of Nineveh, as we read in Jonah 3:4<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4<\/strong>\u00a0And Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he proclaimed, and said: ‘Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.’<\/td>\u05d3<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b8\u05bc\u05d7\u05b6\u05dc \u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05e0\u05b8\u05d4 \u05dc\u05b8\u05d1\u05d5\u05b9\u05d0 \u05d1\u05b8\u05e2\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8, \u05de\u05b7\u05d4\u05b2\u05dc\u05b7\u05da\u05b0 \u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05dd \u05d0\u05b6\u05d7\u05b8\u05d3; \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05bc\u05e7\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0, \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b9\u05bc\u05d0\u05de\u05b7\u05e8, \u05e2\u05d5\u05b9\u05d3 \u05d0\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05d1\u05b8\u05bc\u05e2\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05d9\u05d5\u05b9\u05dd, \u05d5\u05b0\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9\u05e0\u05b0\u05d5\u05b5\u05d4 \u05e0\u05b6\u05d4\u05b0\u05e4\u05b8\u05bc\u05db\u05b6\u05ea.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

In verse 10, we see that G-d did not destroy Nineveh:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10<\/strong>\u00a0And G-d saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and G-d repented of the evil, which He said He would do unto them; and He did it not.<\/td>\u05d9<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b7\u05bc\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0 \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05e7\u05d9\u05dd \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05de\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05e9\u05b5\u05c2\u05d9\u05d4\u05b6\u05dd, \u05db\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9-\u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05d1\u05d5\u05bc \u05de\u05b4\u05d3\u05b7\u05bc\u05e8\u05b0\u05db\u05b8\u05bc\u05dd \u05d4\u05b8\u05e8\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05d4; \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05bc\u05e0\u05b8\u05bc\u05d7\u05b6\u05dd \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05e7\u05d9\u05dd, \u05e2\u05b7\u05dc-\u05d4\u05b8\u05e8\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05e8-\u05d3\u05b4\u05bc\u05d1\u05b6\u05bc\u05e8 \u05dc\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05e9\u05c2\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea-\u05dc\u05b8\u05d4\u05b6\u05dd–\u05d5\u05b0\u05dc\u05b9\u05d0 \u05e2\u05b8\u05e9\u05b8\u05c2\u05d4.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Why did this happen? After all, Jonah was a true prophet. We know this from his father\u2019s name, “Yonah ben Amittai”\u2014with Amittai, meaning “truth.” When a prophet is mentioned with his father\u2019s name, it generally indicates that the father was also a prophet. Furthermore, G-d is the ultimate truth.\u00a0 Rabbi Moshe Alshich3<\/a><\/sup> explains that when the people of Nineveh heard G-d’s judgment, they immediately believed in Elokim and His words of judgment. They recognized G-d from the judgments He had proclaimed over Egypt and Sodom and Gomorrah, and they repented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When individuals or groups demonstrate genuine repentance, G-d forgives them, as illustrated in\u00a0 Exodus 34:6-7<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2026The L-RD, the L-RD, G-d, merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth; keeping mercy unto the thousandth generation, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin;\u00a0\u2026<\/td>\u05d3’ \u05d3’, \u05d0\u05b5\u05dc \u05e8\u05b7\u05d7\u05d5\u05bc\u05dd \u05d5\u05b0\u05d7\u05b7\u05e0\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc\u05df–\u05d0\u05b6\u05e8\u05b6\u05da\u05b0 \u05d0\u05b7\u05e4\u05b7\u05bc\u05d9\u05b4\u05dd, \u05d5\u05b0\u05e8\u05b7\u05d1-\u05d7\u05b6\u05e1\u05b6\u05d3 \u05d5\u05b6\u05d0\u05b1\u05de\u05b6\u05ea. \u05d6<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u05e0\u05b9\u05e6\u05b5\u05e8 \u05d7\u05b6\u05e1\u05b6\u05d3 \u05dc\u05b8\u05d0\u05b2\u05dc\u05b8\u05e4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd, \u05e0\u05b9\u05e9\u05b5\u05c2\u05d0 \u05e2\u05b8\u05d5\u05ba\u05df \u05d5\u05b8\u05e4\u05b6\u05e9\u05b7\u05c1\u05e2 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d7\u05b7\u05d8\u05b8\u05bc\u05d0\u05b8\u05d4\u2026<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The Role of G-ds Mercy and the Unchangeability of the Torah<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n


Rambam asserts in Misneh Torah, Foundations of the Torah 10:4<\/a> that when such a prophecy\u2014like that of Jonah\u2014does not come to fruition, it does not undermine the prophecy’s validity. G-d can, in His grace, annul or postpone a judgment.4<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If a prophet arises, whether in the name of G-d or an idol, and teaches that any of the laws of the Torah\u2014either one of the 613 commandments for Jews or any of the 7 Noachide laws and their details\u2014are nullified, or if he attempts to add a law, he is a false prophet. The Torah remains unchangeable after being given at Sinai, as we read in Mishneh Torah<\/em>, Hilchot Yesodei HaTorah (9:1):\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is clear and explicit in the Torah that it is [G-d’s] commandment, remaining forever without change, addition, or diminishment, as [Deuteronomy 13:1<\/a>] states:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1<\/strong>\u00a0All this word which I command you, that shall ye observe to do; thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.<\/td>\u05d0<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u05d0\u05b5\u05ea \u05db\u05b8\u05bc\u05dc-\u05d4\u05b7\u05d3\u05b8\u05bc\u05d1\u05b8\u05e8, \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05e8 \u05d0\u05b8\u05e0\u05b9\u05db\u05b4\u05d9 \u05de\u05b0\u05e6\u05b7\u05d5\u05b6\u05bc\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea\u05b0\u05db\u05b6\u05dd–\u05d0\u05b9\u05ea\u05d5\u05b9 \u05ea\u05b4\u05e9\u05b0\u05c1\u05de\u05b0\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc, \u05dc\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05e9\u05c2\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea:\u00a0 \u05dc\u05b9\u05d0-\u05ea\u05b9\u05e1\u05b5\u05e3 \u05e2\u05b8\u05dc\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5, \u05d5\u05b0\u05dc\u05b9\u05d0 \u05ea\u05b4\u05d2\u05b0\u05e8\u05b7\u05e2 \u05de\u05b4\u05de\u05b6\u05bc\u05e0\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

“All these matters which I command to you, you shall be careful to perform. \u2026 This teaches that we are commanded to fulfill all the Torah’s directives forever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

False Prophets<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It is relatively straightforward to identify a false prophet who speaks in the name of an idol and whose prophecy does not come true. However, the situation becomes more complex when such a prophecy does come to pass. What if the prophet urges us to follow their idol or instructs us to alter the Torah, especially since their prophecy has indeed materialized?<\/p>\n\n\n\n


In Deuteronomium 13:2-4<\/a> we read:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2<\/strong>\u00a0If there arise in the midst of thee a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams–and he give thee a sign or a wonder,<\/td>\u05d1<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u05db\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9-\u05d9\u05b8\u05e7\u05d5\u05bc\u05dd \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05e7\u05b4\u05e8\u05b0\u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05da\u05b8 \u05e0\u05b8\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05d0, \u05d0\u05d5\u05b9 \u05d7\u05b9\u05dc\u05b5\u05dd \u05d7\u05b2\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9\u05dd; \u05d5\u05b0\u05e0\u05b8\u05ea\u05b7\u05df \u05d0\u05b5\u05dc\u05b6\u05d9\u05da\u05b8 \u05d0\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea, \u05d0\u05d5\u05b9 \u05de\u05d5\u05b9\u05e4\u05b5\u05ea.<\/td><\/tr>

In His wisdom, G-d may use a false prophet to test us, strengthening our faith and trust in Him, as we see in the continuation of verse 4:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prophetic Revelation our days<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Today, anyone claiming to be a prophet is a false prophet, because The Sages taught (<\/strong>Sanhedrin 11a:7<\/strong><\/a>): After the last of the prophets, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi, died, the Divine Spirit<\/strong> of prophetic revelation departed<\/em><\/strong> from the Jewish people. But nevertheless, they were<\/strong> still utilizing a Divine Voice,<\/strong> which they heard as a kind of echo of prophecy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the future, prophecy will be restored with the coming of the Messiah, as we can read in Joel 3:1-2<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
