Here, we share some key ideas and practical lessons on how we can use our speech in daily life to build rather than break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Grasshoppers and giants \u2013 the courage to stand alone<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What do you do when the whole world is saying one thing\u2014and deep inside, you know it&#8217;s wrong?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Book of Numbers, twelve leaders\u2014respected, wise, and chosen by name\u2014are sent to spy out the Promised Land. Ten return filled with dread:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe saw giants there\u2026 and we were like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and so we were in theirs.\u201d<br>\u2014 <em>Numbers 13:33<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But two of the spies\u2014<strong>Caleb and Joshua<\/strong>\u2014see the same terrain and return with courage:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe land is very, very good. If Hashem desires us, He will bring us there.\u201d<br>\u2014 <em>Numbers 14:7\u20138<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Same facts. Same land. But a completely different spirit.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Power of Standing Alone<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s the key: <strong>Caleb and Joshua stood alone.<\/strong><br>They were the minority voice of truth in an age of fear. They were vessels of faith, not followers of fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So why is it so hard to take a different stance?<br>Why is it so difficult to say something different from what everyone else is saying?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the world is not neutral. It&#8217;s built with <strong>feedback loops<\/strong>\u2014especially today, both online and offline. We&#8217;re constantly being <strong>evaluated, rated, judged.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Social media rewards <strong>conformity.<\/strong><br>Likes, shares, and algorithmic amplification push the popular and punish the dissenting. The dopamine hit of approval wires us to <strong>self-censor.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why it often feels safer to say things like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m spiritual, but not religious.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a shield against ridicule in societies that often mock organized religion as controlling or outdated.<br>But it also avoids <strong>commitment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fidelity Over Defiance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch, commenting on <em>Numbers 14:24<\/em>, writes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn every generation, the cause of truth has rested on the shoulders of a faithful few. What made them stand apart was not defiance\u2014but <strong>fidelity<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, <strong>Caleb and Joshua\u2019s greatness wasn\u2019t just that they opposed the others.<\/strong><br>It was that they stood firm\u2014with clarity, conviction, and quiet courage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They were not reactive. They were <strong>rooted<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Legacy of Loneliness<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Who else stood like that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Abramo<\/strong>, called <em>Avraham HaIvri<\/em>\u2014&#8221;the one who stood on the other side.&#8221; While the world clung to idolatry, he stood alone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Noah<\/strong>, who built an ark for 120 years amid mockery from his generation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Jeremiah<\/strong>, the prophet who wept alone for truths no one wanted to hear.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, <strong>Noahides<\/strong> walk that same path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They leave behind belief systems they were raised in.<br>Sometimes they lose friends, face ridicule, or get rejected.<br>And yet, they quietly align their lives with <strong>Divine truth<\/strong>\u2014with <strong>Torah<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>You Are the Majority<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Baal Shem Tov is reported to have said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA soul comes into this world for seventy or eighty years just to do one favor for another\u2014physically or spiritually.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also taught:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven if the whole world says the opposite\u2014if what you hold is truth from God\u2014<strong>you are the majority.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not about being contrarian. It\u2019s about having <strong>chiarezza<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why the Spies Failed<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The spies didn\u2019t exactly lie. They described what they saw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So why does the Torah say they brought back an <strong>evil report<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because it wasn\u2019t just slander\u2014it was <strong>emotional sabotage<\/strong>.<br>They said things like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not able to do this.\u201d<br>\u201cThis is a land that devours its inhabitants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Essi <strong>planted despair.<\/strong><br>And as Rav Mendel of Kotzk observed, the rot began with their <strong>self-perception<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were like grasshoppers in our own eyes\u2014and so we were in theirs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Notice: It didn\u2019t start with <em>\u201cthey saw us as grasshoppers.\u201d<\/em><br>It started with <em>how they saw themselves.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you believe you are small, you will project smallness\u2014and others will respond in kind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t be a grasshopper.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Power of Speech<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When we speak negatively\u2014<strong>even to be &#8220;realistic&#8221;<\/strong>\u2014we train the mind to expect failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speech doesn\u2019t just describe reality\u2014it <strong>shapes<\/strong> Esso.<br>If you constantly speak about what\u2019s broken, you\u2019ll feel broken.<br>If you speak about what\u2019s meaningful, your life will feel meaningful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why the Torah is so careful with <strong>speech.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the absence of the <em>Beit HaMikdash<\/em> (Temple), our words\u2014our <strong>prayers<\/strong>\u2014are our offerings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"Offriremo il toro delle nostre labbra\".<br>\u2014 <em>Osea 14:3<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Modern-Day Calebs and Joshuas<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Modern examples of this courage exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>George from the Philippines<\/strong> teaches Torah across Asia. Once a seminary student, he left behind his planned career to follow Hashem.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ruth from Oklahoma<\/strong> started a Noahide support network for prisoners. She\u2019s never even met another Noahide in person.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Yusuf from Turkey<\/strong> writes Torah-inspired stories disguised as cultural essays, quietly circulated through academic networks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Then there are cautionary tales\u2014like the wellness influencer who mixed Torah with tarot cards. She gained followers but lost <strong>coherence<\/strong>. Without <strong>verit\u00e0<\/strong>, her platform eventually collapsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lesson: it has to be <strong>real<\/strong>. It has to be <strong>VERO<\/strong>. It has to be <strong>consistent.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tzitzit and the Power of Memory<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This parashah ends with a mitzvah that does <strong>not apply<\/strong> to Noahides\u2014the mitzvah of <strong>tzitzit<\/strong> (fringes):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou shall look at them and remember\u2026 and not follow after your heart or your eyes.\u201d<br>\u2014 <em>Numbers 15:39<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, the <strong>moral idea<\/strong> applies universally:<br>Rituals <strong>anchor memory<\/strong>, e <strong>memory structures identity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Noahides yearn for sacred rhythm\u2014for structure.<br>And while some Jewish-specific mitzvot are not theirs to perform, the underlying <strong>yearning for connection<\/strong> is real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What can a Noahide do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Set a <strong>daily moment<\/strong> to connect to Hashem.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Speak to God in your own words\u2014like to a friend.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Surround yourself with <strong>symbols<\/strong> that reflect your spiritual identity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learn Torah\u2014not just to gain knowledge, but to <strong>remember who you are.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Final Lesson<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The spies saw <strong>danger<\/strong>.<br>Joshua and Caleb saw <strong>destiny<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One group saw grasshoppers.<br>The other saw <strong>Hashem\u2019s partnership<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rav Kook once wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFear is the loneliness of faithlessness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Noahides today are <strong>not alone<\/strong>.<br>You walk in the spirit of Abraham, of Noah, of Caleb and Joshua.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You are walking toward truth in a world of noise.<br>You are choosing to <strong>serve<\/strong>, rather than be swept away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy servant Caleb had a different spirit in him\u2026 and I will bring him into the land.\u201d<br>\u2014 <em>Numbers 14:24<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>May each of us be granted that different spirit\u2014of memory, courage, and reward.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a id=\"_msocom_2\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Di Rabbi Tani Burton<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sukkatshalom-bneinoach.com\/it\/category\/rabbi-burton\/\">Altri shiurim di Rabbi Tani Burton <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u00a9 Copyright, tutti i diritti riservati.
