Secular historians date this to around 586 BCE, while Jewish tradition places it at 423 BCE. The Jewish people were exiled to Babylon for 70 years until King Cyrus of Persia allowed them to return and rebuild the Temple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet the prophets already warned that the Second Temple era would be troubled. Daniel, in chapter 9, stated that although the Temple would be rebuilt, the period would not be peaceful. Indeed, not long after, the mighty <strong>Greek Empire<\/strong> under Alexander the Great rose to power and conquered much of the known world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alexander himself had a positive relationship with the Jewish people. But after his death, the empire fragmented. The Land of Israel fell to the <strong>Syrian-Greek (Seleucid) Empire<\/strong>, led by Antiochus. Their mission was to spread <strong>Hellenism<\/strong>, a sophisticated but deeply secular Greek ideology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Spiritual Civil War<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hellenistic philosophy swept across the region, influencing many Jews in Israel. These Jews became <em>mit\u2019yavnim<\/em> \u2014 Jewish Hellenists \u2014 who admired Greek culture and rejected Jewish tradition. This created a civil war within the Jewish people: traditional Jews versus Hellenized Jews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As time passed, the Syrian-Greeks began <strong>actively persecuting Judaism<\/strong>. They outlawed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Shabbat observance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teaching Torah<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The New Moon festival<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Circumcision<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Various ritual practices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, the oppression became unbearable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Maccabean Revolt<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A small group of priests \u2014 the <strong>Maccabees<\/strong> \u2014 rose up against the Greek empire and its Jewish collaborators. Though vastly outnumbered and poorly equipped, they fought with tremendous dedication. Over time, they miraculously defeated the Syrian-Greek forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Greeks had desecrated the Holy Temple, sacrificing pigs and attempting to transform it into a pagan shrine. Upon reclaiming the Temple, the Maccabees cleansed and rededicated it \u2014 the very act from which the name <strong>Chanukah<\/strong> (\u201cdedication\u201d) is derived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Miracle of the Oil<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the daily Temple rituals was the lighting of the seven-branched <strong>Menorah<\/strong>. But upon returning, the Maccabees found only <strong>one small jug of pure oil<\/strong> \u2014 enough for a single day. Producing new oil required an eight-day round trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet a miracle occurred:<br><strong>That one day\u2019s supply burned for eight days.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This miracle became the foundation of the Chanukah holiday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today we light a <strong>Chanukiah<\/strong>, a special eight-branched lamp (plus a helper candle), adding one light each night to commemorate the miracle and to fulfill the principle of <strong>pirsumei nissa<\/strong> \u2014 publicizing the miracle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Can Noahides Celebrate Chanukah?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Chanukah is a <strong>rabbinic<\/strong> holiday, not a biblical one, and therefore it is obligatory only for Jews. Noahides are <strong>non richiesto<\/strong> to observe it. However, they <strong>may participate<\/strong> in several meaningful ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2714 Studying the Story and its Spiritual Meaning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The themes of Chanukah \u2014 faith, resilience, spiritual resistance \u2014 are universally inspiring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2714 Reciting Psalms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Psalm 30 (for the dedication of the Temple) is especially relevant. Others include Psalms 33, 67, 91, 133, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2714 Eating Traditional Foods<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Foods fried in oil, such as potato pancakes or doughnuts, commemorate the miracle of the oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2714 Lighting Candles (Without the Blessings)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Noahides may light candles to commemorate the miracle, but they should not recite blessings that speak of being \u201ccommanded,\u201d since the commandment applies only to Jews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2714 Giving Charity or Small Gifts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Giving charity in honor of the holiday is always encouraged for all people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Spiritual Core of Chanukah: Transcendence<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>To understand the deeper meaning of Chanukah, we must notice something intriguing:<br><strong>Chanukah always occurs during the weeks when the Torah portions tell the story of Joseph.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This may not be accidental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Joseph\u2019s Name: A Clue to the Chanukah Message<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Joseph\u2019s name, <em>Giuseppe<\/em>, means <strong>\u201cto increase, to add, to go beyond.\u201d<\/strong><br>His mother Rachel named him saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cMay God add to me another son.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>A remarkable Hasidic insight teaches that the legacy of Jacob (Israel) is encapsulated in this name:<br><strong>the drive to grow, to elevate, to transcend \u2014 never to remain stagnant.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This theme of \u201cgoing beyond\u201d runs through every dimension of Chanukah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Seven Expressions of Transcendence in Chanukah<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. The Few Overcame the Many<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A tiny, untrained group of priests defeated a massive empire \u2014 an act far beyond natural expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. The Oil Burned Longer Than Nature Allowed<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One day\u2019s supply lasted eight days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Increasing Light (Beit Hillel)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Each night we increase the number of lights \u2014 we don\u2019t diminish.<br>This is the essence of <em>Giuseppe<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. The Unique Level of \u201cMehadrin Min HaMehadrin\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Only Chanukah has the supreme level of beautification, \u201cbeautifying the beautiful,\u201d performed by increasing the lights each night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. They Chose Purity Beyond What Was Required<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Maccabees insisted on using pure oil, even though impure oil would have been permitted under the circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. The Number Eight<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Seven symbolizes the natural world.<br>Eight represents what lies <strong>beyond nature<\/strong>, the spiritual and miraculous. Chanukah is eight days for this very reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>7. The Nature of Fire<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Flames always rise. They seem designed to ascend \u2014 a symbol of the soul striving upward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Transcendence for All Humanity<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The message of Chanukah is not just for Jews.<br>The call to <strong>transcend<\/strong>, to grow, to rise above where we are \u2014 applies to every human being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No one should feel content with their current spiritual level.<br>We should always strive to rise, like a flame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>That is the legacy of Joseph.<br>That is the essence of Chanukah.<br>And that is a message for the entire world.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Di Rabbi Michael Skobac<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a9 Copyright, tutti i diritti riservati.
