Yaakov sends emissaries to check on Eisav&#8230; Our sages explain that those emissaries were real angels&#8230; Based on Likutei Sichot, vol. 10, p. 100<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Vayishlach<\/em><\/strong><strong>: Angels, Mission, and Staying Connected Above<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>La porzione della Torah di questa settimana, <strong>Vayishlach<\/strong>, opens with the dramatic moment when <strong>Yaakov (Jacob)<\/strong> sends emissaries to his brother <strong>Esav (Esau)<\/strong> after twenty long years of separation. Their parting, of course, was far from peaceful: Yaakov fled his parents\u2019 home because Esav wanted to kill him. Yaakov then spent two decades in the house of Lavan, where he married four wives and became the father of eleven sons and a daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, after all those years, the brothers are about to meet again. Yaakov sends messengers ahead to assess Esav\u2019s intentions. They return with alarming news: <em>Esav is approaching with 400 armed men<\/em>. Understandably, Yaakov prepares for what could be a violent confrontation\u2014dividing his camp, praying, and sending gifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet the encounter ends not with war, but with a <strong>hug and a kiss<\/strong>. Our sages debate whether that kiss was sincere or whether Esav attempted to bite Yaakov. But whatever happened, the story is rich with meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Angels or Emissaries?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Torah uses a precise and loaded word to describe the messengers Yaakov sent: <strong>\u05de\u05dc\u05d0\u05db\u05d9\u05dd<\/strong><strong> (malachim)<\/strong>. In Hebrew, this word can mean <em>emissaries<\/em>, but it is also the word for <strong>angels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rashi, the classic commentator from 11th-century France, addresses this ambiguity directly. He writes just two words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\"<\/strong><strong>\u05de\u05dc\u05d0\u05db\u05d9\u05dd \u05de\u05de\u05e9<\/strong><strong>\u201d \u2014 \u201cliterally angels.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rashi insists that Yaakov did not send human messengers. He sent actual <em>angels<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Maggid of Mezritch: A Deeper Reading<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Il <strong>Maggid di Mezritch<\/strong>, Rabbi Dov Ber\u2014the successor of the Baal Shem Tov\u2014offered a profound mystical explanation in his final days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He explained that the word <strong>\u201cmamash\u201d<\/strong> (literally) also carries another meaning: <strong>the tangible, physical aspect of something<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this in mind, the Maggid says:<br>Yaakov sent <strong>only the tangible, physical aspect<\/strong> of the angels to Esav,<br><strong>while their spiritual essence remained with Yaakov<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But why would Yaakov divide the angels in this way? After all, in our experience you cannot separate body from soul. When they part, a person dies. And in fact, we acknowledge this miracle every day: after using the restroom we bless G-d \u201cwho formed the human being with wisdom\u2026 and performs wonders.\u201d One explanation is that the \u201cwonder\u201d refers to the miracle of uniting physical and spiritual\u2014two opposites\u2014into one living being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how could Yaakov send just the \u201cbody\u201d of the angels?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Body Below, Spirit Above<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Maggid\u2019s teaching is not about metaphysics\u2014it\u2019s about <strong>our mission<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Human life, like the angels in the story, has two dimensions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>the physical<\/strong>, expressed through action<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>the spiritual<\/strong>, expressed through consciousness and connection to G-d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We were placed in this physical world to make it a home for G-dliness\u2014through the <strong>613 mitzvot<\/strong> for Jews, and the <strong>7 Leggi noahidi<\/strong> for non-Jews and their many details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the only way to fulfill this mission without being swallowed by the world\u2019s influences is to live like those angels:<br><strong>physically present below, but spiritually connected above<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the angels had severed their connection to Yaakov entirely, the Maggid explains, they would have been affected by Esav\u2019s negative spiritual atmosphere. Their protection came from maintaining a link to their source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And so it is with us. Our bodies engage with the world, but our inner identity\u2014our awareness, our priorities, our \u201cheart and mind\u201d\u2014must stay connected to holiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because once a person forgets their spiritual purpose\u2014why they are here\u2014it becomes easy to be swept away by the world\u2019s distractions and pressures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where You Feel You Are, There You Truly Are<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Baal Shem Tov famously said:<br><strong>\u201cA person is found wherever their thoughts are.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your consciousness is attached to G-dliness, that connection shapes and protects you, even as you navigate the physical world and its challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Question for Us<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We understand the mission.
