Buon divertimento!

Some thoughts about Parshat Ki Teitzei:

“You shall not have in your pouch differing weights, a large and a small. You shall not have in your house differing measures, a large and a small. You shall have a full and honest weight; you shall have a full and honest measure.” (Deuteronomy 25:13–15)

The dishonest merchant of the ancient world needed very little technology. He could keep two weights in his pouch: one for buying and another for selling. To the customer, everything appeared legitimate. There was a scale, there was a weight, and there was an agreed price. The deception was hidden in the very instrument that was supposed to guarantee the fairness of the transaction.

Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch points out that the Torah regards measuring, weighing, counting, and calculating as acts of justice entrusted to every individual person. When we calculate what another person owes us—or what we owe another—we are determining what rightfully belongs to each party. The scales of justice are therefore not found only in a courtroom. They appear every day in shops, businesses, contracts, invoices, and ordinary transactions between people.

Rabbi Hirsch further notes that the Torah does not merely prohibit using a dishonest weight. It says, “You shall not have” one in your pouch or your house. The mechanism of deception itself is not supposed to be there. Conversely, the Torah commands us to possess an אבן שלמה וצדק, a complete and just weight. Economic integrity requires more than refraining from outright theft; the systems by which we measure what people give and receive must themselves be fair.

Our weights and measures today rarely consist of stones in a pouch. They may be software, algorithms, checkout systems, invoices, accounting methods, product quantities, subscription terms, ratings, fees, or digital metrics. Yet the moral question remains remarkably similar: When another person relies upon the measure I provide, does my measure tell the truth?

A professional who pads an invoice or bills for hours not actually worked has placed a false weight on the scale. A business that hides unavoidable fees until the end of a transaction may present one price while effectively charging another. A subscription designed to make joining effortless but cancellation deliberately confusing can exploit the difference between what the customer believes is happening and what the system is actually doing. Software that systematically rounds calculations in the operator’s favor may be nothing more than an ancient crooked scale written in code.

The same principle applies to the increasingly complex platforms through which we make decisions. Algorithms can determine prices, rankings, recommendations, probabilities, and what information consumers see. These technologies are not inherently dishonest. But when something is presented as a neutral measurement while its hidden design manipulates the result for the benefit of the person controlling it, the Torah’s ancient question becomes strikingly contemporary: Is the scale itself just?

For Noahides, the detailed laws of weights and measures were given specifically to Israel, but the prohibition against theft is one of the Seven Noahide Laws. These verses therefore offer a powerful insight into what G-d considers economic honesty. Theft is not limited to taking someone’s property by force. Deception can also cause another person to surrender value that he would not knowingly have agreed to give.

There is also a personal challenge here. It is easy to condemn dishonest corporations, manipulative platforms, or deceptive advertising. It is harder to examine our own scales. Is my billing accurate? Is my description of what I am selling truthful? Do I disclose information that materially changes the bargain? Do I calculate what others owe me as carefully as I calculate what I owe them?

Every transaction places a small measure of justice into our hands. The Torah asks us not merely to avoid being caught with a crooked scale, but to make sure that the scales we create and use are honest in the first place. In an age in which the mechanisms of commerce have become increasingly invisible and complex, אבן שלמה וצדק remains a remarkably modern demand: whatever measure another person trusts us to provide, let it be complete, fair, and true.

Ora, riflettete sulle seguenti domande:

Why does the Torah prohibit even possessing a dishonest weight rather than merely prohibiting its use?

Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch describes measuring and calculating as “acts of justice entrusted to every individual person.” How does this change the way you think about ordinary financial transactions?

What are some modern “weights and measures” that people rely upon even though they cannot personally verify how they work?

Is a transaction necessarily honest simply because the customer technically agreed to it?
