Within this framework is the universal responsibility of repentance (Teshuvah)\u2014the responsibility of every human being to turn away from wrongdoing and return to the Creator. Sincere repentance awakens heavenly mercy, bringing a person close to the Creator. In this context, what is the meaning of teshuvah for a Noahide?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Rosh Hashanah, judgment is written for all inhabitants of the world, and on Yom Kippur, that judgment is sealed\u2014for all inhabitants of the world alike. These are universal days of Divine judgment. For the Jewish people, fasting on Yom Kippur and observing its specific laws are explicit commandments from the Torah. A Noahide is not obligated to observe the specific commandments of Yom Kippur that apply to the Jewish people, such as the Torah obligation to fast. At the same time, a Noahide can draw deeply upon the universal spiritual message of these days: repentance, prayer, self-examination, and renewed commitment to serving the Creator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Even though a Noahide is not commanded to fast on Yom Kippur, the Ten Days of Repentance and Yom Kippur itself represent a spiritual opportunity. Their universal elements are teshuvah, prayer, and resolve\u2014available to everyone, every day, and especially emphasized during these Days of Awe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>A Noahide may utilize this opportunity by making firm, positive decisions for the future\u2014strengthening one&#8217;s commitment to the Seven Noahide Laws, increasing acts of charity, honesty, kindness, and character refinement. Turning to the Creator in sincere prayer from the depths of the heart, recognizing that He hears every sincere prayer and forgives those who truly return to Him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Maimonides explains that on Rosh Hashanah, the deeds of every inhabitant of the world are considered, and the world itself is viewed as standing in a delicate balance between merit and guilt. A person&#8217;s good deed can tip that balance toward merit and bring blessing to the entire world.
