Before crossing the border, Abraham makes a surprising request of Sarah: &#8220;Please say that you are my sister, so that it may go well with me because of you, and that I may live because of you&#8221; (Genesis 12:13). This prompt raises a question: How could Abraham rely on Sarah\u2019s merit for his own safety, and was he not putting Sarah herself in a spiritual and physical danger?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Zohar (Lech-Lecha 77b) reveals that Abraham experienced an extraordinary measure of Divine revelation due to Sarah. The Midrash (Bereishit Rabbah 60:16) notes that open miracles occurred inside her tent. Abraham recognized her immense holiness and righteousness and knew Heaven would not permit her to be hurt. Yet, Torah law teaches that one must not rely on miracles alone; one must also create a natural vessel for Divine salvation ( Likkutei Sichos, Vol. 20, p. 38).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abraham understood the dark reality of Egyptian society. While they maintained a facade of legal order, they lacked a fundamental moral anchor. They would refrain from overt adultery with a married woman, but would readily murder a husband to make his wife &#8220;legally available.&#8221; As Abraham later articulated in a similar encounter in Gerar: &#8220;Surely there is no fear of G-d in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife&#8221; (Genesis 20:11). Without the &#8220;Fear of G-d&#8221;\u2014the inner acceptance of Divine will\u2014even an advanced society with courts and legal codes easily devolves into accepting and normalizing murder and corruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To protect them both naturally while waiting for Sarah\u2019s heavenly guardianship to manifest, Abraham stated: &#8220;She is my sister.&#8221; Under the Universal Noahide Code, forbidden relationships are strictly defined ( Maimonides, Laws of Kings 9:5-8). A paternal sister (sharing a father but different mothers) is not classified as a forbidden relation for a Noahide, nor was marriage to a niece. Sarah was actually Abraham&#8217;s niece (Yiskah, daughter of Haran). Thus, Abraham\u2019s statement was legally coherent within the Torah framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Accepting the yoke of Heaven is the true foundation of human morality. Civilized law alone is insufficient if it is not rooted in accountability to the Creator.
