He [Rabbi Yirmiya] would also say: \u201c\u2018open the gates\u2026\u2019 (Isaiah 26:2)\u2014it does not say, \u2018and let the <em>kohanim, levi\u2019im and Yisrael<\/em> enter\u2019, but rather, \u2018and let the righteous nation, the keeper of faith, enter\u2019.\u201d He would also say, \u201c\u2019this is the Gate of Hashem\u2026\u2019(Psalms 118:20)\u2014it does not say, \u2018and let <em>kohanim, levi\u2019im and Yisrael <\/em>enter<em>\u201d<\/em>, but rather, \u2018let the righteous enter through it\u2019\u201d. He would also say, \u201c\u2019sing joyfully\u2026\u2019(Psalms 33:1)\u2014it does not say \u2018<em>kohanim, levi\u2019im and yisrael\u2019<\/em>, but rather, \u2018sing joyfully, O righteous ones, to Hashem\u2019\u201d. Why does the Holy One, Blessed be He love the righteous? Because righteousness is not an inheritance, or a family trait. You find that <em>kohanim<\/em> are priests because of their families, that the <em>levi\u2019im<\/em> are Levites because of their families, as the verse states, \u201cO House of Aharon, bless Hashem! O House of Levi, bless Hashem!\u201d Now, if someone wanted to become a priest, he could not; to become a Levite, he could not. Why? Because his father is not a priest or a Levite. But if he desires to become a <em>tzaddik<\/em> (a righteous person), even a non-Jew can do this, for it is not a family trait. Therefore, the verse states (Psalms 135:20), \u201cO you who fear Hashem, bless Hashem!\u201d It does not say, \u201cthe house of those who fear Hashem, but simply, \u201cthose who fear Hashem\u201d. It is not a family trait. Rather, they chose to love Hashem.
