We find the same expression he uses in the book of Ishaia, but in a reverse order. What does it represent? Based on Likutei Sichot, vol. 2. p. 415<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><br>This week\u2019s Torah reading is <strong>Hazenu<\/strong>, a short but powerful passage. In it, Moshe Rabbeinu (Moses) rebukes the Jewish people just before they enter the Land of Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, the same words Moshe uses appear at the beginning of <strong>Isaiah<\/strong>, but in reverse order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Biblical Texts<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Deuteronomy 32:1 (Hazenu)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak; and let the earth hear the words of my mouth.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Isaiah 1:2<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth, for the L-rd has spoken&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Notice that Moshe in Deuteronomy uses <strong>\u201cgive ear\u201d (listen)<\/strong> for the heavens and <strong>\u201chear\u201d<\/strong> for the earth, while Isaiah reverses this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why the Difference?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The simplest explanation is that both Moshe and Isaiah made the heavens and the earth witnesses to the covenant between G-d and Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u201cListen\u201d<\/strong> implies closeness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u201cHear\u201d<\/strong> implies distance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Moshe, closest to the heavens, says to the heavens: <strong>\u201clisten\u201d<\/strong>, and to the earth: <strong>\u201chear\u201d<\/strong>.<br>Isaiah, closer to the earth, says to the heavens: <strong>\u201chear\u201d<\/strong>, and to the earth: <strong>\u201clisten\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Levels of Prophecy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Prophecy exists on multiple levels. Each prophet receives revelation in a way unique to them. The Hebrew word for prophet, <em>na\u2019vi<\/em>, comes from <em>nasim<\/em>, meaning someone who expresses G-d\u2019s message through words and actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Moshe Rabbeinu<\/strong>: The highest level of prophecy; spoke with absolute authority: <em>\u201cThis is what G-d says.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Isaiah<\/strong>: A great prophet, but on a lower level; spoke with slightly more distance: <em>\u201cThus says G-d.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A key principle: it is impossible to contradict Moshe Rabbeinu\u2019s prophecy. Even the Messiah will never surpass his level of revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Heaven and Earth: Symbols of Our Lives<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Why did Moshe address the earth if he was closest to the heavens? And why did Isaiah address the heavens if he was closest to the earth?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lesson:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Spiritual life<\/strong> (Moshe) must be expressed in daily, material actions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Material actions<\/strong> (Isaiah) need spiritual support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, a person must develop both a spiritual and a material life.
