{"id":23573,"date":"2025-10-24T17:57:42","date_gmt":"2025-10-24T16:57:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sukkatshalom-bneinoach.com\/?p=23573"},"modified":"2025-10-24T17:57:42","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T16:57:42","slug":"sons-of-g-d-and-nephilim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sukkatshalom-bneinoach.com\/ko\/sons-of-g-d-and-nephilim\/","title":{"rendered":"Son(s) of G-d and Nephilim"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><strong>\u05d1\u05e1&#8221;\u05d3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong> A Jewish Perspective on Genesis 6:2<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Mysterious Verse<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\">&#8220;\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b7\u05bc\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05d5\u05bc \u05d1\u05b0\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea\u05be\u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05e0\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u05d3\u05b8\u05dd \u05db\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9 \u05d8\u05b9\u05d1\u05b9\u05ea \u05d4\u05b5\u05e0\u05b8\u05bc\u05d4 \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05bc\u05e7\u05b0\u05d7\u05d5\u05bc \u05dc\u05b8\u05d4\u05b6\u05dd \u05e0\u05b8\u05e9\u05b4\u05c1\u05d9\u05dd \u05de\u05b4\u05db\u05b9\u05bc\u05dc \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05e8 \u05d1\u05b8\u05bc\u05d7\u05b8\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><em>\u201cThe sons of G-d saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they took wives for themselves from whomever they chose.\u201d<\/em> (Genesis 6:2)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This brief but mysterious verse has sparked centuries of interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Who were these <em>\u201cBnei HaElohim\u201d<\/em> \u2014 the <em>sons of G-d<\/em>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jewish tradition preserves <strong>two distinct interpretive paths<\/strong>, each rooted in a different realm of Torah understanding:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pshat<\/strong> \u2013 the straightforward, contextual meaning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Drash<\/strong> \u2013 the Midrashic or allegorical, spiritual reading<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pshat (Simple Meaning): Humans of Power and Authority<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most classical Jewish commentators explain that the <em>Bnei HaElohim<\/em> were <strong>humans \u2014 powerful men, judges, or rulers<\/strong> who misused their status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rashi<\/strong>: \u201cThe sons of the princes and judges (\u05d1\u05e0\u05d9 \u05d4\u05e9\u05e8\u05d9\u05dd \u05d5\u05d4\u05e9\u05d5\u05e4\u05d8\u05d9\u05dd).\u201d These were men of high standing who abused their authority and took women by force.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Radak<\/strong>: Notes that <em>Elohim<\/em> in <em>Exodus 22:27<\/em> refers to judges \u2014 people vested with G-d-like power to judge and lead.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rabbeinu Bahya<\/strong> &amp; <strong>Tur HaArokh<\/strong>: Stress that these leaders were meant to uphold justice but instead fostered violence and moral decline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Moral Message (Pshat):<\/strong><br>Those who wield influence must do so responsibly.<br>When leaders abandon justice, society collapses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Linguistic Note:<\/strong><br>The Torah begins with <em>\u201cBereshit bara Elohim\u201d<\/em> \u2014 \u201cG-d created.\u201d<br>Here, in <em>\u201cBnei HaElohim\u201d<\/em>, the word <em>Elohim<\/em> does <strong>not<\/strong> refer to Hashem Himself.<br>In <em>Pshat<\/em>, it means <em>figures of authority<\/em> \u2014 powerful humans, not divine beings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Drash (Midrashic \/ Mystical Reading): Angels Who Fell<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A deeper, Midrashic tradition interprets <em>Bnei HaElohim<\/em> as <strong>heavenly beings<\/strong>, angels who descended to earth and failed a moral test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Midrash Niddah <\/strong>\u00a0Identifies them as <em>Shamchazai<\/em> and <em>Aza\u2019el<\/em>, angels who assumed human form, desired mortal women, and sinned.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aggadat Bereishit<\/strong> &amp; <strong>other Midrashim<\/strong> recount how two angels, <em>Uzza<\/em> and <em>Aza\u2019el<\/em>, challenged G-d:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat is man, that You are mindful of him?\u201d (Psalm 8:5)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>G-d allowed them to descend to earth to prove their superiority. But they, too, succumbed to human temptation and corruption. Their fall gave rise to the <em>Nephilim<\/em> \u2014 literally, \u201cthe fallen ones.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Source Note:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u05d4\u05e0\u05e4\u05d9\u05dc\u05d9\u05dd \u2013 \u05e2\u05e0\u05e7\u05d9\u05dd \u05e9\u05d4\u05d9\u05d5 \u05de\u05e6\u05d0\u05e6\u05d0\u05d9 \u05e9\u05de\u05d7\u05d6\u05d0\u05d9 \u05d5\u05e2\u05d6\u05d0\u05dc \u05e9\u05e0\u05e4\u05dc\u05d5 \u05de\u05df \u05d4\u05e9\u05de\u05d9\u05dd \u05d1\u05d9\u05de\u05d9 \u05d0\u05e0\u05d5\u05e9<\/em><br><em>(Rashi on Niddah 61a; Targum Yonatan on Genesis 6:4)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Midrashic tradition adds that these angels descended during the days of <strong>Na\u2019amah<\/strong>, sister of <strong>Tuval-Kayin<\/strong>, and sinned with humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their moral downfall is remembered symbolically in the <strong>Se\u2019ir La\u2019Azazel (scapegoat)<\/strong> of Yom Kippur, which atones for sins of <strong>sexual immorality<\/strong> \u2014 echoing the corruption of those fallen beings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These <em>Nephilim<\/em> were not merely giants in size but in <strong>moral collapse<\/strong> \u2014 once pure and lofty, they became the embodiment of pride and desire without restraint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Moral Message (Drash):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even the exalted can fal<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spiritual greatness without humility leads to destruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jewish vs. Christian Understandings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Jewish tradition, the phrase <em>\u201cBen Elohim\u201d<\/em> \u2014 \u201cson of G-d\u201d \u2014 never denotes literal divinity or biological descent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather, it refers to <strong>a close relationship with G-d or a special mission<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Exodus 4:22<\/em>: \u201cIsrael is My firstborn son.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Hosea 11:1<\/em>: \u201cOut of Egypt I called My son.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Psalms 2<\/em>: The Davidic king is called G-d\u2019s \u201cson\u201d because of covenantal closeness, not divine essence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As <strong>Rabbi Tovia Singer<\/strong> explains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA \u2018son of G-d\u2019 in Tanach is never a divine offspring.
