When Moses approaches Pharaoh and asks, \u201cLet my people go,\u201d Pharaoh responds, \u201cWho is Hashem that I should let the people go?\u201d This encounter sets the stage for the ten plagues, whose ultimate purpose is to reveal G-d\u2019s supreme authority to all of Egypt:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u05d5\u05b0\u05d9\u05b8\u05d3\u05b0\u05e2\u05d5\u05bc \u05de\u05b4\u05e6\u05b0\u05e8\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05dd \u05db\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d4&#8217;\u201d<br>\u201cAnd Egypt shall know that I am the L-rd.\u201d (Shemot 7:5)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Netivot Shalom<\/strong> draws a beautiful connection between Noah\u2019s ark, the ten plagues, and our personal path to spiritual redemption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Noah\u2019s Ark: Three Levels, Three Layers of Liberation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hebrew word for ark, <strong>Teiv\u00e1h (\u05ea\u05b5\u05bc\u05d9\u05d1\u05b8\u05d4)<\/strong>, has multiple layers of meaning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A physical ark or chest, such as Noah\u2019s ark or the basket of Moses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A \u201cword,\u201d composed of letters \u2013 referring to the Teiv\u00e1h of Torah and prayer, a spiritual space for protection and guidance.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Noah\u2019s ark had <strong>three levels<\/strong>, each serving a distinct purpose:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lower level:<\/strong> reserved for waste and the lower aspects of creation \u2192 corresponds to <strong>actions and deeds<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Middle level:<\/strong> reserved for animals and living beings \u2192 corresponds to <strong>emotions and desires<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Upper level:<\/strong> reserved for humans themselves \u2192 corresponds to <strong>thoughts and intellect<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Rashi, Chizkuni, and Kli Yakar emphasize that these levels were intentional, reflecting different layers of reality from the lowest to the highest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Plagues: A Mirror of Our Three Layers and G-d\u2019s Sovereignty<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The ten plagues are more than physical disasters; they provide a profound lesson on <strong>G-d\u2019s mastery over all creation<\/strong> and serve as a blueprint for personal spiritual growth. The plagues correspond to the three levels of Noah\u2019s ark, each paired with a biblical verse emphasizing G-d\u2019s sovereignty:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tachtiyim \u2013 The Lowest Layer<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Plagues:<\/strong> Blood, Frogs, Lice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Verse:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05d6\u05b9\u05d0\u05ea \u05ea\u05b5\u05bc\u05d3\u05b7\u05e2 \u05db\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d4&#8217;\u201d (Shemot 7:17)<br>\u201cWith this you shall know that I am the L-rd.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Focus:<\/strong> Directed at the lowest aspects of creation: water, soil, and the ground.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Spiritual Level:<\/strong> Reflects <strong>our actions and daily conduct<\/strong> \u2013 the physical plane.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Emunah:<\/strong> G-d rules over the physical realm, strengthening our trust that He guides and blesses our deeds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Shniyim \u2013 The Middle Layer<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Plagues:<\/strong> Wild Animals, Pestilence, Boils<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Verse:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b7\u05e2\u05b7\u05df \u05ea\u05b5\u05bc\u05d3\u05b7\u05e2 \u05db\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d4&#8217; \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05e7\u05b6\u05e8\u05b6\u05d1 \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5\u201d (Shemot 8:18)<br>\u201cSo that you shall know that I am the L-rd in the midst of the land.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Focus:<\/strong> Directed at living beings on the earth\u2019s surface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Spiritual Level:<\/strong> Reflects <strong>emotions and desires<\/strong> \u2013 the heart, the middle layer of a person.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Emunah:<\/strong> G-d governs our emotions and desires, helping us align our hearts with His will.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Shlishim \u2013 The Highest Layer<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Plagues:<\/strong> Hail, Locusts, Darkness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Verse:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u05d1\u05b7\u05bc\u05e2\u05b2\u05d1\u05d5\u05bc\u05e8 \u05ea\u05b5\u05bc\u05d3\u05b7\u05e2 \u05db\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9 \u05d0\u05b5\u05d9\u05df \u05db\u05b8\u05bc\u05de\u05b9\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05db\u05b8\u05dc\u05be\u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5\u201d (Shemot 9:14)<br>\u201cSo that you shall know that there is none like Me in the whole earth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Focus:<\/strong> Directed at the atmosphere and the heavens.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Spiritual Level:<\/strong> This verse reflects the highest level of the human soul, which encompasses <strong>thoughts and intellec<\/strong>t \u2013 the <em>mo\u2019ach<\/em>. The <em>mo\u2019ach<\/em> is the physical brain, which channels and expresses the intellectual dimension of the <em>neshama<\/em> (soul), connecting our reasoning and understanding to spiritual insight.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Emunah:<\/strong> G-d reigns over the intellect and the most complex aspects of existence, assuring us that He can guide our thoughts and grant ultimate redemption.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Through these three sets of plagues, we recognize that G-d is sovereign over all levels of existence: physical, emotional, and intellectual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Tenth Plague: G-d Himself Brings the Ultimate Redemption<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The tenth plague, the death of the firstborn, represents a profound shift in the redemption process:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d1\u05b7\u05bc\u05d7\u05b2\u05e6\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d4\u05b7\u05dc\u05b7\u05bc\u05d9\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d4\u05b4\u05db\u05b8\u05bc\u05d4 \u05db\u05b8\u05bc\u05dc\u05be\u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05db\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8 \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05d0\u05b6\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5 \u05de\u05b4\u05e6\u05b0\u05e8\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05dd\u2026\u201d (Shemot 12:29)<br>\u201cAnd it came to pass at midnight that the L-rd struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the prisoner in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of the livestock.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike the previous plagues, this one begins <strong>from the top, the intellect<\/strong>, and works downward through emotions and actions. The message is clear: <strong>ultimate redemption comes only from G-d Himself<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chazal teach that sin arises in three steps: the eyes see, the heart desires, and the body acts (Rashi, Bamidbar 15:39). The eyes operate within the domain of the intellect, connected to the \u201cvessels\u201d of understanding. In the tenth plague, G-d intervenes at the highest level to initiate full redemption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although we can strive to refine our actions, emotions, and thoughts, some aspects remain beyond our control. Complete <strong>geulah<\/strong> (redemption) is brought by G-d, starting with the intellect and sanctifying the emotions and actions through His guidance and power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Teiv\u00e1h: Protection, Guidance, and Spiritual Growth<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as Noah found protection in the ark during the flood, humans can find safety and guidance in their <strong>Teivot \u2013 their words of Torah and prayer<\/strong>. The Teiv\u00e1h provides a spiritual space to restore, purify, and properly shape one\u2019s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <strong>Noahides<\/strong>, this includes studying the <strong>seven Noachide laws<\/strong>, which serve as broad categories of moral and spiritual guidance. From these core laws, many <strong>derived laws and practical applications<\/strong> emerge, which must be implemented in daily life. Through this study, Noahides learn to refine their character and align their actions with G-d\u2019s will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Noahides are not explicitly commanded to pray like Jews, human beings do not need a command to pray, because prayer is the natural and obvious expression of their connection to Hashem. Faith in G-d naturally inspires one to seek His help and guidance. Prayer becomes a tool for personal growth in alignment with His will and for making the world a better place. The Teiv\u00e1h \u2013 a space of study and prayer \u2013 serves as a <strong>personal ark<\/strong>, offering protection, guidance, and gradual spiritual development, just as Noah and his family were protected and guided in the ark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion: Actions, Emotions, and Thoughts<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our spiritual journey mirrors the structure of the ark and the plagues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Actions:<\/strong> purification of our daily conduct.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Emotions:<\/strong> refinement and transformation of desires and feelings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Thoughts:<\/strong> the highest level, governed by God, influencing all that lies below.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The ten plagues illustrate that redemption is a process, and <strong>ultimate liberation comes from G-d Himself<\/strong>.
