The people complain once again\u2014this time about meat. Their longing for Egypt returns, and their words imply regret about the very redemption itself. G-d responds sharply: they will receive meat, not for one day, not for ten, but for an entire month\u2014until it becomes repulsive to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Moses responds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Book of Numbers 11:21\u201322 he raises a simple but piercing question: there are six hundred thousand men\u2014how can there possibly be enough meat for everyone? Even if all the flocks are slaughtered or all the fish gathered, it seems impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question arises: <strong>is Moses doubting G-d here?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Not so quickly\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The classical commentaries show that Moses\u2019 words should not be read as disbelief:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rashi on Numbers 11:21; 11:23<\/strong>: Moses is not expressing doubt in G-d, but describing the people\u2019s nature. Their complaint is not a genuine search for resolution; whatever they receive is turned into renewed dissatisfaction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ibn Ezra on Numbers 11:21<\/strong>: Moses reasons within the limits of nature and does not see how this could be practically possible without an explicit miracle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Chizkuni on Numbers 11:22\u201323<\/strong> and <strong>Sforno on Numbers 11:22<\/strong>: the issue is not food itself, but the inner attitude of the people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together these sources show that Moses\u2019 words are not denial of G-d\u2019s power, but a collision between divine promise and human reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>G-d\u2019s response: a different dimension<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">G-d answers briefly but sharply: <em>\u201cIs the hand of G-d too short?\u201d<\/em> (Book of Numbers 11:23)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, Moses is still thinking in human categories of feasibility and logistics. But G-d\u2019s action is not limited by human calculation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later in the chapter, vast quantities of quail are indeed brought. According to <strong>Chizkuni<\/strong>, this does not involve a break from nature, but rather G-d directing nature itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>So\u2026 did Moses doubt?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the better question is: <strong>what kind of leader is Moses here?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>thinks practically<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>understands the people (perhaps too well)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>asks honest questions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His words are not a lack of faith, but a collision between human logic and divine promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that is precisely what makes him credible: he does not pretend tension does not exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>An uncomfortable mirror<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the real tension is not with Moses, but with the people\u2014and with humanity itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The people had:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>witnessed miracles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>experienced redemption<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>received daily manna<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yet dissatisfaction remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question becomes sharper: <strong>can external provision ever resolve an inner lack?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the answer is no. Sometimes a person must receive exactly what they desire in order to discover that it does not satisfy what they truly seek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A deeper layer: restlessness that is actually longing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a Chassidic interpretation of this passage (Book of Numbers 11:1; Sefer HaSichot 5751, vol. 2, pp. 598\u2013610), the verse <em>\u201cthe people sought a pretext\u201d<\/em> is not read as simple ingratitude, but as something deeper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The complaint is not pure rebellion against G-d, but an inner restlessness: the sense that one\u2019s current relationship with G-d lacks depth. What appears as rebellion is, in truth, a distorted form of longing for greater closeness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The people are not necessarily trying to leave G-d\u2014but to reach Him more deeply than their current experience allows. Because this longing has no clear form, it emerges as complaint and dissatisfaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The mirror for Noahides<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those walking the path of the Seven Noahide Laws, this dynamic is recognizable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those who begin this path often come from lives with more religious structure, ritual, or identity frameworks.
