In dit gedeelte beveelt God Abram zijn geboorteland te verlaten en naar een land te gaan dat Hij hem zal tonen: &quot;Ga weg uit uw land, uw geboorteplaats en het huis van uw vader, naar het land dat Ik u zal tonen&quot; (Genesis 12:1). Abrahams gehoorzaamheid toont geloof en vertrouwen in Gods beloften, zelfs zonder de volledige uitkomst te kennen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Na Abrams grote overwinning op de vier koningen zei Hashem tegen hem: &quot;Wees niet bang, Abram... je beloning zal zeer groot zijn.&quot; Rashi legt uit dat Abram bang was dat hij zijn beloning voor al zijn rechtvaardigheid al had ontvangen. Daarop stelde God hem gerust: &quot;Waar je je zorgen over maakt \u2013 je beloning is zeer groot.&quot; Het is duidelijk dat Abram zijn Schepper puur en uit liefde diende, alleen omwille van de hemel. Hoe kan het dan dat Abram zich zorgen maakte over zijn beloning, tot het punt dat God hem moest geruststellen?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Het antwoord ligt in het feit dat Abram zichzelf beschouwde als stof en as \u2013 hij zag zichzelf niet als een persoonlijk, individueel wezen, maar als een instrument in de hand van God, wiens enige doel het is om Gods naam in de wereld te verkondigen. Dit verklaart waarom Abraham zich zorgen maakte over zijn beloning. Hij wilde een beloning ontvangen zodat anderen zouden zien dat geloof in God de ware weg is. Abrahams zorg betrof niet zichzelf, maar de eer van de hemel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Goddelijke beloning kan op vele manieren tot uiting komen. Het kan materi\u00eble overvloed betekenen, rijkdom, succes in het gezinsleven, of eeuwige geestelijke beloning in de toekomstige wereld. De Schepper schiep de wereld om Zijn scheppingen goed te doen, en de aard van het ultieme goede is om te geven. Er is echter een hoger niveau: God dienen ter wille van de hemel, zonder enige verwachting van persoonlijke beloning. Dit is een hogere fase in het dienen van Hashem, en wanneer men dient zonder enige beloning te verwachten, wordt de beloning voor een dergelijke dienst oneindig veel groter dan wanneer men dient met het oog op beloning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Abraham was niet erg populair in zijn strijd tegen de wijdverbreide afgoderij van zijn tijd. Hij werd bedreigd door de machtigste koning van zijn generatie, Nimrod. Desondanks onderwees en bekeerde hij actief tienduizenden mensen tot het geloof in \u00e9\u00e9n God.<br>Abraham was zeer bedreven in het kennen van God. Hij verwierf een diep inzicht in de oneindige grootheid van de Schepper en het besef dat al het bestaan leeg is zonder Hem. Abraham erkende dat God de enige ware werkelijkheid is. Hij gaf deze kennis door aan tienduizenden van zijn discipelen.
