Jakob ontving zieke en zwakke kuddes van zijn schoonvader Laban, die hem herhaaldelijk probeerde te bedriegen. Hoewel het in hun tijd, en zelfs nu nog, gebruikelijk was om zwakke rassen te verbeteren door ze te kruisen met sterkere dieren van andere soorten, handelde Jakob niet op deze manier. Hij zorgde ervoor dat hij alleen binnen dezelfde soort fokte, en overtrad daarmee het verbod op kruisingen niet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Er bestaat een traditie onder de wijzen dat de Noachieten de wetten moesten naleven die het kruisen van dieren en bomen met Kilayim (hybriden) verboden. Jacobs daden benadrukken zijn strikte naleving van het behoud van de integriteit van elke soort. Het verbod geldt voor het kruisen van verschillende soorten (zoals een wolf met een hond, of een paard met een ezel), maar niet voor het cre\u00ebren van variatie binnen dezelfde soort. Jacob gebruikte een ongebruikelijke techniek om kuddes te fokken die de gewenste kenmerken (ringgestreept, gevlekt en gespikkeld) zouden dragen; op deze manier verkreeg hij ze volgens zijn afspraak met Laban. .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Waarom is het behoud van de soortintegriteit zo cruciaal? Jacob veranderde weliswaar kleurkenmerken, maar cre\u00eberde geen nieuwe hybride. Daarmee eerde hij de natuurlijke orde die de Schepper in de schepping had vastgelegd, wat de voornaamste reden is voor het verbod (Ramban). Verschillende boomsoorten mogen bijvoorbeeld niet met elkaar gekruist worden. Een tak van een appelboom mag bijvoorbeeld niet op een andere boom ge\u00ebnt worden, en omgekeerd. Er is nog een andere reden: het fokken van een dier met een andere soort dan de zijne veroorzaakt veel fysiek lijden en ellende (Sefer HaChinuch). Maimonides legt in zijn boek De Gids voor de Verwarden uit dat het verbod op hybriden bedoeld is om ons te distanti\u00ebren van de praktijk van afgodendienaars, omdat zij twee soorten kruisten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jacob koppelde de kuddes zorgvuldig met de duidelijke bedoeling rijkdom te vergaren op een manier die de schepping niet schaadde en de natuurlijke orde niet verstoorde. Jacobs succes was niet louter het resultaat van een slim plan, maar veeleer het resultaat van goddelijke hulp. Het feit dat Jacob handelde met oog voor de zuiverheid van de diersoorten \u2013 in overeenstemming met de morele essentie van het verbod \u2013 had zijn succes moeten beperken. Integendeel, juist deze zorgvuldigheid vormde de basis voor de grote economische welvaart die de Schepper hem schonk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Het verhaal van Jacob versterkt het idee dat iemands fysieke en economische succes verbonden is aan het naleven van de principes van de schepping, waaronder het behoud van de integriteit van de soort.
