“So shall you bless the Children of Israel, saying (‘amor’) to them.” (Numbers 6:23)
The word ‘amor’ in Hebrew means ‘say’ as in our verse, but it can also mean love. (Interestingly, amore in English/Italian also means love!) We see an example of this in the scriptures from Deuteronomy 26:18 “And God has loved (he’emircha) you today.”
Rav Levi Yitzchak of Berdichev explained that this helps us understand our verse in Numbers 6:23. It teaches that only one who loves the people of Israel is worthy and qualified to bless them and that one who loves will bless others.
