The Oblication of Aknowledging our Creator
Or the Prohibition of worshiping false gods.
Psalm 115 teaches us the following against idols:
Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands.
They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see;
they have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but cannot smell;
they have hands, but cannot touch, feet, but cannot walk; they can make no sound in their throats.
Psalm 19 says:
The heavens declare the glory of God, the sky proclaims His handiwork.
Day to day makes utterance, night to night speaks out.
There is no utterance, there are no words, whose sound goes unheard.
Their voice carries throughout the earth, their words to the end of the world.
Idols do not bring answers to life’s questions. Abram looked at nature and heard their words. He understood from that, that there must be One Only True G-d Who brought about and brings all things into being and Who controls and directs all things. We believe, with simple, childlike faith in G-d, that He is the Creator of everything and at the same time recognize that He is so great that He is beyond our understanding. G-d is Alone, is not corporeal and has a unique identity.
