Exodus 29:37 – Everything that touches the altar is sanctified

Thursday 9 Adar 5783 – 2 Maart 2023

כׇּל־הַנֹּגֵ֥עַ בַּמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ יִקְדָּֽשׁ

Everything that touches the altar is sanctified.

Everything that touches the altar? But not everything can touch the altar. Animals that are not kosher for the altar are not brought to the altar. But if an animal is accidentally brought with an undetected defect, the animal is sanctified.

What can Noahides learn from this?

Man is created in the Image of G-d and precious in the eyes of G-d. When we interact with people who know nothing about G-d or the 7 Noachid commandments, we must bring them to the “altar”, to HaShem. Once they have come into contact with knowledge about HaShem, it will leave an imprint on their soul. That piece of their soul will be holy, and will hopefully one day grow larger and come to full recognition of HaShem. That is the “animal” brought to HaShem, but still with a flaw.

But we do not need to inform all people of the 7 Noachid laws. When it is not safe to bring this message, or because you are sure in advance that people will not accept it, but rather abuse it, it is better not to talk about it. All you can do then is pray to HaShem to create an open heart in this person.
