R’ Elimelech of Lizhensk was widely recognized as one of the holiest people of his time. A young Torah scholar once came to see him and asked, “We are both well-learned in Torah, yet you have gone way beyond me in saintliness. What do you have that I don’t?”
R’ Elimelech went over to a bowl of fruit and said, “When you want to eat an apple, do you first make a blessing over the fruit?”
“Of course I do,” the young rabbi responded.
“Well, that’s the difference. When you want to eat a piece of fruit, you will first recite a blessing. When I want to make a blessing – I will go to eat a piece of fruit.”
