Tu B’Av – The 15 of the Month of Av

The 15th of Av is sometimes jokingly called the Jewish Valentine’s Day.

The Talmud tells us that many years ago the “daughters of Jerusalem went dancing in the vineyards” on the 15th of Av, and “whoever had no wife went there” to find a bride.

However, the 15th of Av also has a deeper meaning. It is the antithesis of the great sorrow of Tisha B’Av. The sorrow for the loss of the Temples and other sad events on this 9th of the month of Av.

On the 9th of the month of Av, the idolatrous peoples exercised great power over the people and poured their evil both over the Temples and over the people.

On the 15th, the power of the sun or and the power of the moon, of Israel increases in greater measure than the evil of the nations.

In the time of Redemption, the nations will come in total nullification – the sun will have lost its luster – and the moon will shine more than the sun.

As Isaiah in 2: 2-3 says :

In the days to come, The Mount of the L-RD’s House Shall stand firm above the mountains And tower above the hills; And all the nations Shall gaze on it with joy. And the many peoples shall go and say: “Come, Let us go up to the Mount of the L-RD, To the House of the G-d of Jacob; That He may instruct us in His ways, And that we may walk in His paths.” For instruction shall come forthfrom Zion, The word of the L-RD from Jerusalem.
